Better Scopes
v. 1.5.1
based on work by Captain Cox
by lethal
Description:
This mod aims to visually improve all of the different "masked" views present in SH4. This inlcudes both periscopes, the binocular, the TBT and the gunsight for the deckgun. This is a work in progress which means that certain aspects of the mod will probably be improved upon in a future version.
Installation:
This mod is best installed using JSGME. Copy the folder "betterscopes v1.5 default" into your JSGME "MOD" folder and activate.
To use any optional parts of the mod you need to copy them to the appropriate place inside the "betterscopes v1.5 default" folder. Here is a short description as to what each does and where it needs to go:
All the dds files go to "\data\menu\gui\betterscopes\", the menu.ini goes to "\data\menu\".
"Bearing strips for different resolutions":
Better Scopes bearing strips are designed to be very accurate but unfortunately the interface scaling system used in SH4 makes it impossible to create one bearing strip that is equally accurate in all screen resolutions. I have included several versions so that users with different screen resolutions can take advantage of the new and improved bearing strip. If the need arises i can add more...
"Clear as day masks", "Dirty as hell masks":
The default installation of Better Scopes comes with views that show clear signs of use with visible fingerprints, scratches and other dirt partially obscuring the view. However, as tastes (and eyesight ;) ) differ among different people i have also included a version without any and one version that is even more dirty and scratched.
"menu for TM 1.6"
In it's default configuration Better Scopes is not compatible with any mods modifying the menu.ini without having the user manually adjust that file. Since "Trigger Maru" is a very popular modification that does have a modified menu.ini i included an already modified version, so that people who want to use Better Scopes with that mod can do so without having to manually adjust their menu.ini.
Note to users of previous versions:
It is recommended to uninstall any previous versions of this mod as the structure of it has changed and files are located in different locations now. Also: the changes listed in the changelog are always meant to be from a vanilla version. i've removed two entries going from 1.4 to 1.5 and may do so again in the future. For this reason it is recommended to start from an unmodified menu.ini when doing changes manually.
Note to users of other mods that modify the menu_1024.ini:
Before enabling the mod via JSGME or before copying over the files you need to remove the menu_1024_768.ini from the mod and adjust your menu_1024.ini manually as changes from other mods would be lost otherwise. A detailed changelog of the menu.ini can be found in 1.5_menu_changes.txt.
Deinstallation:
To remove this mod, simply delete the files added by it and reverse the changes to your "menu_1024_768.ini" or disable it using JSBME.

That was quick! Thanx again, lethal.
Very nice thank you. I can't wait to load it up. But before I do...
I noticed you had versions for 1024, 1280 and 1600 horizontal resolutions. My monitor's native res is 1920. Can I use the 1600 version while running the game at 1920 without any game affecting inaccuracies?
If not, can I adjust the dds file so I can use it? Not sure what app to use with that. Photoshop maybe?
Thanks

it's not as accurate but the fix is easy enough. either you scale up the dds or i'll upload a pack containing more resolutions in a while. I'll wait a bit though to give ppl a change to tell me the screenwidths they are using so i don't have to do this on a regular basis.
the steps are pretty easy:
you say you have a native res. of 1920 - 1920 is 1.2 times 1600. in order to have the bearing scale accurate again you need to scale the width (not the height though, or you'll get some clipping along the top and bottom) of it by 1.2 and save. be advised that you'll need a width that is a multiple of 4 for dds files so you may need to adjust the resulting width by 1 or 2 pixels.
to be able to open dds files in photoshop you need that dds plugin from nvidia. get it here (http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html).
can i use this in conjuntion with tm1.6 ie install along side , or does tm1.6 already have an earlier version of this mod .
it's not included in tm 1.6 afaik. i included a menu.ini to use with that version though. you'll find it in the optional folder ;)

I use your 1.4 version, an outstanding mod thankyou. I notice you are considering other resolutions for 1.5. May I make a request for 1440 x 900 please?
Thanks again.

i'll add 1440 to the pack. if anyone wants another screenwidth added please make a request via post or pm. i think i should also explain what i mean by "accuracy":
it's NOT like the bearing strip doesn't show exactly which direction you are looking - that part is *always* 100% accurate. i tried making it even more useful by making the markings that are off to the left and right also be accurate. that can be see by the fact that the lines remain static on a place instead of appearing to "float".

the 1600 variant *should* be ok for you since it's only a minor discrepancy but i'll add it to the list as well :)

I see in the readme that there are supposed to be the green lines, but the mod I downloaded here is grey colored, and I cannot see any of the markings on the scope at night. Any plan for a release to change the scope markings to dark green like it was in v1.2 i believe?

Hate to be a pest so long after the release, but I can't seem to get this thing to work after attempting to scale it up. I don't use adobe,so I cant use the nvidia plugin. I converted it with dds converter v21, scaled it using jasc, converted it back, re-enabled it... and got a solid black scope. Call me braindead, but I'm at a loss here and would really like to get this up to 2560. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
i'll take a look once i'm finished with what i'm doing atm. which is already more than one project ;)
my plan was to actually make the lines all change color from day to night but unfortunately i wasn't able to find a solution to some problems related to this. making them all gray is my attempt to work around some of those problems - once i figured out how to get them all to change color i'll release an updated version.
as for scaling the scope up - which part of it do you mean? the scope itself *should* be scaled up automatically by the game; only the bearing indicator seems to be of fixed size and requires some scaling when using a resolution currently not supported... actually it already works, just not as well as intended.
ghost_666_rider
09-15-07, 04:43 PM
Sorry for not being specific... The bearing indicator is solid black. I dont know if I pooched something in all the conversions or touched something I shouldn't have in jasc.
(doubled the horizontal pixel count of 1280 file.. tried to clean up the humbers a bit with the pencil tool... pooched)
tried using the plugin in paintshop pro? it says you can do that here (http://download.nvidia.com/developer/NVTextureSuite/Paint_Shop_Pro_Steps.pdf)
the problem is that you must have overwritten or deleted the alpha channel. i don't use psp so i can't go into specifics here unfortunately.

Good guess... my bad! I did mess with alpha channel. Have the kid over my shoulder to keep on the right path this time and it worked. Thanks for your time sir.

I've got a bit of a problem which makes me see nearly double vision :)
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k122/fleurenf/SH4Img4-11-2007_144151_634.jpg
Using 1280 x 800 resolution but have a widescreen monitor.
Anyway I can fix this as it is also partially obscured at the top.
All other scopes are no probs.

Yeah, I prolly should have spoke up about this earlier myself. I really like the mod otherwise, but can't use it because of this. I'm running at 1920x1200 BTW.
It looks like l3th4l finally gave (or tried to give) the binocs the right or real world view - that of a circle - vice the traditional game device where the binoc view is represented as a sort of figure 8 laid sideways. I hope he or someone can come up with a way to fix this.
JD
haven't seen that before... seems like when using widescreen only part of the screen actually gets rendered...
to confirm - could you take a screenshot with the default binocs please?
this will probably be a pain in the arse because i can't test resolutions like that myself and a lot of the work *is* trail and error... but i see what i can come up with. don't expect anything tomorrow though as i'm currently rather busy with RL and ROW after that.

Here's a link to a previous post that contains a screenie of my default binocs....
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=661220&postcount=689
Note it still has the sideways figure 8 configuration, but no double vision rings.
A comment you made got me thinking though... are the hi res/wide screen folks the only ones seeing the binoc and TBT representations as a sideways figure 8, or does everyone see that? I was assuming everyone, but something you said made me think that some are seeing it as a circle, like the periscope representations.
Is that true?

just a quess but the black line at top is to do with widescreen at 1280x800 it wont display properly at 60 hz the text messes up ect on certain monitors, but i dont see any line on mine at 1280x768 or 1280x800, the desktop is at 1440x900, 60hz. you may want to try your desktop refresh overide rate, sync it to same as ingame mode. im sure i had this problem a while back before i started running in 1440x900, and im sure i got round it by going down to 1280x768 and altering the refresh rate plus a a few edits in the 1024_768.ini ,but it was a some time ago so im not 100% sure what the edits were now.
as for the figure 8 if you look at the dds i think its deliberatly done to give the effect of your eyes being in the uzo & binoculars. however i used to get no end of complaints from ati users when i modded for cs, yet all the nvidia users were pleased as punch. as i used to make and test my stuff using a nvidia chipset graphics card ,and the ati cards rendered completly differantly. this may be the case here. ie it was compiled and tested in ati and gave no annomalies yet under nvidia graphics ingame it does,or vice versa.
mhh - i'm not sure i'm understanding correctly...
that "figure 8" should be there by design... did you want that gone? i thought you were talking about the black strip along the top of the screen??
whenever i make a new version of this i'll try to come up with something more convincing... (while still giving the visual clue that you're looking through the binocs)

they want the figure 8 gone i think because its showing up too much ingame.
personally i like it. as for the black line they both have it in theyre screenies but i think theyre not too bothered bothered by it, though it was mentioned in the initial post about the figure 8.
the figure 8 i suspect is a graphics engine rendering issue, mine isnt half as obvious as theyre screenshots seem to show.
Well, if you're asking what *I* would prefer... :)
I'd prefer that it look like it really looks when looking through binocs... circular. Never could figure out why they did that figure 8 thing.... here in SH4 or in the movies.
But it's not that big a deal. I'd use your mod regardless... I think the lens and cross hairs look great. I wouldn't want to even ask for something like that unless a large number of people agreed and thought it was important.
The double circle thing in the binocs and TBT though....? That's got to go :)
RE the dark area at the top of the screen. No one seems to have any idea how to get rid of that... short of dropping down to some lower resolution.

Thanks for the responses guys. If the figure 8 is meant to be there, than no probs. I like this mod, it  Now for the screen rendering, I have the monitor and game both set to 1280 x 800 @ 60Hz and the black area at the top is still there. I've tried it with different monitor res also. There's no point changing the res of the game unless I want to go back to less than 10 fps but that's another issue.
What I did fail to mention also was that has anyone noticed a framerate drop when looking through the scopes, binocs and UZO at zoom factor? Mine seems to skip a frame and is creating a slight havoc on the cpu.

if thats any good to you ill send you my 1024x768.ini , but youll have to find the relevent lines for tbt and binocs yourself and copy them into yours as mine is a custom nightmare :) i have stuff added everywhere
res above was 1280x800 before i scaled it down to post
i think below brings it closer and loses the strip on the tbt, but im not 100% sure done months ago

I think it would be better if the binocular and TBT images were circular rather than the 'horizontal 8' image we always get in games. I've never looked through a pair of USN issue binocs or a TBT, but every other pair of binocs I've ever looked through did not have a figure 8 image. Its not possible AFAIK because your brain places the two images together giving you a stereoscopic image. The advantage of this over a telescopic image is that it gives you greater depth perception, a telescopic image appears flat compared to a stereoscopic image.

again im quessing because of the time span since i tried this, & im not even sure if the game uses the binocular_empty as a background on the tbt . but i cant see these giving you errors if you try them, anyway if they do im sure your smart enough to back up 1st.
i also have this that doesnt match, but as i remember i think its removing x hair from bino view

Cheers De@dMe@t, I'll check it out 2night. If all else fails, I can always revert the TBT back to stock.

i took the 8 out if you want it let me know and ill post the dds, i sorta mixed the si optics tbt up with the better scopes one and ended up with this. though you do get an exta bearing line, ill see what i can do about that & the binos too, but no promises im very rusty.

Now that is neat stuff De@dMe@t. That would be great if I could have that. The Bino and the scopes are just fine. Just the TBT would be great.
Update: By adding Mat 0=data/menu/gui/betterscopes/binocular_empty.dds and disabling the other field, that solved the strip issue. Thanks for your help De@dMe@t
