I have the mod that changes the uniforms to be more correct. But I noticed that the Chiefs wear Officer Uniforms and hats. Is that correct to the mod?

Uniforms worn underway (commonly called 'undress' uniforms) for officers and chiefs were very similar. Khaki short sleeve shirt (collar devices/NO shoulder straps), khaki long pants with web belt, 'ball' cap (NOT the full dress officers hat). The Full Dress Officers Hats look really KOOL in port, but are worse than worthless when trying to peer into the periscope eyepieces. Its much easier to just spin the ball cap backwards. I can't see the men's feet, but 'tennis' shoes were worn on subs cause they don't make as much clatter when walking around.

Enlisted clothing always looked OK to me: Chambre' shirt and Dungrees and the 'Dixie Cup' cap were pretty standard.

Would be nice to see the whole crew whole crew strip down to skivvies when at Silent Running for awhile. Things tended to get rather 'tight' since the fans/AC were off then.

Does the MOD fix any of this? I don't have it (yet).

Underway uni's circa 1969-1972. Officers and chiefs in khaki, without exception. Enlisted in dungarees and black boots. Almost all wore baseball caps.

Some of the ww2 pics I've seen had chiefs wearing dungarees and chief caps.

The only way to change the hats for example is to look at the
CrewMembers3D.UPC
found in
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\UPCData\UPCCrewData
Open with Notepad
and look for
[CrewMember3D 2]
ID=ClothingCPOs
NameDisplayable= CPO Clothing
or
[CrewMember3D 3]
ID=ClothingOfficers
NameDisplayable= Officers Clothing

these lines decides what kind of head gear the crew should wear
CrewMemberBodyPart1= Normal, Headgear, sapca_o#Head, 1, NULL
CrewMemberBodyPart2= Normal, Headgear, NULL, 1, NULL

sapca_o#Head= one of 12 different 3D models of officers hats
Headgear, NULL, 1, NULL= I think no headgear

So you could try by replacing the
CrewMemberBodyPart1= Normal, Headgear, sapca_o#Head, 1, NULL
to
CrewMemberBodyPart1= Normal, Headgear, NULL, 1, NULL

WELCOME ABOARD!!

I was on a destroyer rather than a sub, so the rules were different. I just wanted to add that while underway I rarely saw any regular enlisted wearing a cap or hat of any kind.

One of the things I would like to work on when the S3D tool gets towards its final stage is one of these

On a Coast Guard Cutter underway, everyone wore some kind of headgear out on the weatherdecks and bridge. Officers preferred the 'pisscutter' campaign cap, dixie cups for everyone else.

Captain Cox:
Yeah, that's the ball cap I was talking about.

I found the file indicated. Above that block is another that indicates .tga files for caps:

All those "Cap" textures are Heads/Face textures and has nothing to do with Hat/Caps
You can check them out here
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Textures\TNormal\tex
do a search in that folder for "cap" and you will see
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/3354/facecu6.jpg

Actually to view them if you dont have photoshop you can download this little prog
"DDS thumbnail Viewer"
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/dds_thumbnail_viewer.html

Or if you do have Photoshop, get this DDS plug in
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html

All the data labeled "Headgear" in the CrewMembers3D.UPC has to do with hats/caps
There are three types for the crew on the boat
Found in the same folder as the faces
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Textures\TNormal\tex

But they are called "Sapca"
One is the Officers Hat "sapca_od01"
One is the Enlisted men's classical Navy hat "sapca_md01"
One is a Southwester hat, used by all in heavy rain/storm "sapca_mpd01"

CaptainCox,

Thanx for the info. Interesting to see how they make 3D heads.

I took a good look around the control room of my S-Boat last night. The OOD (XO?) was standing at the chart table as usual with the sleeves of his shirt rolled up, and unbuttoned down at least three buttons, wearing NO cap at all. I swear on the last patrol he was wearing a full dress officer's hat. Or maybe that was the OOD on the Balao Class I was using for a single patrol. Perhaps the S-Boats were a little more 'informal'??

Whichever . . .

BTW, one of my OODs was always giving me the 'evil eye'. He ALWAYS had one eye on me either in the control room or on the bridge. Really gave me the creeps! If I were a Klingon, I'd be thinkin' he was about to assinate me and take over the boat. :arrgh!:

The way the code is done in the CrewMembers3D.UPC is weather dependant.
So if you check for example
[CrewMember3D 3]
ID=ClothingOfficers
NameDisplayable= Officers Clothing
you will see

Normal
;*************
CrewMemberBodyPart1= Normal, Headgear, sapca_o#Head, 1, NULL
CrewMemberBodyPart2= Normal, Headgear, NULL, 1, NULL
CrewMemberBodyPart3= Normal, Torso, bust_m03, 1, bust_od03.tga
CrewMemberBodyPart4= Normal, Torso, bust_m01, 1, bust_od01.tga
CrewMemberBodyPart5= Normal, Legs, pantaloni_m01, 1, pantaloni_od01.tga

Compared with
;*************
; Hot Weather
;*************
CrewMemberBodyPart6= Hot, Headgear, #Normal, 0.5, NULL
CrewMemberBodyPart7= Hot, Headgear, NULL, 1, NULL
CrewMemberBodyPart8= Hot, Torso, bust_m01, 1, bust_od01.tga
CrewMemberBodyPart9= Hot, Torso, bust_m02, 1, bust_md02.tga
CrewMemberBodyPart10= Hot, Legs, pantaloni_m01, 0.2, pantaloni_od01.tga
CrewMemberBodyPart11= Hot, Legs, pantaloni_o02, 1, pantaloni_od03.tga

So you where probably heading out in warm weather, and/or as the code gives the guys caps/hats in a sort a random fashion, you might have been looking at that occurring.

How do you know what number coincides with the crew member on the boat?
