View Full Version : Anyone try ST Radar?

Just curious if anyone has tried to enable the ST radar on the observation periscope? I've been meaning to see if it's functional for a couple of weeks, but I kept getting sidetracked and now I'm afraid I don't have much to play, let alone poke around in the files.

Be curious to know if it works.

What kind of radar is ST, and why would a radar be on the observation periscope?

I just started a new career (1941, Pearl) in a Tambor and picked up an "SD Radar" in the base, but I can't get it to turn on. All my radar screens are blank. Makes me very sad.

Well, firstly, the early radar you pick up, from what I gather, can not be manned or turned on or off. You will simply notice it detecting aircraft. At least someone said that, don't remember who.

And regarding the ST radar, it would be useful on your periscope because you could use it while submerged at periscope depth without having the risks associated with being fully surfaced and vulnerable.

SD interface isn't implemented. You're crewmen simply give you a report when an aircraft is picked up.

Why wouldn't you want a radar on a periscope? Very accurate ranging, even in heavy seas while staying submerged.

Yes, I enabled the ST radar a few months ago in v1.2 for kicks and grins, but it doesn't work as we would think it should.

In the boats UPC file, simply swapping the observation periscope head with the ObservationST periscope head turned the radar "on" if you had an SD only equiped boat. When you jumped to the Observation periscope view it rotated around and around until you turned the sweep off. Also, the bearing displayed in the view ended up being askew.

To prevent the periscope from rotating and causing bearing problems you can simply go into the Sensors_US_sub.sim file and change the 8th sensor (sometimes called the SS or SV radar in some tweak files) revolving value to 0.

Using the bracket keys [ ] while in the periscope view rotated the antenna manually so you can point it at a ship ... unfortunately there is no command to ask for a range on that target. In the game , they appeared to have it available in late 45 but I've never played a game that late.

I played around with it when I was trying to build an SD antenna that could be raised and lowered like the periscope. I made an SD only equiped boat capable of turning on the radar and displaying targets and aircraft and lowering it to turn it off. It was just an experiment and I never got any further with it.

I haven't checked in v1.3 if they changed it at all.

If there's to be a 1.4 patch, getting ST radar enabled is one of the top priorities for me.

Well, I tried to enable it just by enabling it as an upgrade with "AdvAirRadars" instead of the non-existant slot "AdvPeriscope" and changing it so it would replace the SJ radar and linked in the elements but that doesn't work sadly, I got the "Your submarine can't use this upgrade pack!" message. :( It does have a different entry graphically for the ST periscope but no idea if that file exists, I looked but couldn't find it.
