Just saw a television commercial for a special showing of Das Boot:the Director's Cut
I missed the timeframe, but it'll be on the evening of June 30th on AMC (American Movie Classics)

Uncanny....I spent yesterday ripping Das Boot: Directors Cut onto my Creative Vision:M...now i can watch it when confined to my tent. Whats more, the new solar panel charger I picked up will allow me to charge it up via a cigarette lighter attachment.
I'm now officially happy....and maybe a bit sad too.

I couldn't care less. No, that's not meant to be an insult either to you or the movie. It's just that I've owned the original theatrical version on VHS for ten years, the Director's Cut on VHS for at least 8 years, the Director's cut on DVD for at least 5 years (except I gave that one to a needy fellow simmer when I bought...) and the Original, Uncut 5-hour version for about 3 years. Until I became homeless I watched that one at least once a month.
So, thanks for the heads-up about it being on TV, but WHY DON'T YOU BUY THE LONG VERSION? :rotfl:

I chanced to find and bought a copy of the director's cut yesterday at the supermarket for $9 (enhanced, remastered). I grabbed it to replace my old VHS of the Das Boot. The original theatrical release has the tightest editing, and the most impact for me. The longer versions drift a bit.

But the longest (5-hour) version follows the book much more closely.

Either way you view it Sailor Steve and 8X15, It's a great all time classic and IMO the all around best sub movie made............

It's all in sub-titles isn't it? :(
I hate reading movies.

Nope, with the DVD you can watch it dubbed in English or as the majority prefer, in German with English subtitles, the choice is yours.

You just HAVE to watch it in German with English sub titles...there's just no other way. I'd also suggest doing the same with the german Stalingrad movie....which is also top class stuff!

What identifies the 5 hour version from the others? There seems to be at least 3 versions available on Amazon, but none say anything about a 5 hour length (?)

From Amazon.ca, you will see the reference to the "un-cut" version.

A very interesting experience is to watch it in dubbed english, then watch it again with the subtitles.
Its almost like a different movie. The 'point of view' and phrases used are an interesting insight on the culture of that day (60's) [meaning when the movie was made not WWII].

I actually once watched it in dubbed English, with the subtitles on. That's a real experience. You're right, it is almost two different movies.

Agreed, I tried it in english once and it just wasn't as immersive. :smug:

OMG!! Awesome! Rented it from Netflix a month ago and it has quickly become my favorite sub movie of all time! Going to record it on my DirectTV DVR.
I really love the theme song. Listening to it as I type.
I wonder what Das Boot would be like if the external U-Boat scenes are recreated with todays advance special effects.... :hmm:

The 'at sea' shots might look more realistic if the correct foam was CGIed in; the water is obviously not to scale.
My biggest complaint is the underwater footage; I think the movie would have been better without external scenes of depth charges exploding, torpedoes hitting ships, destroyers roaring overhead and the sub hitting the bottom. I would have preferred to see the crew reacting to things they couldn't see.

On a related note, I bought an HD-DVD player for my XBOX360 for $200 and have been enjoying it (as much as it can be enjoyed given the crappy selection of movies), and then I noticed that U-571 is available on HD-DVD. Makes the purchase worth it right there, I plan to order it POSTHASTE.

Do yourself a favor:
1. Buy one of these:
http://www.gizmoandwidget.com/images/medium/submarine_MED.jpg
2. Put it in the bathtub with you.
3. Fart in the bathtub and pretend it's "depth charges"
4. Wave an American flag and shout "HOORAY! WE WON THE WAR!"
There. You have just topped the movie U-571 in terms of historical accuracy.
Nobody is arguing the fact that it's nowhere near historically accurate.
That doesn't stop it from being an enjoyable movie.

No, the fact that most of the events in the movie are so impossible as to be ridiculous (5 or 6 American sailors piloting a German sub that they've never seen before...suuuure) are what stop it from being an enjoyable movie.

I think a modern Los Angeles class attack sub go around 1200 feet ? Thats "not much more for the time between this boats...."

I'm not really interested in starting a flame war. If the guy finds the movie enjoyable, there's nothing wrong with that. No need to start harping on him about historical accuracy.

You do know what this website is all about don't you? A bunch of cranky rivet counters, bubbleheads and grognards.
What I meant was, there is a time and place to harp about historical accuracy (New Topic: omg U-571 sux), but I think using that poor fellow's post as a springboard to launch a huge hate-fest about the historical accuracy of the movie is unnecessary.
Perhaps there ought to be a stickied U-571 hate thread, where rivet-counters can go to vent.
The farting for depth charges thing was funny, though. :D

Can I harp about the cardboard acting and hamburger-for-brains storyline? Is it really necessary to continue with this? If you feel that strongly about it, make a new thread instead of derailing this one.

Well, considering that the title of the thread is 'Das Boot', I think it got derailed as soon as *that other movie* was mentioned.
On the other hand, I agree; teasing is fun, but can be carried too far.
