A call to all the great modders on this site!

A few months back, probably in January or so, there was a topic on here loosely talking about making a Type XVIII Uboat. The topic fell on the wayside and I guess the idea was dropped. I was playing today and really got the urge to try and make that boat, even though it was never built. I've never tinkered around with major modding, but have editted cfgs and done quite a few skins in my game. So here are my questions.

1. Since the XXI is built mostly on XVIII plans, would it be possible to clone the XXI and use it as the XVIII?

2. What programs would I need to do this? Or has someone already converted it? I don't understand hex editting at all, so any advice that could be given (if needed) would be appreciated.

3. If I don't have to hex edit, that would be great. Then all I have to do is rename all the parts and lines in cfg?

Basically, I need a little direction and help to get me started on how I should tackle this. I'm not looking to build a supership, or to go up against the uberboat mod being made. I'm just looking to alter the history in the game a bit based on historic plans. I think it would be awesome to make this boat work and share it here!

witha little research it looks as though it just had a different engine type and much less batteries? if this is true would that be just a property tweak?

If this is true and the only differences are much less batteries and an other engine, does it make sense to modify a Type XXI into such a sub?:oops:

i wouldnt think it would make much sense especially with the fcts

1. it was never completed

2. Its difficult to add a new sub to SH3 without replacing an existing sub

This sentence means i am agaisnt makeing this sub

It means that i can not see a reason for having this sub. Maybe to fit harbours and as AI-sub but not as a playable sub.:roll: I am not a fan of subs who have not seen service.

oh i see i misunderstood. and i doubt it can even be used as an AI sub. i mean it never left drydock simple as this.

Granted, it was never built, and the XXI was favored over it. I was just looking to add a new, different sub to the game, kind of like Serg did with his awesome S class. If I remember correctly someone did make that playable, even though it was a little glitchy.

I wasn't trying to build the engine system that it ran (a type of peroxide), just simulate it. So basically, I should use a tweak program to change it's stats... my only question is this, how can I change the name in the game to read XVIII instead of XXI?

Any further help is appreciated.
