View Full Version : [REQ] External camera and the cascading water effect.

Does anybody know how to remove the water effect from the external camera when the camera goes underwater and then surfaces? It kind of gets old when you looking at ships at water level in the middle of a storm and the waves constantly submerge the external camera then you have to wait for the water to finish cascading off the camera. Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome:up: sevn_up

This has been talked about in the past, don't think anything was done as far as a mod though, not sure if it is possible:hmm:

As far as the effect itself, some like it, some don't. I personally like it.

But it is all personal choice right:D Perhaps somebody else can shed some light on this.

Good Hunting:up:

what external camera exactly?
free cam / deckgun / periscope / conning tower ?

He is talking about the periscope view I believe. The water cascading off it ( lens ) when raising it, same effect in a storm as well.

I think its the lens distortion (water refraction) or?

Is it possible to mod, I remember a thread\question awhile back about this, but have not noticed discussion since. As mentioned I like the existing effect, but again that is me.

you mean the blurred effect when a wave passes above it?

Me to, reminds me of the Destroyer encounter in Das Boot :yep:

Lad here that started the thread was wanting to know if it could be modded.

Yes, I like it too.

Have a look at these parameters in the "Periscope" category inside cameras.dat

CameraEffects DropsDuration=4
CameraEffects BlurDuration=3
CameraEffects Radius=0.03

They look promising.

Thanks guys. I was referring to the free roaming external camera. Thanks KV29 for the filename. I will check that out.

CameraEffects DropsDuration=4
CameraEffects BlurDuration=3
CameraEffects Radius=0.03
but as i said brief, but so far no luck :(

This may be a stupid question but when I look at the cameras.dat file, it shows encrypted data. Why is this? Is there some certain program or application that I should use to edit these entries.

Yeah - you need to be using the great minitweaker program for changing these files - see tutorial here for explanation and where to find the program and the tweak files:

Good luck!

bump!

I also don't like the water effect in the external camera..

I think this might have something to do with
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Misc
"WaterDroplets"
Try to do the same as with the Umark, basically render it transparent.

Have not tried yet, but worth a go.

IGNORE! just tried, no go :p

This is still not perfect and might have other effects that I did not have time to check (off to work here)
You will have less distortion but there is still some left. I think the answer might still be in that "Misc" folder...

JSGME READY WATER DISTORTION "BETA" ;)

Hi Captain Cox !
I tried a different way to disable this waterdrop effect, though it looks quite the same in the end. I edited some values in the waterdrops shader file so it is less visible, but unfortunately it disables the effect for all camera views (freecamera, periscope, tower ...). It would be better to have effects enabled for the periscope and disabled for all other views.
I uploaded it, if you like to try it out. -->http://www.speedyshare.com/764571346.html

the file you are looking for is the: data/misc/turbulence.dds

it controls water distortions above and underwater. it effects lenses on both scopes as well as your view emerging from underwater with the free cam. it also has underwater distortion effects on light reflections and visability.

to get rid of the distortions delete the "turbulence.dds" file, thats it. game runs fine and no distortions.

FYI - the underwater floating plankton is found in the data/misc/impurity.dds file
just in case someone wants to lighten up on the floating plankton effect.
to totally remove the plankton just delete "impurity.dds" for clean water.

Is there a way to keep the distortion effects on the scopes but remove it from the external camera?

Is there anyway someone can make this mod file? I have tried numerous times to make this mod file so that there is no distortion when the external camera goes above the water. Also can I also get a file that will allow me to "clip" so that I can get as close to the deck of ships as possible. Any help would be much appreciated.

That would be perfect. Lets hope someone nuts this out, I would use this mod for sure.

I discovered that the cascading water effect has to deal with the caustics files in the Data\Misc folder. I did delete the file but if you look at your sub underwater, it looks like there is double vision. Also there is still one file affecting the water effect. Maybe this can give someone a lead on where to start modding.

You guys should check out Kriller2's new "Krillers visual upgrade 1" he gave this stuff a complete overhaul.

The file you should be looking at is called...waterair.dds...found in Data/Misc.

This is the file that controls the cascading water effects on the cameras and periscope views as you come up from the WATER.. to the AIR. Hence, the name!... I believe if you delete this file the effects go too. This is the file that Kriller2 modified for his visual upgrade 1 to get a different cascading effect.

Cheers!

No its the "underwater_displacement_map.dds" which controls the effect , you can download it here for a better effect:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=120036 if you only need the lens effect just donwload the patch ;)

Here is a screenshot of it in action:

Unfortunately, deleting that underwater displacement file causes the double vision underwater like i was talking about. Also the external camera still does the water effect just not as bad. Does anybody know where a clipping mod is as well.
