View Full Version : Constant Air attacks

Does anyone else find them as tiresome as I do?
I don't mind getting a few to add to the flavour of the game, but getting constant ones for about 2 or 3 days every time you go anywhere near land seems a bit too much for me. It's just getting annoying now.
Just one man's opinion.

Search planes flew continuallly, out on long race track patterns to and from their base. It's a simple case of charting a course around the bases, and making sure you don't engage any of them. The moment you're seen, the area will be flooded with them for days. If you are going to head towards a base, do it directly to minimise the overlap.

Good point, I'll take that on board.

I don't know what (if any) mods you are running but I have little trouble with planes. I am running 1.3 with 1.5 TM mod (plus a few others). I put a circle around known bases or landfall out to about 600 miles. When I get within this area I usually cruise submerged during the day. With the newest versions, I get plenty of warning by radar so even cruising during the day surfaced is quite possible for speed. From all I've read, a/c were quite troublesome to US subs. Having to dive over 8 times daily was certainly not unheard of for some. Depends on the area I guess. Many convoys in RL also had almost constant air cover. Would be nice to see that modeled.

Yea there pesky alright...
The mods mentioned above do 'adjust' the air traffic a bit and is the way to go.

A stand-alone mod called "reduced air traffic" was made some time ago.
You can do a search for it or check the sticky mods section...

From what ive been observing lately, it feels like the game randomly spawns aircraft near you. I honestly don't think they fly around the pacific looking for you. What makes me think this is going from pearl to Honshu, and ive noticed a good number of planes approching from the north. There ARE no airbases up north that are within range. On top of that, they seem to fly criss cross at, or near your location. On top of that, ive reduced some of the airbases to just 2 or 3 squadrons, (as opposed to the orginal 6 to 9), and frequency doesnt seem to have been reduced all that much. It feels like the games making a decision, aircraft, or no aircraft? If it decides to spawn aircraft, then thats it, you may as well stay submerged.
I think the aircraft wave frequency can be adjusted tho so the time between these air attacks is less.

This is the one, see the read-me.
ParaB's tweaked air strikes, JSGME-compatible version, V 1.0
This mod reduces the probability of enemy air strikes and increases the pauses between them. To make up for that, the effectiveness of airstrikes has been considerably increased during day (but decreased during night).
In gameplay terms this means that you'll get attacked by aircraft a lot less, but if you see an aircraft they will pose a much more serious threat.
This mod works best during early war, 1941/42.

I dunno about up north, but depending on my course I often catch the same aircraft on the return leg of their search flight. Do keep in mind the fleets will have search planes themselves.
But from what you're saying, it may be a case of that. However whenever I see aircraft I can always trace a line back to their base.

There is no way the game models planes from take off all the way to your location. They spawn when you enter the maximum limited flight distance for the planes from their bases.

After spending a week near Rabaul June 1943 in my "Sink the Yamato" patrol,
I have my aircraft file tweaked to nearly perfect. I usually saw the flight of a
H8K in AM, PM & evening coming from the direction of Rabaul and then heading
back about 10 min later. If I was sighted by air or surface, I saw zeros come
in to bomb the sea where I had been sighted. If I torped a merchant, Bettys
would usually come in to the help the DDs put holes in the water. They were NEVER very accurate. This to me was about as realistic as I could expect....

I've gone right past some bases and seen nothing. Maybes aye, maybes naw.

What im experimting with now is reducing airbase range, and long range aircraft to a maximum of 1000 KM. Stock, that airbase on wake island could concievably send planes against midway. Given the numberious airbases scattered all over the pacific, this is some tremendous overlay. Ive also decreased squadron numbers for long range craft from 6 and 9 to like 2 and 3. So hopefully this works out. On a side note, im also upping the chance for an airstrike if detected from 10% to 70%. :arrgh!:
