View Full Version : [WIP] Damage Control analyzer that factors crew experience into the damage report
I wish I could edit the poll. What I meant by "1.4" is the pending 1.4 patch of course.
Although this application is similar to H. Gieseke's DA II, I purposely didn't even peek at his code because this was a project I made to familiarize myself with VB .NET. Any similarities, while not coincidental , were unintentional. After all, when two programs are written to do similar things, they're bound to have some similar code! That doesn't mean I don't give him credit, though. It was his program that inspired me to do this in the first place, especially because it seemed that development on that project had been frozen for some time.
Anyway, this application actually factors in the crew experience *by comparment* so that if the forward torpedo room gets damaged and it's the worst damage on the ship, you rely on the experience of the forward torpedo room when the damage estimate comes in. Any "Unmanned" compartments are covered by the damage control team - including the hull, which is almost always worst damaged - so now there's a reason to have experienced crew on the damage control team! Also, this application peeks at the submarine cfg file to get the crush depth and periscope depths, so it can report diving depth in feet instead of percentages.
If you have any questions, you can ask them here or contact me at: billko@worldnet.att.net. Anyone sending me email pertaining to the application will be added to my Damage Control mailing list for update notification.

History:
Version 1.1.0.0
Fixes:
None
Bugs:
Medals shown do not match what is in the game. (SH4 1.3)
Changes:
Special Dedication to LeoVampire/Dave in help file credits
Title changed to "Damage Control - LeoVampire Edition."
Version 1.0.6.1

Fixed DC incompatibility with flotillas.upc. (In other words, added bases should *really* work now!)
Bugs:
Medals shown do not match what is in the game. (SH4 1.3)
Changes:
None
Version 1.0.6.0
Fixes:
Fixed in-game time and date to actually do something. (It reads from the command log, which has the time and date of the last command issued. If there is no command log (i.e., in port, it reverts to the old way of getting the date and time). Since DC reads from legacy files that have little, if anything, to do with gameplay, I totally agree with the Dev's and their decision not to fix this bug, since it has absolutely nothing to do with how the in-game time is kept.
Bugs:
Medals shown do not match what is in the game. (SH4 1.3)
Changes:
None
Version 1.0.5.3
Fixes:
Fixed embarrassing laziness bug where Bases/Flotillas were hard-coded so that added bases/flotillas were being flagged as "Unknown."

Changes:
Hint: Dave, look in the credits, okay?
Version 1.0.5.1
Fixes:
Fixed a problem in the Tambor class (I believe Gar, Salmon and Sargo classes were also affected) where the application was incorrectly assuming that these sub classes had the option of having an aft AA gun, which screwed up how it was reporting AA Gun damage.
Bugs:
In-Game time and date are not updated.
Medals shown do not match what is in the game.
Changes:
I *finally* understand all the silly things that happened to the US Navy's flag officer ranks, Rear Admiral Upper/Lower half, and the Commodores (pun intended). It turns out that for a while, the US Navy HAD no one-star flag officer equivalent. You went straight to Rear Admiral (two stars) from Captain. This was because the previous one-star designation, Commodore, confused everyone, since that was also the title for any Captain that commanded a small fleet of ships. As if they didn't have that problem with Captains being both a rank and a title for any officer that commanded a ship! Anyways, the other branches of the military got hurt feelings when their Brigadier Generals were getting outranked by Navy officers they considered junior to them, so the Navy re-introduced the Commodore rank for a few years, then decided that they would instead split the rank of Rear Admiral Lower and Upper half into distinct ranks (one and two star flag officers, respictively). Previously, it was a designation only of pay grade. Your tax dollars at work!!! Anyway, for a significant part of WWII, the US Navy had no one star Flag Officers, so that will be faithfully represented now.

Thanks for the comments, guys. The next release is going to be pretty soon. it will feature a full-blown help file. it's easy enough to use on its own, but this is a learning experience so I'm treating it as much as a "real" project as possible. Maybe a few days, if I survive the beating I'm taking from my wife for spending so much time on this thing (rightfully so, I might add).
Bill

Rattail:
It's indirect, but if you notice, the crew is recommending you stay on the surface... When damage isn't so critical, they will tell you what they think the sub can handle. And the accuracy depends on how experienced they are. The damage control team is always responsible for assessing hull damage; they will also assess any compartments not manned. (If you have no damage control team, which happens with a quick mission, you'll get a "best guess" +/- 15% of actual dive depth on every unmanned compartment...)

Thanks, this is a great addition to SH4. Simple and to the point, very helpful.
Hmmm, I was awarded the "Submarine Service Medal (Dist. Service Medal) and the output file - and Damage Control also - reports I got the Purple Heart. Actually the output was correct IMHO because I ran into a big carrier task force as I was patrolling the "Jawa" Sea and got the crapola beat out of me because I could not dive deep enough to keep the destroyers off my back - green watch crew didn't report the contact until the task force contacted me - in a most direct manner. I ended up just putting her on the bottom of the sea when they weren't looking and apparently they couldn't tell me from a sea shell because they eventually got tired of wasting depth charges and went back to excorting the task force... No one would give me a Dist. Service Medal for for beating up a boat and not completing my objective. ;)
But the fact remains... the stock medal system sucks. I wonder if one of the medals mods would fix that... although I wonder, because from what I've been reading, they've been having similar probs...

Actually... thankfully there is something you can do about it (and it took me a while to figure this one out when I first started playing). Clicking underneath any of the three gauges gives you an alternate indicator - clicking under the standard depth gauge switches it to one that can go to 500 feet (or something like that).
Enjoy!

Thanks mate!
Damage Control version 1.0.4.0 will be out shortly. It will feature gold stars for duplicate medals (please don't get more than five - I haven't coded for silver stars yet!), plus if you mouse over the stars/ribbons, you get a tooltip showing the date you got them.
Bill
Damage Control v 1.0.4.1 is now out.
What's new:
Duplicate medals are shown as gold stars, up to four duplicates. (Per military custom. I haven't coded for more than four duplicate medal = 1 silver star because it would unnecessarily clutter up the user interface - this is supposed to be about sub damage, remember?)
This can be downloaded from:
http://users.gotsky.com/kaf/damage%20control/
For full history details, see original post.
Enjoy!
Bill
PS: my aoplogies to H. Gieseke for the egregious error I made in the spelling of his name in the credits. It was a very late night...

Damage Control 1.0.4.3 is now available. There are some bug fixes that are too subtle to notice right away in that they don't crash the application, but are nevertheless critcal, as well as code optimization to make it take up less memory and also to interfere less with the game, itself.
As usual, it can be downloaded from:
http://users.gotsky.com/kaf/damage%20control/
The latest history.txt can plus an overview of the application can be found in the original post.
This is a recommended update!

My crew must be a bunch of amateurs.. Despite 3 bulkheads damaged (goodness knows when THAT happened...), and a whole lot more, they report that i can dive to 300ft, so I sit at 50m after having sunk a NTLE. This to allow them time to repair things before I move out. Silent running rigged. 3 destroyers looking for me. (No damage yet). Next thing I start sinking.... nothing I can do.

That is *very* odd. The only thing I can think of is that SH4 isn't correctly reporting compartment damage for something... Do you remember which compartment the crew was reporting as most damaged? All the application does is search for the compartment with the most damage and generate a random percentage error based on the experience of the crew involved in the decision-making process. In any case, the number should never be greater than +/- 20%.

Hi Bilko,
If I look at what's damaged in SH4, there are 3 bulkheads, the engines, and other stuff. But the damage Control Analyzer only shows minor damage to the deck and flak guns. I know that I did not get nailed by anything before this. Maybe SH messed up somewhere. I am using 2 damage analyzers. Your one and the Damage-Analyzer-II-2.0.5-beta. both say my sub is fine. Sp tyhe problem must be with SH4. I have reloaded 2 saves back and am going forward again.
cheers

There are differences in the way DA II and DC 1.0 report damage. DC 1.0 sorts compartments as compartments and weapons/equipment as weapons and equipment, as per the structure of the saved game files. DA II reports them as they appear in the game (You'll notice that some of the compartments in DC appear as equipment on DA II.) To be honest, I don't know which way is correct. One of the main reasons why I did it differently is because I've seen cases where DA II wasn't reporting any major compartment damage, yet I couldn't submerge without my sub coming apart at the seams. My thinking was maybe it was because SH4 was reporting some compartment damage as weapon/equipment damage (and DA II was mimicking this for consistency) so that critcal damage was going "unnoticed." Unfortunately, you've proven that neither way prevents this thing from happening! Now all I can say is that I hope either of these programs at least *cuts down* on the number of occurences.
Bill
Oh, and another silliness revisited:
I just had my deck gun blow up on me for no reason and injure my deck gun crew. It's the first timethat's happened since SH4 1.3. Maybe a training accident? ;)

This application is designed to run "alongside" SH4. Currently the only way to see the hidden damage is to analyze saved games. This means that you have to save the game and then look at the file. One feature that this application has is an "autosearch" feature that automatically finds the latest saved game and displays it. Unfortunately, you have to switch to the application to see it. At least you don't have to shut down SH4 to do it.
The link above is to the directory where the application is to be downloaded from. It's a simple FTP site.

Hawk_345:
This application in no way modifies any of the in-game data. The medals displayed are strictly read from the output files (and are *different* from what is displayed in the game - go figure! As mentioned in the history file, I believe these medals to be the medals you *should* have).
It is my believe that fullmetaledge's realmedals mod is correct, or at least more so, than stock (or Captain Cox's, which is based on the stock medals). The order of fullmetaledge's medals seem to be more logically ordered (it is arranged in the order that they should be worn on the uniform) and I've only seen one discrepancy between his order and how they appear in the output file. That is, the Silver Star and the Navy Cross seem to be switched - *but* his order makes so much sense, I'm wondering whether the output file is correct or not!
I hope this has answered your question. :)

Hi!
Greate idea to rework the tool! Do you rely on savegames, too, or do you get your data directly from the memory?
If you need any help, write me a mail and I might be able to add some knowlage.
Which langauge and which version do you use? VB.NET, VB 2005, C#?

SirHendrick:
I use VB 2005 to do my coding. This application also uses the saved game files, since it was easy to access and the information is there. I don't know how to plug into the game directly, though. An intermediate step would be to plug into the binary saved game files, since that is where the real information is - the text ouput files are just that - output files. Some of the info in there isn't updated either, probably because they are just vestiges left over from SH3. In SH3 I'm guessing they were the real saved game files.
I guess you would peek at memory locations, but how would you know where to look? Memory offset?

Sorry, I don't have VB 2k5 but 2k3 :-( The binary savegames are still unanalyzed, and the text outputs are, as you say, just a leftover. You can proove it, by changing values ==> it doesn't affect the game at all
Peeking memory locations would be a nice way, but it is a dirty hack and requires some OS changes or a loader, to remove the memory protection of windows.
As far, as I found out, SH4 is debugger resitant. So using a loader won't really work.
I'll go on vacation next week, but when I'm back, I'll have a closer look at the binary files. Perhaps I can find out a few things.

I'm sure VB 2003 is similar enough where the differences would be minimal. Any kind of code you might produce would either be directly usable, or easily modified to fit. I'd appreciate it if you could dig around a bit and see what you can find. You know, if you *do* finally hack the binary files, a whole new world of possibilities opens up, and not just for the Damage Control application, either!
Have fun with your vacation and try not to think of this stuff. :)

I tried running the program but it came up with this error: "Could not find a part of the path 'G:\Documents and Settings\Jim\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames'."
I have created multiple copies of the game. I used MultiSH4 to create multiple save directories in "My Documents". I have 2 other save directories one each for Trigger Maru(TM) and Real Fleet Boat(RFB). How do I get the Damage Control Analyzer to look into those other directories?

I tried running the program but it came up with this error: "Could not find a part of the path 'G:\Documents and Settings\Jim\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames'."

Interesting. I did not know that such a program as MultiSH4 existed. Damage Control assumes the default saved game path. You are the only one to complain about this so far, but the fact that even one person is affected by it means that I will try to come up with a solution as quickly as possible!
Sorry for the disappointment.

Bill, I'm not really disappointed, it looks like a great program and I would really like to use it. I was just wondering if there was a way to direct it to my save directories.

Leovampire,
Normally I would say you are right. But when I set up my computer with XP, it created the boot drive as drive "G". G is also the drive that I have my games installed on.

Hey, Jim:
Thanks for the info. No, there isn't a way to choose your saved game directory - YET! Give me a day or two and that feature will added!
BTW - the reason it was hardwired to use the default saved game path was so that it wouldn't have to search all your drives for saved games. (I believe this is why Damage Analyzer took so long to do its auto thing.) The next release of Damage Control will enable you to specify the folder that contains your saved game folders. Itwill remember the last path specified the next time it is opened, or you can specify a new path at any time (and it will remember the new path).
Bill
I have completed the raw code necessary to select the saved game folders location. Now all I need to do is add some error trapping and update the help file...

DA-II gets the searchpath in one of its ini files. It takes so long, if NO specific searchpath is defined, cause in this case, it searches the whole user profile ... :-)
You are doing a great job - what do you think, to save the settings in a ini-file or in the registry, so every setting set up once does not have to be set a second time?
This would save some time for the user.

As a matter of fact... this new version will save the last specified path so that once you set the path, it will remember it until you specify a new one. Is that what you mean?

Jim:
This is an interesting error, as the install path is read right out of the registry. I think you mentioned you installed several instances of SH4. That would cause the registry to change certain critical install values and cause Damage Control to throw exactly the exception you have reported. I've never installed a program to more than one location. Do you actually have more than one SH4 instance in your "Add or Remove Programs?" I'm thinking not, because all evidence of the first install seems to have been overwritten. What version of SH4 are you running?
I certainly will make you able to specify the install path in Damage Control, but be aware that this application will cater to those with default installs. (All that means is that if it finds the default install information it will use it without prompting for input; you'll have to go to the menu bar to change it.) Also be aware that this could cause minor/major headaches for you as you try to remember which install goes with which saved game path! In fact, I think I will change the first-time startup to show the saved game folders path dialog only if it cannot find the default one. Just for consistency.
I cannot guarantee when it will be done, as I will mostly be out of town this weekend. (That, plus hockey season has begun!)
Bill
PS - I hope you don't feel bad about making more work for me. It's users with unusual setups like this that make an application the best it can be!!!

Bill,
After I had installed the original SH4 using the default path, I followed the instructions for the MultiSH4, which were to copy the original install to a different directory. Yes there is only 1 instance in my "Add/Remove Programs." I am running version 1.3.
I kind of figured it was my set up that was the problem. I hope that this will not become too much of a problem child for you. I really appreciate what you have done for me and the rest of the forum members.
Jim IC1(SS)
PS - I found out why I got that error message. I forgot that I had to uninstall my original install of SH4, due to running out of hard drive space. I cleaned up my drive some and reinstalled SH4 and patched to 1.3. Then ran your program and it ran as advertised. (i.e. no errors). But I still have 2 copies of SH4 on my computer and your revised program worked great.
Thank you for help, sorry I tried to add more work for you.

As I said, Jim, it's no problem at all. You've just exposed two cases of my laziness for the world to see. ;)
The first was hardcoding the saved game path, which really should've been editable like it is now; the second is checking to see if a valid SH4 install was present. I knew, in the back of my mind, that one day both of these would turn up and bite me in the behind!
I will still include the ability to change the SH4 path that Damage Control should use (and therefore the data path) in case you have several MultiSh4 installs with different mods enabled. (I believe there are mods out there that change submarine crush depths, for instance, and that would have a direct impact on Damage Control. I don't know if these mods change the submarine cfg files, but if they do (and they should, to keep everything in synch), then Damage Control will use the updated data!

Hi Billko, I just started using your program and it's great. My main concern is always with hull damage, so this program is a life saver.
Anyway, a problem I ran into is that your program reported damage to my Aft Gun Deck which I don't have. I have a bow-mounted deck gun (which your program accurately reported as damaged). I also have a twin .50 AA Gun (damaged) on my Tambor class boat but the program failed to report that it was damaged at all.
The save game file is a fresh save game, not an overwritten one.
If you need any more details please let me know. And thanks again for this great program.

Letterboy1:
The first problem I can answer with authority. The sub is showing an aft gun deck (as well as a fore gun deck) because the possiblity of having an aft gun on this sub class is there; therefore, there is a slot for the aft gun deck and it can get damaged. Also, since there really isn't a gun there, and as such, isn't manned, I don't even know if it can be repaired or not (at least by your crew - refitting seems to be able to repair this kind of damage)! I believe that it is this kind of hidden damage that can cause the sub's crush depth to be unexpectedly shallow, even if the hull seems to be just fine. SH4 reports these decks as separate compartments, and are damageable (is that a word?). Oh, also - the aft gun deck might be reported under "Deck Watch" in SH4. I'm not sure. If you feel inclined to do so, could you confirm or deny this for me?
The second problem may be just that - a problem. It could be that I had done something dumb and isn't reporting the equipment/weapon damage for that compartment. (Do remember whether it was the fore or aft mounted AA gun?) If this is indeed what i think it is, this should be happening with all the subs with similarly mounted AA guns.
If you could send me the ActivePlayerUnits.upc of the offending saved game (you can peek at the name of the saved game in the replayinfo.rep if you use a text editor such as notepad), or just send me all of the ActivePlayerUnits.upc files, I'll try to identify what is going on here.
To anyone using this application, I'd like to hear if you've been seeing the same issues as letterboy1. (I don't believe it to be strictly Tambor-related.) Thanks!!! I'll be doing some testing, too.
Also, I really appreciate that you are taking the time to help me make this a better application, and I also thank you for the kind words. :)

to answer a question - it is the Fore AA Gun (no Aft AA Gun is even represented in this case).

Please let me know as soon as you have it so I can delete it from the server. Thanks.

So, okay. It was an easier fix than I had anticipated. I had forgotten that I made the application fairly programmer-friendly. :)
Anyways, this fixes a bug where AA Gun damage was being incorrectly reported on Tambor class subs. A few other classes were affected as well. Thanks to letterboy1, who took the time to alert me about this problem!

Why do you think I never saw this problem? I never fight toe to toe with even armed merchants with Werner's NSM, and I roleplay and dive whenever enemy planes threaten on the RADAR. I rarely use the AA Gun(s). (Although I've read somewhere that German U-boats were so successful at shooting down airplanes that at one point there were standing orders to engage enemy aircraft on the surface, rather than dive below! I think maybe an article on submarine tactics in Wikipedia.)

Heh heh, I'm very carefull, too. But ever since I figured out how to correctly make a contact report I've been getting that very challenging order "Engage escorts to prepare for follow-up attack." I can't resist the opportunity for extra renown, so some interesting duels and games of "chicken" follow.

I have a love/hate relationship with that order. With the little S-boat, I find many times I have to leave the objective incomplete because I run out of torpedoes. The order that is really difficult for me is to sink a capital ship. It seems that even sinking an aircraft carrier isn't sufficient tonnage to complete the objective!
Do you (or anyone, for that matter) blow ballast as an *offensive* weapon? I use it often if I know destroyers are looking for me and a target is close by. I blow ballast to get me to periscope depth so I'm in a position to launch some torpedoes before the destroyers have time to react to my presence. Problem is, sometimes I stay too long to see the fireworks and have to do some fancy footwork to avoid the depth charges. ;)
My proudest moments are when, by diving and returning to periscope depth, I can take out most of the convoy and the escorts have absolutely no idea where I am and the depth charges are dropping on the far side of the convoy. I'm not even going to say what my most shameful moments are. ;)

If I see there is only one plane I will stay surfaced and fight. I go to ahead flank once they spot me and trun towards me. Then I make a hard turn to make it hard for them to attack accuratly as the gunner shoot's them.
But if there are 2 of them I dive right away and do not enguage.
My best convoy attack was sitting at 100 feet down in front of a convoy at a dead stop. Once the forward escort was past me I rose up to Scope depth and waited for the first line of ship's to be on my left and right side's. Then used forward and aft torpedo's to sink 2 ship's at the same time.
Took time for the escort's to get through the panic of the merchants so I could watch them go down. Then I dove as far as I could down and was never found by the escorts. Of course I never moved the entire time so that helped.
But only managed to do that manuver 1 time in this game since I started using T.M. due to the new zig zag pattern the convoy's use.

Funny, I used to do that until I had one kamikaze and bounce off the deck of my boat... needless to say, my day (as well as my sub) was ruined. It was kind of funny because I guess they don't have an animated sequence for planes crashing into subs because it just kind of skipped off the fore deck, but the impact was enough to sink the sub!

Dang Leo, 100 Ft? I can't be at 100 ft any where near a destroyer without them sniffing me. I always have to stay beneath the thermal layer until that forward sweeper is past me; then I pop up. Except today one of the flanking escorts was uncharacteristically close to the front and made things difficult for me. Instead of a leisurely dead-stop launch of fore and aft torpedos at two juicy large modern freighters, I was running flank speed and trying to maneuver into firing position. So much for beautifully laid out plans.:stare:

You know as well as all of us that it takes trial and error to see what looks works and act's best for us all in game.

Wait and see what happens first Billko before you decied to mothball this great idea and work you did.

Thanks, Dave. I believe that DC goes beyond merely reporting damage. It makes reporting the damage fun. The nice thing is that you don't really know just how accurate the damage assesment is. I'd still continue using it and even try to avert my eyes from the actual hull damage display so I don't have an exact number to work with.
Besides, there's still the problem of getting damage to parts of the ship that don't show up - like having damage to a gun deck when there is no gun mounted there.
Maybe they'll fix the medals bugs so that they make sense and DC will be in agreement.
Sorry I haven't been around lately. Working 2nd shift so I'm away at night.

billko, do you happen to know, off the top of your head (such a strange expression, wonder where it came from?), if the home base reported by your app would be the new base when one of those infamous "I'm gonna change your base and not tell you where it is" glitches happens? If so, it would probably make life easier for those folks that have been wandering all over looking for home. Just save the game, alt-tab out, fire up your app and "viola" there's no place like home (now that you know where it is). Just a thought.

Yeah, DrBeast... The medals thing is way screwed up. In the stock game, for instance, you get a Submarine Distinguished Medal (Distinguished Service Medal) for bashing the heck out of your sub. I don't think so. However, in the saved game output file, you get awarded a Purple Heart. This seems more in line since you probably got banged up along with your boat...

I guess the mod you're using, "A new set of campaign layers," replaces the standard medals with new ones? (There's no such thing as a "first mission" medal in Standard SH4.) I cannot guess how DC will react to that.
BTW - you don't need a no-CD crack for v 1.3.

Dunno, might pull it altogether and check (I overwrote most of it when I installed Run Silent Run Deep Campaign Mod anyway), but I just don't care anymore. The patch is not too far away, let's see if these problems are solved.
And you're right about the no-cd crack...found it out the other day when I fired up the game (without the crack), and a few hours later I spotted the DVD lying at close proximity to me, and definitely out of the DVD-drive, while the game was still running! :D The DVD is now safely tucked away.

I haven't yet loaded v 1.4 on my computer yet; I imagine it won't need any work. Actually, I would still use it even though the new patch shows you the damage you've taken because I'm sure the new damage indicator will tell you *exactly* how much damage the hull has taken, instead of a "best guess" based upon the experience of the crew manning the damaged areas.
From the lack of anxious responses from anyone, I imagine my application is relatively unaffected by the new patch - although I'm curious to see how the medals being reported in the saved game output files reflect what you have in the game itself.
Thanks for the kind words re: Damage Control. :)

Wow, that's a new one to me! The info is read right out of the saved game output files. If you can prove that is the only time it occurs, then I can look for the "unknown" string and replace it with the correct info. Otherwise, if it's not unique to that instance, I'll have to leave it as it is. :(

can this mod be installed in base during a patrol?
can this mod be installed in base during a patrol?
Technically, this is not a modification of the game, but what I would call a "helper application." What it does is analyze the saved game of your choice, and gets the info out of those files. The intent is that when you get sub damage, you save your game and load it into Damage Control. It will give you an estimate of how deep you can likely dive. It is an estimate only because the guess is based upon the experience of the crew! I made it this way to give you a sense of how deep you can dive, yet the anxiety of not knowing exactly how deep you can go. Of course, the more experienced your crew, the more accurate the guess.
Since this does nothing to affect the game in any way, you can install it at any time and you can use it as soon as it is installed. You don't even have to exit the game.
I guess you got more info than you asked for. ;)
If you decide to give it a try, I hope you have fun with it!

Okay, so you guys got me foolin' around with the application again. I made the change so that Damage Control now reads the date and time from the command log, if at all possible. This makes the date and time as close to the in-game date and time as the last command issued (or whatever shows up in that text box at the top of the screen in-game).

All I can think of is that they're not using the flotillas.upc file. Sorry, I haven't upgraded to 1.4 yet, but if you could send me a copy of your X:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\Data\UPCData\UPCCampaignData\Flotillas.upc file along with a saved game activeplayerunits.upc file with you at Midway, I could see what, if anything, is going on with the files. If they were using the files properly, DC should've worked just fine.
You can send it to: billko@worldnet.att.net. I don't know what else to do...
Bill
Thank you, Digital Trucker, for sending me the much needed files. I see what the problem is and I can actually fix it now. (The flotillas.upc file is jacked up - the info is organized as an .ini file, and all the new bases have no space separating the key from the value.)
It's an easy fix, I'll try to get to it ASAP. For those of you who can't wait, you can edit the flotillas.upc file. Just add spaces where they should go and you should be just fine. Hint: Take a look at the info from one of the original bases and you'll see what it's supposed to look like.

PS - how do you like the way the in-game time and date update now? It's not perfect, but I found it usually works quite well when you make a save under pressure as updates via the text log are constantly coming in, giving DC an in-game time accuracy to within a few minutes of actual in-game time. Sometimes I like to save my progress during particularly boring parts to guard against game crashes, and the time/date can be days behind. In that case, I just give some sort of command (usually "return to course") just before saving, so I have an in-game time/date stamp.

Contrary to what a major increment in the version implies, there is nothing major that has changed. There is a special dedication to LeoVampire/Dave, but that’s about it. The reason for the jump to 1.1 is so that Dave could have a major rev all to himself. Kind of like a collector’s edition. ;)
For those who don’t know who Dave was, he was the driving force behind the awesome “Reflections on the Water” mod, and he passed away earlier this month. He had several life-threatening ailments, and one of them finally caught up to him and overtook him in his prime. He will be missed as a modder and as a great guy.

From what you are telling me, you've used this version previous to installing TM Overhaul, and now it doesn't work, right? The easy way out for me would be to say, "Well obviously this mod isn't compatible with DC," but that's just not my style. Obviously, TM Overhaul works with SH4 v1.4, so it has to work with DC. That's all there is to it.
Therefore, it's a bug that must be resolved. I see that TM modifies the game from stock by adding Dutch Harbor Flotilla. I've noted some anomalies with the way modders have "flotillas.upc" where their additions did not strictly follow the format of the original data, but nevertheless was correctly interpreted by SH4. I thought I had fixed all the issues related to that, but I think someone's found a way to deviate from the format and still be SH4 compatible, yet upset DC to the point that it just sits there and cries.
If you could send me your current "flotillas.upc" file, I'll be happy to take a look at it and fix DC. Thanks for reporting this bug!

I cannot anticipate what new subs modders may have made. At the moment, the different subs are hard-coded into the application and a fairly major rewrite is needed to change to add generic support for any submarine.
Compared to this project, changing this application to add support for added bases and flotillas was child's play...
Be patient... this may take a while!

Using 1.1 and now every time I open the analyzer I get this message:
Unhand led exception has occurred in your application. If you click continue the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you Quit, it will close.
Start index cannot be larger than the length of string. Parameter name: Startindex. Also mentions something about a JIT DebTo enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.
Any help will be appreciated. BTW I'm using TM overhauled.
I've been thinking about what you said. You said that this happens as soon as you launch DC?
Have you tried uninstalling and then re-installing DC? It sounds like something got corrupted.

Yes I have and with the same results.

The error means that it read an empty string and it's trying to grab a piece of that string at a certain position in that string. Since the length is zero, it causes the error.
If there was more to the error, could you post everything before that long-winded speech about JIT debugger? And it happens as soon as the application opens, right?
Thanks a bunch!

I don't know how or why, but the Analyzer is now working. Made no changes to either it or SH4. Only change to this computer in the past few days is I repaired Microsoft's Flight Simulation Acceleration. Go figure.

As long as it works! :hmm: Maybe it was a registry error that got fixed when you repaired MFSA. DC does look at the registry to determine where you installed SH4 and if it couldn't find the key it would return an empty string that would cause your error upon starting DC.

Can some one direct me to a actual DL site for Damage Analyzer.
the link only takes me to BlueSky.

Frank:
Hmmm, when i click the link it brings me to the subsim download area where it now resides. However, since it doesn't matter where the link brings ME, here is a link to the download page:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=1156 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1156)
If this fails, simply go to the subsim download area and look it up under "Utilities."
Good luck!!!

Thank you very much. I assume some links do not work correctly due to BETA test of Windows 7.
Your link worked.
Thanks much

I didn't look through this whole thread, so forgive me for asking but, does this work with SH4.1.5?

I believe it does, but since they "re-fixed" the medals fiasco, the medals in the app may not match the medals in the game.
I downloaded from the subsum site and when I run the setup program it responds with a message that an error occurred while attempting to installl. I have clicked on the Bluesky site and received a broken link message. Can Someone please direct me to a location with a working download. - Thanks in advance, Garry

Gar, your message is confusing. Did you actually download it or just click on the link? Please see post #142 and let me know if it worked.
Thanks!

Hi, Frank - I just emailed you an uncorrupted version of the zip that contains everything.
Also, I added the file to the Damage Control Download Area (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=4528)!
