View Full Version : Engaging Docked Ships in GWX 1.03
Hello Kaleuns :)
Nice to see you all here :)
I have got a piece of question, regarding the engagements of docked ships in GWX 1.03.
So,situation is the following. There is a very nice South-Eastern sound going straight into the Scapa Flow Harbour, guarded only by one considerably careless destroyrer.
I am using this sound to get into the Scapa Flow harbour on my every patrol.
There are numerous V&W and C&D Class destroyers docked in the Scapa Flow harbour. They can be torpedoed quite easily.
Also there are sweet Modern Medium Tankers and a Troop Transport there. They are almost invulnerable,I mean it's impossible to hit them with torpedo,no matter what running depth is set and what kind of pistol detonator is turned on.All torpedoes, both Type I and Type II just bump off and not explode, despite the fact,I am launching them from correct (over 300 meters) distance.
So,I would be very grateful if anybody of you guys here at Subsim clearifyes those mystic fish failures.
Good Hunting to Everybody :)

It's probably the steep angle that is the problem.
Shoot from a 90 degree angle, 3-4 meters deep and you should get a hit.

There is an ideal zero gyro angle, while engaging,as well as various from 4 to 8 meter running depthes, and nevertheless all torpedoes just bump away from those Scapa Flow tankers and Troop Transport.
I am in September 1939.Maybe this an implemented early war torpedoe failure feature,if it's implemented in GWX of course, that is the fault?
Difficulty settings are switched to 65 percent level.
You could also try and use magnetics, allthough sinking might take 2 torps

I had the same problems. There appeared to be an iron fence in the water just around the harbour to protect the ships against people like you ;)
The solution is simple: set depth to 1 metre and the torpedoes will run right into the ships. Give it a try!

Thanks for advice, will do this.I have noticed something strange around those ships too.

Welcome aboard KapiteinP and StanT
Ever thought there could be an anti torpedo net close to the ships
:hmm:
I've noticed this during tests and it looks like a problem with sea deepness or rather lack of it. Some ships were sinking normally, others couldn't be harmed and this is not because of nets or something. Torps just disappeared... But this is a Q to some freak who does port raids ;) I stay out of them.

The angle Canovaro mentioned is not gyro angle, but the angle at which the torpedo strikes the hull og the ship.
Ideally, you want the torpedo to hit at a 90 degree angle (perpendicular to the hull)

No,the angle of the strike is not a problem in this case.I am always targeting the side of hull exactly at the angle of 90 when engaging those docked ships.
For example,C&D class destroyers anchored a bit away are quite an easy kill in the same conditions.
As for the difficulty of port raids - the Raids of Scapa Flow are quite easy in GWX if you use the South-Eastern Sound (with scuttled ships). To my opinion,Scapa Flow is foremost the easiest port to get into,in GWX.

Lol: let me guess: no more in 1.04.....

You're welcome. The "Tonnage Store" is open to everybody- no submarine nets,no minefields, parking assistance in eastern part of Scapa Flow Harbour  Working Years:1939 - 1945 :D:up:
