Military parachuting is the most fun you can have with your pants on. However i hear jumping with your pants off is quite invigorating...

I've only ever made one parachute jump, and that was enough for me.

I stupidly got the idea that since I fly gliders and you have to wear a parachute when you do that, so you fit in the seat properly as it is designed to take one, I'd better learn how to use one in the correct way.

I did it with the Army, and I thought: 'this is going to be great, I'll get to jump out of the back of a C-130', which I'd managed to convince myself I could just about bring myself to do if I closed my eyes.

But what did they make me jump out of? Yup, a tethered balloon at 800 feet, off a static line. Scared the living crap out of me.

And what is all that crap about 'oh it's just like jumping off a wall when you land' Actually it's more like 'jumping off a wall that's going sideways at 20 mph when you land'.

I'm glad I know how to use a parachute, but I certainly hope that it remains a rather expensive cushion, as I never want to do that again.

I have not looked it up. But with my Zonen-School-Russian i would say it means the english "Slideshow" (Bilderfolge [weiter]) in russian (the word more or less in cyrillic letters). I mean really 'slideshow' but in 'russian'.

Thuringia was the most western reaching part of (Cold War) East Germany (GDR/DDR), [Munich lies more to the East like Erfurt (it's only a little but a fact - look on a map!] that was conquered at the end of WW2 by the Americans. - By Patton actually, who was raceing to Thuringia insted of Berlin. He had an leathal 'accicident' shortly after - and Thuringia was than sold to the Russians for West Berlin. Reason: [concipracy theory short to the point /on] Thuringia was the "Area 51" of the Reich!!! [concipracy theory... /off] During the Cold War - it was the gate to Fulda Gap from the East - owned by the Warsaw Pact!

It's the 'Wizard of OZ'.
There is an 'eastern block' version of the book by Alexander Wolkow . It was the very first book I have read for my own. In the east it was not just one book - but a whole series. The first book was more or less like the american 'Wizard of OZ' of Lyman Frank Baum and had the title 'The wizard of the emerald city'. It was very popular in the GDR. Maybe like Harry Potter today...

Re Thüringen, the state is quite interesting, even though I'm totally against state patriotism, I'm german and nothing else. States have too much power in Germany and they would best be reduced to pure administrative purposes in my opinion.
The Wartburg, Eisenach, Weimar, a bunch of other nice cities as Erfurt.
Plus the whole WW2 Area 51 crap like Mittelbau-Dora, the giant underground V2 factory.
Btw, the "drei Gleichen" Area is where according to one book Germany tested a nuclear bomb in 45.
"Drei Gleichen" (wordplay, "three equals, but one of the castles is named Gleichen) area a group of three medieval castles aligned in a triangle over a large area, each sitting on a lone hill. Looks quite mysterious.

Ok, I suppose the castle density in the southern half of Germany is higher than anywhere else in the world, except maybe Scotland. Look up www.burgtour.de (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/www.burgtour.de) for a very incomplete and regionally biased list of castles, ruins and remains.
For my first years, I spent every vacation with my grandparents climbing up and down Windeck Castle in Weinheim/Bergstrasse.
Today, I know Windeck is nothing special at all, but in my youth this ruin was every story of Knights and heroism and so. I suppose today's parents would get hysterical when their children would climb the same walls and go down the same dungeons I did, even though it was only around 1985. :)
But the drei Gleichen is simply a magnificent sight, even from the Autobahn.
First time I saw them it was enroute to Berlin, on a sunny January morning with snow.

But that with the Auobahn (A4) and the Drei Gleichen is right. It's really a fantastic sight. Even at night because the castles are lightet with floodlights. Even better is to drive the A71 between Suhl and Arnstadt through the Turingian Forest. (Thüringer Waldautobahn) There are 5 or 6 Tunnels, one the 'Rennsteigtunnel' is the longest in Germany. And between the tunnels are huge bridges over whole valleys - would be something for games like 'Need of Speed'.

That's one of my favorites, castle Eltz.
Never destroyed, never even surrendered, still in possesion of the very family that build it. A so called "Ganerbenburg", which means that it is serveral castles in one, with all branches of the family living in the same castle.
Eltz is in Rheinland-Pfalz near the Mosel river, upriver from Koblenz, I think. Has been a while since I was there.
There's the ruins of a smaller fortress on the other side of the valley called "trutz dem Eltz" which was build when the castle was besieged in the middle ages..
