Place your .wav files into the gramaphone folder located in Sound folder.

The path in your root directory of SH4 is Data/Sound/Gramaphone

I copied & pasted the music files into the gramaphone & they do not play in the game. they are mp3 files

They need to be .wav files dude.;)

@thehiredgun

They can also be .ogg files or mp3s', however some types of mp3s' don't work , mpeg type comes to mind. Check by right-clicking and viewing properties, sounds like you may have those.

You may want to get an audio converter, lot's of free ones on the internet.

@Archie, Welcome to subsim:up:, from what I understand, .wav are probably one of the more stable formats, however I have used mp3s' as well.

I'm also having trouble with using my own music in the Gramaphone. I've converted some Glenn Miller to .wav files, but they don't play in SH4. However, they play fine with MS Media player. Likewise, I tried using MP3 files that played fine in SH3. However, they don't play on the SH4 gramaphone. Is there a fix for this?

Strange ^^^:hmm: I have only had problems with mpegs (mp3's) All other mp3's and .wavs have worked fine.

Maybe somebody else here has something to offer.

Are they in stereo mode? Perhaps they need to be in mono.

Bumping this thread... I can't hear gramophone. I have wave files in the correct Sound/gramaphone folder. Any ideas?

check that your music volume isn't turned right down. i did this myself and i couldn't hear anything from the grammerphone. mainly cause the title music is annoying.

also am i the only one who plays Classical stuff on my sub?

No, there are at least two of us. I have select parts of Holst's Planets Suite and two of Tchaikovsky's ballets (Nutcracker and Swan Lake). Soon I'll have Sleeping Beauty in there, too.:rock:

I prefer newer stuff. I leave Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden for when I'm not simming. Oh wait, that's not the kind of "Classical" you meant, was it? :D

don't get me wrong i've sank DD's to Pantera but for the soothing work as i glide through the water i like a bit of romantic in there, perhaps a dash of early classical? ahh the joy of a rossini, or a bit of strauss or mendelssohn of course some tchaikovsky and korsakov doesn't go amiss either.

I always thought destroying things to Delibe's wonderfully lyrical Flower Duet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afPfzGfZwsA) was the most amazing thing ever. :up:

Here you go. It's a video I threw together (before I quit drinking). I got a little mushy at the end with my tribute to Tchaikovsky, but other than that it's good ol SH4.:rock:

I still can't get the gramaphone to play. Could someone EMail me a confirmed 'playable' wav file/song so I can test it out. Thanks. wasaf2000@cox.net

Thanks Digital_trucker for EMailing your Tipperary song file(mp3)....it works great.

Oddly enough, but I've now discovered all my *.mp3 files/music work fine. My *.wav files/music do not.

That's quite the opposite to what I expected from reading the posts here on this forum.

So what's all the advice about using only/mostly *.wav files for the gramaphone?? Does that seems to be erroneous info???

To be honest, I've never tried using .wav files in the Gramophone folder, only mp3s. I copy over mp3s from my music folder, batch-rename them in the Gramophone folder to make sure the playing order is correct, and then I'm good to go. Heavy/power/epic metal for the battles (unless I want to go into Simulation mode, in which case I turn off music altogether), and The Gathering, Therion, Nightwish or similar bands for cruising...good stuff! :rock:

From what I've seen in the forums is that mp3s and ogg files work. What I have yet to determine is what specific file properties need to be adhered to (if any). For instance, is there a minimum/maximum bit rate? Or what about sample rate? Or resolution? I'm still looking for that info.

I have had .wav files work, to this point I have ony had problems with mpegs ( type of mp3 ).

Not sure on your other question(s) :hmm:

On a related topic, here is a thread about adding music, not grammaphone stuff, but in-game music: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=114705

@letterboy1

Hi,

.ogg files and mp3 files work fine with me, both in gramophone and radio. I process all my files (taken from OTR sources ) into MP3 format through Audacity. I've found that tracks at bitrates as low as 16bits play fine. I use a default sample rate of 44100Hz with a sample format of 16-bit. I interface MP3s in Audacity through Lame v3.96 at 16 -bit. I use such a low bitrate to keep file-size as small as possible.

For examples, please see the link below

I don't think the player built in to the Silent Hunter series is very fussy about bitrates. It's not a sophisticated beast at all - which is both good and bad.
