View Full Version : [WIP] Complete RL Emblem Pack
As mentioned elsewhere on these threads CapZap1970 and I have commenced work on the complete Real Life U-boat Emblem Pack.
The plan is to create high res emblems matching all the real life U-boat emblems we can identify. Where a boat carried more than one emblem we plan to create the main emblem that was carried for that year. e.g. a file U20 1940-41.TGA will be the emblem that we can identify as being carried for the bulk of that period. Where more than one emblem was carried in a year we will do what we can to accommodate as many of these as possible.
Where more than one emblem was carried at the same time, (Some subs carried one emblem on starboard and another on port side of tower), we will do both emblems in separate files but obviously only one can be chosen by the player at a time.
We are not planning to make any modifications to the tower configurations so emblem size and position on all towers will remain as per stock. The emblem files however will be created in high res and the result will be scaled to provide a very good quality image without making them ridiculously large files to load, so the quality will be as good as we can make them.
There are several hundred emblems to create so this will be a labour intensive and quite lengthy piece of work so we will use this thread to give updates on progress.
We will advise release when we are ready and not before.

Thanks. They are samll lo res scans from the same book. Been thru it and helps as a reference to what was on what boat only. Not much help in the actual build though.

Im sorry but I must decline your offer. I aplogise for not putting my hand up to help you out. My reason is that; I myself have many mods on the go & juggling family (wife two daughters & a Alaskan Malamute wolf) is just blending nicely.
So if there is someone out there that wants to start as a new modder or has modded or is thinking about modding please consider TarJak's call for help.

I assume these emblems are coming from scanned/googled images.
Then magic wand them.
Then resize.
Then paste into a blank/coloured background.
(something close to that anyway)
If you can create an action for this, you can open all the images in PS, press play, sit back and watch PS do it's magic.;) At the very least, you can use this method to complete a certain section of the process, if not all of it.
I have used actions before to great effect.
2000 (ish) Photos, cropped, enhanced, resized and then montaged into thumbnails into a HD ready Jpeg. Took about 10 mins to create the action and another 5 mins to let the action run.
Find out how to do this, it will help.:up:
Yeh that's how I handle the conversion to .TGA as well. It saves a bit of time in the initial set up but still doesn't let you colour all the bits that need colouring or editing. Even at high res there are the occasional rough edges that need to be smoothed out or areas that are too black that need to be colored by hand.

Well after a bit of a slow start production is starting to step up with a few new recruits to the cause coming on board. I'd like to announce that as well as Reece, Coronas and the_belgian have agreed to help out on the project and are busy making emblems as fast as we can.
I'm also talking to some other candidates and hopefully will have some more team addtions to announce soon.
Will post another update when something else happens.:arrgh!:

This mod is now on hold until the new year. I've got several RL committments over the next month that will not allow me to progress it. To the guys who have worked on it thanks for your assistance so far. I don't want to give up on it completely however there is no way I can continue until I am clear of the committments I have. I'll update this thread when there is a change in status.

Damn it :damn: I wish this thread was not reborn:damn: as I'm almost finished the most comprehensive emblem mod ever made containing each and every U-boat emblem as they were allocate in real life [all 1,153 commissioned U-boats], no fake ones, just fairdinkum ones.
Oh well, two modders heading in the same direction :doh:
Hee Hee Venatore, Tarjak, I and a few others had been working on this for a long time, but with sooooo many emblems (all done in PS with layers etc) got to around 1/3rd or so & pooped out!:lol:

Tell me about it, a one man show this end, and some of these boats had up to four emblems throughout the war, some are really hard to find, so in the end I brought a book that ended that little drama, scanning and merging, very slow process, but very addictive as well.
If your missing a emblem on a boat let me know and I'll throw the emblem your way ;)
We done exactly the same thing, scanned em in, they were all B&W, they are now, so far, in colour!:yep: Will have to PM Tarjak, to see what He wants to do with these, seems a waste to do everything twice, I'd be happy to hand em over but this was Tarjaks project!:doh:
