To The GWX Team and Players - Reading Material

I know I'm most likely posting this in the wrong form, but I wanted to get the input from the GWX guys,

What Naval Reference books have all you guys read to help create GWX? I have a few books at home and was looking at expanding my library. I enjoy looking up information on what ships I'm sinking and the such.
The books I own and have been reading lately are:


Cruisers of World War Two: An International Encyclopedia
U.S. Destroyers: An Illustrated Design History, Revised Edition
British Destroyers & Frigates: The Second World War and After
U-Boats: The Illustrated History of the Raiders of the Deep



What other books should I look at to expand my knowladge? I was thinking of getting
Battleships of World War Two: An International Encyclopedia
and
Destroyers of World War Two: An International Encyclopedia
if I can find the money since both are $80 or so.


And lastly, is there a good Escort Carrier book out their? I want something as a reference book, and not so much as a novel...history of.

Are a good couple of books

You should read books written about the Battle of the Atlantic, the Kriegsmarine and u-boat warfare. The best reference easily available is Clay Blair's: Hitlers U-boat War, the Hunters 1939- 1942 and Hitler's U-boat War, the Hunted 1942- 1945.

Other books that I'd recommend for starters is Michael Gannon's Operation Drumbeat, Herbert Werner's Iron Coffins, and Daniel Gallery's Twenty Million Tons Under the Sea (also titled, U-505). These books are easy reading, have a lot of background and insight into U-boat warfare.

I simply cannot express how useful these books are.

I've own and have read Iron Coffins and Hunters & Hunted by Blair. Those three books are awesome! Those books are what got me started on learning and researching the Battle of the Atlantic.

I'd also suggest any book written by Jak P. Mallmann Showell. A little bit dry reading but a fine source of information. Some of his books are very difficult to find, therefore high dollar; but, most are reasonable.

This author has made a career of studying u-boats and the Kriegsmarine. His father, Jak Mallmann I believe, was a petty officer who died on a u-boat during WWII.

Since the inception of the first version of GWX the list of reference books that have been scrutinised has actually been expanded upon. Clay Blairs books (as referred to by the Kpt. have in the main 'been the bible/yardstick' and there is further reference made to sources in the GWX manual :arrgh!:

Gotta agree with Kpt, Hitlers U boat war the hunted is the best U boat book ever to be honest, I always got one next to my computer.

German Destroyers OF World War Two, by A.J. Whitley (this one is a great listing of all technology and history of individual ships and operations)

I also have a fairly complete collection of Warship Quarterly, by Conway's. No one studying naval history should miss these. Period.
