Hi RM2(SS)...
You will have to be patient, at least for the 1st patrol.
When you come back to base from your 1st patrol then you will be able to choose an emblem but not before you completed it.
Besides, any change to your sub (emblem, weapons upgrade, torps, etc) before your first patrol can cause you loose all your renown. ;)

You mean you saved your SH3 folder from C drive?
In that case, I don't know what is going on. Just a question. If you reload your last save file, does it show the emblem you had? If not, maybe the emblem you were using is missing... Were you using an emblem from an separate emblems pack or from the ones in the game?
Try to reload your last save, go to your base, finish your patrol and try to choose an emblem again... if that fails, you will have to wait for some other kaleuns advices. ;)

Not necessarily answering the latest question, but to answer the more general "How do I get an emblem when I first start a career?" question, the answer is easy.
Both SH3Cmdr and GWX have the changes required to get your emblem immediately upon starting a career. No changes are necessary. Otherwise, you can make the changes yourself.
Open up Basic.cfg. Under the RENOWN block, look for "FirstRankRenown" and "SecondRankRenown". Set them to 100 and 350 respectively. Save and Close Basic.cfg.
Done!
@RM2, try this with your career anyway and see if it helps.
