View Full Version : Dillema at Curacao
Now, I haven't raided a harbor in a long time.
But U-502 has arrived at Curacao  There are a lot of tankers lying in the harbor, at least 4 smaller tankers and three Yankee big ones
A few neutrals too, their lights come in quite handy :smug:
There is at least one DD patrolling about. No Elco's in sight. I did just sink a large tanker some 25 km's out, so I'm a bit worried about DD's or Elco's boxing me in should I make an attack. Fortunately, the waters are deep, so no mines, but nets also have me worried.
Mmm...:hmm: :rotfl:

I'd say throw caution to the wind, and go for it. Sink em all!

I should also mention it is april 1942 and the weather is perfect, it's nighttime as well :hmm:
'It's too quiet, something is not right'...
'Nein, herr Kaleun, machen wir doch, fatte beute hmm'...

Then again....... maybe not.
Although Im pretty sure that someone else will prescribe this course of action, regardless of what year it is.

Sink the DD, fire remaining torps at merchies, surface and blow the hell out of the rest of them with the deck gun.
And if it takes you fancy sink the DD with the DG! :arrgh!::arrgh!:

same here. im a harbour specialist (like brag said). and if its just one DD then why worry. let em panic after seeing the fir's in the harbour. and after you sank em then sink the DD :arrgh!:
dont let coution ruin your day. in such conditions the coution is your enemy :88)
Like Mohr says, go for it. But I would zonk the DD first. It makes for a more relaxing operation. :D
U-502 has begun the attack and is almost in firing range of the first large US tanker (with my trusty steamer eels). Herr Kaleun almost fell asleep at the helm tonight so more to come :rotfl:
Anyway, not only is there a DD (the one with four smokestacks...), but there is a Flower corvette too. I have too few DG shells... The sea is like a sheet of billiart cloth, decks awash, langsame fahrt... it's soo quiet, no moon, lots of stars, very intense :yep: Local time is still only 20.30 or so... hehehe plenty of time... langsam...
Maybe I will attack the DD, but right now, the priority is hitting the two large tankers with steamers.
Temper, temper, my capitan - scan for nets and coast artillery before you begin an attack. They can really spoil your day if you'll be too fast:yep: After that, take the guards first, and kill them all :arrgh!:
There are coastal batteries. No nets so far, but I'm still about 10 km out of the piers.
Actually, the batteries is probably why I won't attack the escorts.
I want to delay detection until the last moment. Heck, at 2 kts, I keep whispering 'langsamm...' to myself when the occassional wave makes some noise across the (aswash) bow :rotfl:

Coastal batteries have limited angle of fire, so you may easy avoid their fire, if they're not pointed at the harbour of course. Their spotting abillity is another thing. Remember if you decide to use your deck gun be aware of planes even at night (after 1941):|\\ Be prepared, because after you comens an attack yankees will call for help, no doubt.
Fill yer boots son!:arrgh!: Be more aggressive!

I'd sink the escorts, fire my eels at the tankers, back out & reload out of range of the shore batteries..
It's 1945 for me and my XXI is almost in the caribbean :arrgh!: Save some tankers for me :rotfl:

Yesterday I reached Curacao in my XXI. It's a great deepwater port and I found it completely unguarded, except for some shore batteries. There were 4 tankers in port and I was able to approach at periscope depth. Since all the tankers were in berths, I could only shoot at them head on. I selected a T2 tanker for my first victim, set my eels on Magnetic and 1/2 meter under the keel. I fired two eels this way, both exploded under the tanker, but it was not damaged. I quickly made my way out of the harbor and back to the passage (chokepoint) where I like to hunt.
Anyone else experience this??

Are you sure? Curacao has a series of subnets placed very close to the docked merchants.;)

Yep it's really difficult to get a good shooting position in there. Other harbours are far easier to raid

I wasted a whole lot of torpedos bfore finding out about the nets.:88) Is there any way to get around them? Surfacing is not an option due to the tankers all be armed (late 43).

I am taking this as an intel report. Next year im going to head there and clean'em up. They are going to have to do a lot of harbor cleaning for the tree huggers.
Ok, I hit a 'modern tanker' and sank a small one just right of the first (from the left) lighthouse  The bigger one has not sunk yet, but it is listing to port and burning mightily fine :smug:
Just before that, I fired one eel at a large tanker just left of the second lighthouse. It hit a net, or, exploded just before the target :-?
The DD at the harbour has no clue, but the Flower came to investigate.
U-502 exchanged a few rounds (intense **** but we both missed!), I dived to 100 meters and got away for the earlier part of the night.
I did good but this night ain't done :arrgh!:
No fire from the batteries to my astonishment, might be too dark... or I'm out of range :hmm:
Tricky harbor and good fun

Hmmm... I didn't see nets, but that would make sense. I've seen nets before & ran into many trying to raid Scapa Flow :damn:
I'll look closer my next trip in..
Thanks!!

did you enter trough the south of scapa ? (assuming you used GWX)
never do in GWX couse there is a subnet at the entire south enterance. instead enter east or west and fight your way trough ;)

Once I've discovered a way to avoid subnets, but..... frankly you need to use long range torpedoes like T I type or T VII. Why ... simple. I think game engine or sth has a certain limitation. In my opinion game generates subnets when you're about 4-5 km from your targets or the place the subnet is. It happened to me near Halifax, where are about 15 juicy targets. I'd fired two torpedos from 7,5 km and sent two targets to the sea bottom. When I was about 3 km I fired another two torpedos and all of them hit subnet. Well, due to the fact that those two torps fired earlier were not "flying wunderwaffe", I assume that game generates subnets the way I mentioned above.:|\\ Of course it has to be confirm by studies.
