They have left the community because of trouble with some people who take their mods without asking. These people developed modpacs und when someone had some of the original mods they will get an ctd.:nope:
I am also very very sorry about that. Their lost will punnish the whole comunity- not only the german.:x

Folks,

the days of a healthy subsim community seem to be gone: Nowadays there's ZERO support for this site - I only see rising costs.

Therefore I decided to stop any work on the site: It just makes no sense to invest 30 unpaid hours per week AND to pay all the bandwidth bills from private funds.

Leech as much as you want until the site is gone. A heartily THANK YOU goes to the 4 vistors who decided to donate 32,50 USD in 2007.:x :damn:

Slowly SH3 bloods out! No more new Mods, no site where to get it. Maybe time to play somthing else:huh:

Terrapins site isnt a great loss as has been down more times than up over the last year and is a PITA to get anything from
Sure mods will be lost but as most of the super mods contain most of the smaller worthwhile additions they arent totally lost
Plus most modders host their own mods

I can understand Rowi and co decision to a certain extent
Costs bugger all to ask permission and if its not given dont use

Stealing is when somebody knows what to steal. if u don't want your idea to be stolen don't tell it to everyone. Contact head moders by private messages or e-mail and let them know what u have in mind.

Oh largely I agree and believe in the strength of effective community
for sure. I absolutely dont endorse plagerism, on the other hand
there is a grey area I see that most dont. IMO I dont own my
freeware mod after its released its freeware and shareware and public
domain, and although I maybe miffed by plagerism
( yeah like someone would steal my stuff)
I feel theres little I can actually do about it.
to my mind its good decorum and good community responsibility
to follow mod ettiquette, but to not do it is antisocial and impolite
but not illegal.

Manners are the oil in the gears of societies they are designed to
reduce the friction where the people that form those gears mesh,
anyone who shuns or refutes good manners simply by doing so
throws sand into the works , a counter productive behaviour
at the best of times. what needs happen is a bit of disciplined
consistent and uniform ostracization. One of my chief teachers
is privateer who due to some incidents was keelhauled from
ss. now as it goes in our conversations off of ss as far as I recall
niether of us has ever protested his removal as unjust. its
part of being the community to accept the community rules
if we are compelled to break the rules we must be prepared
to accept those circumstances, its privateers verbal endorsement
of responsible community that has left me still respecting him.
he accepted his lumps when his consience compelled him to
thump somebody.

really though we are talking about two seperate social issues that
currently dominate the scene here at ss. as stated before by
me here and elsewhere after release I relinquish control of my
mods destination. so for me the other issue which has global
implications is of more import to myself.

I guess what Im saying is that if you know how wars work
its hard to disregard people deliberately trying to start one by brainwashing
the uninitiated.

like I said I love what we share here as much as subsimming itself
who among us has knows anyone within fifty miles of them that
plays,(excepting residents of swindon)
this allows us to share participate and learn with people that

The mod etiquette you're speaking of is ours, we respect the work from other people and don't plagiate it cause we're not antisocial or impolite at Subsim. But here come a lot of people who don't have the same way of thinking as we do :o (remember the X1 Software team)... So I think we'll always see people plagiating and even stealing works/ideas, at Subsim and everywhere else, cause disrespectful people will always exist, but it's not a reason to leave the community as Rowi and others did. :-?

I think it all comes down to common sense. Doesn't it?

You wouldn't ask your neighbour "can I shag your wife?", so why ask people "can I duplicate your work and repackage it as mine"? (not in so many words obviously)

Ask your neighbour can you use some of his tools for your own little project and he will no doubt say yes.

Its all a case simple good manners and common sense.:up:

Now as regards to them that are taking their balls and going home, well... its a loss but not the end of the world. And certainly not a sign of the bell tolls for thee. At the end of the day these mods are available for the benefit of the players and the subsim community so... when you take them away and give up on your modding and obstruct others from doing it, then, its tantamount to spite, the majority are made to pay for the mistakes of the few.

When modders help each other out, and the players, and everybody is friends, good things happen for the community and players. So much more can be accomplished through friendship than through force.

No not a loss totally Pen but there are some great ships come out of the Ge forums
Gerome packed up for a bit over the donot76 thing
His ship building would be sorely missed
He came back in the end to finish his Br heavy cruisers but has posted no more WIP
Rowi is always building units
Floating docks\Cam ship\Chemical freighter to name but a recent few

There is no one building units on this forum lately so in that sense it is a loss

To be honest though this is pretty much a standard evolutionary thing with modding. People get frustrated/hacked off/plagarised or just plain bored with it and they leave the community. SHIII has had some extrordinary longevity compared to the mods on some games I've seenand in time yes there will be no more mods for it.

Usually this is because something so much more interesting has come along. Somtimes it is for the wrong reasons sometimes it is just time to move on. that said as long as there are people actively playing the game and trying to improve it then mods will keep being built.

There is no point getting upset though if someone has packed up and stopped because that's their decision, same as it was to start modding in the first place.

Dont panic ! Venatore is here, I'm still a modder (crap one at that, but still a modder). I'm not as good as those Grey Wolf boys/girls and my understanding of files is to say the least....very limited, but I am staying the course.

I currenly re-upoading all my mods (please give time).

Venatore here is a great example of responsibility to the community
he makes integration mods but doesnt go astray ever because he
always saught permission to release components from the original
modders and always was careful to give them credit. Prior to
any established ettiquette rules.

Seems the " community " felt that all mods are open season and if someone add one of your units to a mod pack and it CTD then YOU as the author should give support to sort it
So they quit
