The Stingray was "played" by the USS Pampanito (SS-383) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Pampanito_%28SS-383%29), a still-seaworthy World War II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II)Balao-class submarine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balao_class_submarine) that is now a memorial and museum ship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_ship) in San Francisco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco).

The real USS Stingray SS-183 was indeed a Salmon class sub.

And i just knew they used that sub in Down Periscope.
