View Full Version : [REQUEST] Visible Flood Waters?

Curiosity just came over me as to this question: has anyone made, or even considered, making a mod making water visible when the sub is flooding? For instance:

I was on a patrol to Scapa Flow and my U-boat took heavy damage during a depth charge attack when I was working my way through the Irish Sea. It's always bugged me that when stepping into the radio room (which was half full of flood waters) there was no water visible on the floor, slowly working its way up. This is the same for the command room, as it always has been.

So, what I'm wondering (or looking for) is for a mod that adds flood waters to rooms that are filling up.

Thanks.

Now, a mod like that would have been already done if it would be possible without the SDK.

Same thing was said about exhaust smoke for subs.......
What's the material for water (It's ID)? Why would it be so hard to do? I'm asking because I haven't looked into this area yet or I should say I haven't explored it yet.

Smoke exhaust is different from this. There's already smoke exhaust on ships that can be made for subs. But the visible flooding inside the uboat isnt modelled in anyway in SHIII and it would have to be done from a scratch. Which would most likely require an SDK.

That's true, but I think Ubisoft has pretty much abandoned SH3 and moved on to SH4.

Pity we don't have more professionals here.

I look at what's been achieved in the improvement of SH3 and reckon there are a lot of talented folk hereabouts :yep:

Seriously guys, how is the water 'made'? What's the material ID for it? It has (or should) be listed in the materials.dat file somewhere. This would be something neat to add. Remember to try and not succeed is not failure, it's the beginning of finding other ways to do it......:|\\

Last night as I was getting myself drunk, I had been contacted by 'someone' who said that it MIGHT be possible.

He also told me the possible way to do it (Didnt go in detail, but in overall), but I dont think I am to reveal it. To quote him: I'm leary of ripoff artists!
Na na na na na na na na naaa! :p

I love people like yourself, you make me determined to show you up.

from the logic side...it must be possible. if you might get the water-surface, which the ocean is shown from, into the boat you have your flooding. coding must be like there is an ocean surface in the boat itself. yo if you crack how the ocean is done, you might get the surface into the boat model.

right?

That's the route I'm planning on looking into! Just have to find the material that the water-surface is made from......

I think the problem you'll run into is first, that you'll will have the current sea state in your boat too, and second that you'll need to get SH3 to recognize the water level in the control room or radio room, I mean it could probably be possible to link that to the water levels that are displayed in the damage control screen but I wonder if that could be done without changes to the code itself.

Hey I'd love to see real flooding in 3D too, but I think my planesman won't like it when the controlroom is halfway underwater...

true he may not like it and true we may have sea state in the control room BUT it would be a step in the right direction. Think big, build in small little steps........

all you can do is: try -> fail (for a few times) -> keep trying -> succeed

OR sometimes you keep trying and fail because it was all in vain to begin with.

Here in the UK we have a saying "if at first you dn't succeed, try then try again"

When your feeling as if you can't see the wood for the trees, it's better interpreted into....."if at first you don't succeed, bugger off and go home"

Here in Australia we have a saying; If at first you don't succeed then it was probably too hard in the first place. Lets go to the pub!:rotfl:
