View Full Version : Improved Church's Observation (maybe more realistic mod)

Greetings to all!!
When Church created the new observation perescope textures i worked hard and tryed to create a redmask for it, and finaly made a mod with more or less realistic observation scope. But my potoshop skills are not so good and sooner during hardware problems i lost all my data including the unfinish mod.
But not so long ago a user with nick name dmlavan created a red mask for it, and then i decide that my time to modding is come and finally i will finish what i started :stare:.
The goal of my mod is to delete all the firing solution functions from the Observation menu in the game. I belive that the observation scope not desined for a firing porpuses, (that the reason why is called like that):shifty: .
The progress of my work you can see in the picture

Its not ready yet, but i will finish it very soon (possible tomorow).

a different idea but what if your attack periscope is not functional? I'll stick with having the solution data on the obs periscope as it can be used for that. The one drawback of the obs periscope is you don't have as good a zoom level as the attack periscope.

Maybe i`am wrong but i think if your atack periscope is not functional, you can`t do the solution (but you still can indificate ships :D ).
Just for a simple example, start the game - go to a room above command room and below watch bridge (sorry for my bad English). Now look at the structure of a atack and observation scope. I don`t think that the atack scope is mush biger for no reason. It seems logic to me :shifty:

the observation scope should be bigger to be able to let more light in and to be able to scan quicker. The attack periscope should be smaller to be less noticeable. At least that's what I understand. I don't think it has anything to do with firing solutions and all. Maybe there's someone who knows more than we do??

you're right -- the observation periscope is has a larger head, lets in more light (in the usn also known as the night scope), has a wider field of view and can tilt to look higher. the attack scope has a smaller head, narrower profile -- a smaller field of view but also less noticeable.
both scopes, afaik, had rangefinding equipment -- that and bearing (and a stopwatch) is all you need to calculate a firing solution.

Are you shure? O well i guest i was wrong affterall :dead: .

not 100% sure
i think the extra bulk is due to the fact that the attack periscope is an "all heights" system -- i.e. the eye-piece stays at 1 level regardless of the height of the periscope, unlike the observation scope.
but, you may very well be right -- stadimeter mechanics may not have been attached to obs scope. hard to find details -- unless some has a u-boat technical manual. or works for zeiss.

I found something but not everything a want to :-?
Yes the observation perescope has a ability to rangefinding. Yes the atack scope was smaller in view that the observation periscop.
But i` am not shure about the atachment of both into the targeting bearing system (i hope you understand about what i` am trying to say).
Look how the observation scope is instaled - he is moving by some kind of a wire, very strange and interesting.
Well anyway - i think i will try to find some more info about it and then i will rebild the hole thing all over again in the game.

Why delete the firing solution capabilities / in RL a damaged attack periscope meant the only alternative way to work out a firing solution had to be via the observation scope :hmm:

This is correct O scopes were used in many cases of damage
or malfunctions (not just motor failure but fogging or external
damage from collisions etc.)
both scopes I believe had bearing transmitters in all cases and
I believe that in both German and American cases both
scopes were "combat ready" but with the different properties
described above, larger heads vs. smaller heads etc.

Well i don`t know :hmm: . What you guys saying is prrety much logic but i can`t not find any info in a websites. The only disription i find is the Atack scope is for scaning and firing solution and observation scope is for scaning for aircrafts (the observation periscope has a better night view).

Hi Kaleuns,
maybe that's helpful:

I got one to translate via google but I couldnt get the second one up with a translation and thats the one on the O Scope. I'll give it a try:
The observation periscope was used for:
1. observation of sea surface and air space above the submerged sub
2. navigation and sailing
3. adjustment of the 'Vorhaltewinkel' during torpedo attack
Vorhaltewinkel (SH3 Manual):
gyro-angle – the angle at which the torpedo will need to turn in order to enter a collision course with the target.
Sorry for that English

Here's the one that caught my attention!!!

Now I've got to get to my books to research this:know:

I'm no expert, but for what i saw... when you rise the scopes in-game... the Attack Scope has the "rectangular" opening and the Obs Scope has the round opening. (viewed from the sail)
