Twisty-Periscope-Thingy-Mod
Adds a small detail to the periscopes on all the type VIIb/c conning tower variants (JSGME compatible).

Download:

(Ive squeezed the file as hard as i can but its still a fairly hefty 17.9Mb, a sizeable chunk of download for such a small addition but it couldnt be avoided.)
Many thanks go to DivingDuck for solving my texture problems..... also dmlavan who originally suggested modding the twisty bits long before i thought of it.
REALLY PRETTY !!!
I like very much this attention to details ! :D
P.S. : do you work on other types as well ? :p :hmm:
This is great! Downloading now .....:yep:
Thanks.
Got it!:yep: I went to enable but JSGME reports a conflict with the Bouyancy mod for GWX, could a version be done for this or could I use Pack3D to export & import to the Turm dat bouyancy files?:-?
Many thanks Flakmonkey.:D

I haven't downloaded the mod, but they shouldn't be conflicting, the buoyancy mod modifies files in the submarine folder, and Flakmonkey's mod should only modify files in the objects folder...

hmmm... certainly shouldnt conflict with anything outside the turm dats.
You will always get a message from JSGME when enabling it saying it *may* conflict with any mod that also changes the turm dats (like the raised/rotating df arial, but thats included so isnt a problem.)
I`ll upload the .objs + instructions so you can use pack3d to add them to your dats. Have to be tomorrow as im not home right now...
Sorry, problem on my part, origionally I had the stock u-boats replacing the GWX version because of the bouyancy problem, then a fix came out & I put back the GWX U-Boats with the bouyancy fix via JSGME.
Thanks & please disregard the PM I sent you FM!

I'm sure I got everything right!
I know the conning tower is more rusty now, maybe I should import the following:
conning_stuff.tga
NSS_Uboat7c_coning.tga
NSS_Uboat7c_deck.tga
NSS_Uboat7c_hull.tga
Any ideas would be appreciated!
Thanks.
I installed this Twisty-Periscope-thingy Mod then the BUOYS MOD via JSGME without any conflict
Really good job flakmonkey.
Thank you very much for this fine detail.

Kind regards and thank you for your great mods
Well I have got the GWX VIIb going ok now but the VIIC variations have now got the rotating antenna problem, I think this is a problem when trying to import using Pack3D version 2, says imported succesfully but doesn't actually do it!!!:-? I have sent another PM for further assistance!:yep:
Thanks.

Ahh how can a simple mod cause sooo many problems:cry:
Reece, it looks as if your boat has reverted to using the NSS_uboat7c_coning.tga in the dat (ie the stock one), it should be using the one in the tex/tnormal folder.
Im using the same uboat texture and have no probs (fubars VIIb if im not mistaken).
A6Intruder, sorry thats an NYGM problem, happens always with that radar:down:
Ive pulled the file untill the problems are fixed, theres no point people downloading a busted mod.
It's not busted, just that there are so many super mods that are different with mods like rotating antenna, Radar variations, open hatch mod with mods to move the periscope etc etc! that a fix for one wont fix all! One last queery via a PM (I think) & should have it sorted out.:yep: Can then assist, if you want, to mod the varying super mod files, all credit to you Flakmonkey, I love this mod!!
Thanks.

Yup, it can be fixed. If you upload your dats somewhere, i`ll add the mod to them.
I need GWX and WAC files, all the Turm7?_hd.dat.
When fixed i`ll upload the files in seperate packages for each supermod.

It may be that FlakMonkey may have too much on his plate, if you would like A6Intruder, upload the following files for WAC & I will mod them:

Turm7b_2_hd.dat
Turm7c_1_hd.dat
Turm7c_2_hd.dat
Turm7c_3_hd.dat
Turm7c_4_hd.dat

Great work! One question though... does this mod also effect the circular antenna on the bridge? I've been playing SH3 for years now and this is the first time I've ever seen it working. Now I'm wondering if it was the mod or some button I hit by accident that I didn't know about:doh:
Only the obs & attack periscope.:yep:

Hi Reece,
i have tried "your" version for WAC. On VIIb, it works well, but on VIIC with radar it does not. Ok its for GWX but the differences are not big. If someone (maybe you) could fix the radarbug it would be fine for WAC. BTW i love the DF-Loop rotating!!

Easy Bigboy,
at the moment we are not talking about releasing in WAC. At the moment we are talking about : Could we get this mod run on WAC. And as shown above it does not run on WAC. I gave FM the towers from WAC last week maybe he will release a version for WAC. This above ist only a test, so please come down.:nope:

YOU asked Reece to convert the GWX one to WAC

One piece of information for those interested: The twisted cable around teh scope tube was fitted to eliminate or at least mitigate the turbulences -and hence the vibration of the extended scope- when raised under water at persicope depth:know:

Hitman, could you tell me please if this was fitted to the typeVII only,or did the other sub types get them as well:hmm:
I can confirm 100% that Type IX and VII used it, though I have no graphical evidence of Type II using it. If no pictures are found about it, I would asume that the shorter Type II periscope did not need it.
In any case, note that it was a wartime improvement, not fitted initially in all UBoats and all persicopes....I have seen pictures of Type IX UBoats with it only in the thicker observation scope, and pictures of Type VII UBoats with it only in the attack scope. May be captain's choice? :hmm:

Help: I'm running GWX 1.03, and downloaded the GWX Version of the mod. I've tried installing this mod using JSGME, and it looks like the turm files were correctly copied into the \data\object folder. My boat is a Type VIIC. I don't see any change with this mod, i.e. no twisted cable around the scope, although I've tried using several different skins (fubar's, steeds, etc) with no change.
a) is this mod only for VIIB and VIIC/41? or...
b) do I need to do something else?
I don't know what to suggest, if it has been installed into the mods folder & enabled then it must work regardless of skin, though the skin color may change the periscope coloring, please recheck, if the dat files are going to their proper places it must work!:yep:

U-2, Type IIA, circa early 1943...

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/3726/image3sd7.gif (http://imageshack.us)
Not conclusive of the whole class of course, but evidence that at least one Type II carried them.
FYI they're called "helical rods" (or "helical wires"), and were fitted to break the water flow into general turbulance so as not to create any resonating eddies in the water (more on what an eddy is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddy_%28fluid_dynamics%29). Without them, the natural resonant frequency of the conical part of the periscope was the same as the frequency of the eddie, meaning vibration.
Note that this did not fix the vibration of the scope tube itself, just the conical part. The vibration in the scope tube was removed by adding an extending bracket which increased the tube's natural resonant frequency.
Good to see them modelled btw.

dmlavan,
This may sound stupid but are you sure you're running 1.03. I'm pretty sure I had that same problem along with the DF antenna not working and through that discussion came to find out I was running the original grey wolves and not 1.03.:damn: Since than no problem.

Nope - I am running GWX 1.03. I can get it to work fine w/ VIIB and VIIC/41, but not the plain VIIC.
Hi, I'm off air for a while so can't help, I tested on all versions of VIIC & worked, I will have a closer look probably tomorrow, I may need a copy of your files as well.:yep:
Where are you FM!!:D
@ dmlavan, I'm starting to think that you have not installed correctly or you are running a mod over the top of this one, could you go into your "SilentHunterIII\data\Objects" folder & get the time & file size details of the Turm7c_1_hd.dat file please?
It shouldn't matter what skin your using the twisty thing should still show, though the coloring may be different, otherwise upload the file & I will take a look at it, must be the one in the above folder with the problem!:yep:
I have rechecked and all 3 types of VIIC work.
Cheers.

08-21-07, 12:54 AM
Reece - appreciate the help.
Turm7c_1_hd.dat is 6763kb, modified 8/2/07 at 11:07pm. I downloaded "GWXTwistyPeriscopeThingy" a few times (on several different days) but the files all look the same in terms of size and date.
When I play a single mission w/ a VIIB, I can get the wake deflector fine. Same thing w/ a VIIC/41 in a single mission. However, even w/ the same skins loaded in campaign (both w/ a straight-stick VIIC and a VII/41) I'm getting a smooth scope.
I'm running GWX 1.03 w/ SH3Commander ver 2.7 as well.
That is so wierd, the file size & date stamp is correct, The only thing I can offer is that you disable the mod then upload the following:
Turm7c_1_hd.dat
Turm7c_2_hd.dat
Turm7c_3_hd.dat
Turm7c_4_hd.dat
I will check them out and see what can be done.:yep:

Any upload site like rapidshare or megashares should be ok, have had some problems with Rapidupload! of late.
@ MM, no wonder FM disappeared just after this!:yep:
Well this is a total mystery, I have checked dmlavans unmodded files with a file compare program and they are definitely GWX standard & the modded version also checks out, works on mine & others but not dmlavans!!:damn:
I'm open for any suggestions as to what othermods might interfere,:yep: actually I do just wonder what files are in the SilentHunterIII\data\Textures\TNormal\tex folder that are marked with "7c"? Could be some other skin causing this, though I doubt it.:-?

I'll ask the members here for their advice on this mod. I have asked permission to incorporate this mod into the WIP combat flag mod but have had no reply back from the author. He's been silent now for some time on this forum and I don't know any other way of reaching him. Would you all view it as ok to incorporate this mod into my WIP one if all credits for his mod are given and revealed as to the author of it? If not, do we just let mods 'die' if the author cannot be reached ever? :hmm:
nikbear
08-25-07, 12:13 AM
I don't think the mod should be aloud to die yet at the same time I would'nt want it incorperated in to another piece of work, perhaps some others can get in touch with FM,there must be away:hmm:
Hi Racerboy, I did PM you & I don't think FM would mind especially since he can't be reached, as long as he is given due credit.:yep: I would place a new thread with your intentions, if there is any opposition you'll soon find out, I have done this in the past as some of the older modders have left & would probably not return!
nikbear
08-25-07, 08:23 AM
Thats a good idea Reece,a thread asking other members they're opinion,I don't think there will be any opposition as I'm sure you'll give him full credit and I'm sure FM wouldn't want his fellow forum members to miss out just because he can't continue his work for them for whatever reason.Seems a shame to not have FM here to continue his work as he was a talented and creative chap, perhaps he will return to the forums some time soon:yep:;)I do think you should keep the work seperate from any other mod though just so people don't get confused as to the author and development of the work,That way FM will be given full credit, and RB will be seen as the one who developed the work further and to its natural conclusion:up:that should keep everyone happy;)
