View Full Version : Improved Church's Observation Scope
dmlavan

After a lot of trial and error, I have made a redmask (night filter) for Church's excellent Observation scope.
http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/2097/daync4.th.jpg
http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/8898/nightzi6.th.jpg
This mod replaces the observation scope - which appears identical to the attack scope - with Church's variant, and includes a redmask/night filter that is shaped to the periscope sight.
Note that this mod is NOT JSGME-enabled but must be manually added.

Well well, this looks way cool
I admit I don't use the O scope much, but this might slab a reason to.
Question is this mod cross universal for all the subs or just one type?
dmlavan, could you fix those screen links so we could get a closer view?
Thanx.
Question is this mod cross universal for all the subs or just one type?
Must be universal as the files in ...\data\menu\gui are universal. Otherwise it would have been in one of those NSS* folders where the textures are stored for each type seperately.
dmlavan, could you fix those screen links so we could get a closer view?
Thanx.
That would be nice :). So we could take a closer look without starting SH. No time for this right now.

Yes - this Observation scope is universal for all the boats. Thanks for the kudus - it took a lot of trial-and-error, but I only got this figured out with a lot of help from some great modders. And, of course, Church who did the original scope! His mod is the only reason I ever used the observation scope.

BTW, maybe someone could answer this for me?
When we goto the Peri or Obs station ingame, what are we seeing?
Do we see a representation of the eye piece lens or the external lens?

:hmm:
This should be the external lens you see. The shape fits better and it would be more realistics anyways. Because if you press your head agains the peri's headpiece you don't see any shapes of the lenses directly in front of your eyes anymore.
The same when looking through binoculars.
At least this sounds logic to me :).

I guess the stock obs scope was wrong?
As the obs scope's purpose was to scan the horizon for aircraft it would be more logical the way the modded obs scope looks because the wider vertical angle lets you do this better.
WilhelmSchulz.

But wouldnt the glass be 90 deg to what this mod has? And has anyone seen what it looks like through a U-Boat obs(ie pic of personaly)?

I haven't seen any photographs of the look through an observation periscope yet. But the angle should be right as this is the same shape as the 3D model of the obs scope looks from the outside in SH3.

Realy? :-?

Those shape one looks at the above screenshots is not the shape of the ob scope's head in SH3 but the shape of the lens at it's front.
At least I'm pretty sure about that but I will check it in a few minutes. Wanted to play a while anyways :)
Hm, it seems to be exactly the other way around than I thought.
Here are two screenshots:
The attack peri:

CapZap Yes. You just need to make 2 little adjustments in the menu_1024_768.ini and copy 2 additional tga files into the ...data\menu\gui folder. There should be no interference with any other (super)mod which doesnt try to edit the peri screen also ;). It's all in the readme .

Regarding the shape of the "lens" - I spent a lot of time looking for old photos of the exterior of the lens of the sky periscope. Everything I found showed it was a vertical ellipse/oval. Although I guess to be honest, since the eyepiece was round, your view should be round and the advantage is that as you twist the handles you're changing the angle of the bottom mirror inside the scope, and therefore changing which part of the "oval" you're looking out of. However... I like this shape ;)

I believe so. If not it is a simple thing to rename it to be compliant.
Regarding the shape... you are correct. However, as opposed to the standard game, the new shape will at least make it immediately and obviously different when using the obs scope.

Well, to be honest, I always thought of that as being smudges on the interior of the lens... or oil from all those burning tankers lol.
I think yes... adding just a bit... in an inconspicuous place or two may look good. (as long as it doesn't interfere with the player use of the scope.)

Well, concerning the large dials mod... we came to a tough decision. Although they are very cool... they also create an alien environment that can be difficult for new AND old users to adapt to in game.
I believe that a primary cause of the success of GWX has been that it remains easy to understand in regards to mechanical operations in SH3... It remains intuitive. The environment may change... but the player interface remains simple.
Concerning the adaptation of the Bordinstrument tga to Church's Obeservation scope mod... Something isn't right... still transparent in the wrong places. (Have left my cursor on one of the spaces that need filled.
Double checcking the code changes now.

Sounds like a good idea. The purpose of the observation scope was to scan quickly... for that reason it has a lower mag and wider FOV... however, the transparent round field remaining, will need to be filled in.
I double checked the code... twice. It is entered correctly.
Gonna have to wait on further changes at this end for now though... gotta sleep.
Will upload what I have for you first, in the proper jgsme file structure for GWX/SH3. (It contains two 1024 menu ini files... one for default GWX and one for the optional GWX Integrated Orders mod.)

And what about the outer shapes of the periscope's lenses in the 3D view ?
I mean the attack periscope has the exact same shape from outside as this new obs scope view and the 3D obs scope has a lens shaped like the current attack scope view (I mean the view at the F3 station).
Is something wrong with the 3D models of the scopes ?

(Weekends are tough for me to do much.) I have no doubt that we'll get it working as long as we can all be a bit patient with limitations.

kpt., the best thing to do from a GWX perspective is modify the menu_1024_768.ini file for GWX 1.04 to automatically use different names for the TGA's for the attack and observation persicopes. With already instituted the end user can just change the TGA's to suit whatever he/she wants for those views. Example:
the periscope.tga is the default for both now but if we modify the menu_1024_768 to look for an attack_periscope.tga and an observation_periscope.tga then this would make life easier for all. Everyone would be free to choose what they wanted for each.

Sounds good to me... as long as the textures remain at the caliber that Oakgroove has given us, and as long as the code changes are logged in the end to allow for experienced modders to adjust their own personal installations if they wish.
Just a question: IIRC Ducimus already made this half a year ago or am I wrong?:hmm:

LOL, I've fixed it too. While driving to the bank... I realized that you may have DL'd the files I put up from yesterday and not the ones that I posted today. (miscommunication born of the internet... no biggy)
The only thing I haven't done yet is to reposition the mag indicator.

right on!
try these values for the mag level first and see how you like them:
- for observation periscope (this moves the zoom level to centered right above the heading bar):
[G2B I132]
Name=Zoom

ItemID=0x2B060009

Color=0x66B26680

TextFlags=0x4
- for attack periscope (this moves the zoom level to centered right above the the heading bar):
[G26 I132]

This looks cool...but all the pics I've seen are of the round sight like the one already in SHIII. I'm confused, is this historically correct or just something fancy? If it is and the one in SHIII is wrong then this will be awesome. Is it possible to create another scope for the obs scope? Or are the AS and the OS the same thing when it comes to sharing files etc.

Look at page 1 of this thread. It's still irritating to me too that the AS has the outer shape of the modded OS and vice versa.

Well honestly I think that since you are looking through a Circular Eyepeice you should see a circular shadow.
But on the other hand I have actuly looked through a Periscope(admitly not a german one) and if you keep the other eye closed the vew of the lens takes up almost all of your sight execpt for a bit of a shadow around the edges. So if you want to be historcly corect and make a greater submarine simulation this should be implamented. :yep: I dont know how but its just my 2 cents. :|\\

Well...if GWX already has the left hand slide out for subs fuel, bat, co2 and compress o2.
Why not have the right side for the torpedos? And have the AS and OS be more like the ones in SH4 (which actually take up the whole screen.) And yes the slide out bit is borrowed from SH4, but there isn't a tab for it. you line up your shot. You move your mouse over to the right, set up the firing solution. select a tube and fire.
And watch the ship go up infront of your eyes.

Decided to take a stab at this Mod and it works ok.
I get the rounded shadow with the solid white edges just like Kpt. Lehmann posted in post #74 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=599663&postcount=74). The white edges kinda kills the it imo, but for something different I still like the idea of this Mod.
Btw: the documentation refers to Churches Observation scope not the newobservationscope included in the d/l.

Just my 2 cents guys. Since the new rectangular view is supposed to represent the shape of the external lens (which imho is correct and accurate), then the ZEISS logo should be removed.

er so is everyone happy with this new mod. Can we non-modders go ahead and start d/ling and installing cause this one certainly deserves to be an official add-on. We now have a reason for using the obs peri. Is the link on the first page still valid? There seems to have been some trouble with it previously.

Currently the menu_1024_768.ini file uses the same TGAs for both scopes. This will lay down the foundation in the menu_1024_768.ini file so that you can use seperate TGAs for the scopes. Here's the one I made with wider FOV based on new style background:
http://rapidshare.com/files/46542568/Racerboys_Obs_Scope_Wider_FOV.zip.html
I took Church's new scope 'style' and added it to the new instrument background from the what-ever-it-was instrument mod. I then cut out the inside portion of the view finder (the part that's fuzzy around the view) so that annoying bit is gone. I also had to move the Zeis logo to a new position. I then had to edit alpha channel for the new wider FOV made. Here's the TGA file picture:

When I try to activate this mod with JSGME, I get the warning '"menu_1024_768.ini" has already been altered by the "GWX - Integrated Orders" mod.'. Will this cause a problem. I deactivate then re-activate the 'integrated orders' mod to make sure the instalation is made in the right order but the warning still appears. I am trying to activate the version for use with GWX 1.03/Integrated orders.

Look I made it Generic Mod enabled possible. I did the corrections so its easy for everybody and added 2 pics to prove it works. If the creator wants it I can email it to him so he can repost it here as soon as he PM's me. Unless I missed something?:hmm:

Now if sometime did this faster than I oops my bad.:damn: I didn't read all the post.:88)
This is for Stock 1.4b. I'm not using any megamod yet.
I'm sorry to arrivel late to this topic  I have been reading from the beginning and there was a question left unaswered where I think I can help.
Apparently the shape of the periscope field of view has been done following the pattern of the external look of the lense. Thus it is squared.
Well, the external pattern is squared to allow prism tilting (Looking up and down) due to the bigger size of the scope head, where the lenses are located. The look through the eyepiece still shows a circular field of view, like the Attack scope, not a squared one.
Hope that helps :hmm:
Here is a picture of a real manual from a WW2 german observation scope, showing the reticle displayed in the field of view, and how this last one looks like:
http://aycu02.webshots.com/image/29041/2006073857023651716_rs.jpg
P.S. the manual states that the zoom is 1.5x and 6x, not 1x and 4x !
That's great info Hitman! :) I'm I the only one that thinks that Church's Observation scope should be the attack scope? With Hitman's recent info, I feel that Church's scope should be for the attack scope and observation scope should look like Hitman's picture. What do you think?

I think your right.:hmm: It makes sense.:yep:
Sorry guys, the attack scope had also the same rounded field of view. Again, the squared upper part of the scope head was to allow prism tilting. See it here, in this technical drawing of the attack scope head:
http://aycu08.webshots.com/image/29367/2002984642240517260_rs.jpg
You can clearly notice that there is a diagonal mirror sending down the tube the light rays that enter the ocular. Tilting that mirror you could elevate/depress the view, and for it to have a clear view all around the form of the external protecting glass window had to be squared.
Sorry guys, the attack scope had also the same rounded field of view.
Thanks for clearing that up Hitman. I was going by the exterior pictures of the periscopes themselves.

I too said on a different thread that since the eyepiece is round the view would be round, no matter what the shape of the head. Same with the binoculars, though you see that view in movies so much that the real view looks wrong.:rotfl:
P.S. the manual states that the zoom is 1.5x and 6x, not 1x and 4x !
What does the manual say about the Attack 'Scope zoom? Are they the same?

Yes, AFAIK the zooms used in the KM where 1.5x and 6x always. The reason for choosing 1.5x as low power instead another is that after some experimenting they found out that ships looked that way almost identical size to the eye than when being seen through naked eye from the bridge. I.e. the zoom was chosen to keep the view as similar as possible to the real thing and thus allow a better awareness of the situation to the commander :yep:

According to the information you gave, i think the stock look of observation scope is not correct eather :-?.
