After long searching through the forum I located a post giving a link to a 350+ "unofficial manual" for SH 4 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/search.php?searchid=165824).

The manual is written in ... German!

But that's no problem. Here's what I've done:

Downloaded the manual from:

http://sh4.wamotec.de/phpBB2/downloads.php?cat=3

Note: to the left of the final download button you'll see a code you must type into a little box (it prevents bot downloads).

Then, run the manual with Adobe Acrobat 7.0 (NOT just the Reader). Select the cursor tool rather than the hand, so you can highlight text.

Then, highlight a paragraph at a time from the text in the manual, Control+C to copy, then go here:

http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr

And paste (Control+V) the German text into the window. Select "German to English" and bingo! a very good translation appears in English, quite easy to understand.

The manual has excellent screenshots demonstrating each step of the process. My compliments to the authors! :D

AN INVALUABLE TOOL!

Administrators: perhaps you'd make this a sticky?

cheers

What? You posted this and didn't bother to go through and translate/post an english version? Just Kidding, this looks promising. No but really...someone? Anyone got time to translate 349 pages for me?

Let's see a few reviews of it and, if they are postive, we will link this thread to a sticky. Bablefish can be, ummmmm... challenging.

Take your time look forward to reading it in six months to a year. :p

Just pulling your leg, good luck.

"Bablefish can be, ummmmm... challenging."

It works well for a word or a simple sentence, but I fear it is paragraph impaired.

I can read German well enough to make out what is being said, but translating is another matter. Anyone got a Russian version? That I could do: очень horror-show, as they say. :arrgh!:

we are very proud of our user guide, so have a look here:

http://forums-de.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9001092274/m/6061084955

there are over 100 reviews and they're all positiv to enthusiastic - same at other German SH4 - websites.

We will publish a version 2 in combination with a complete new campaign, new training missions and some mods. But we will not publish it until patch 1.3 is ready.

So - if someone will translate in english: please wait for our version 2!

best regards
Minimax

I fear you misunderstood me.

What I was refering to a "review" was would a version, translated using Bablefish, be pracitcal for English speaking players. Otherwise there would be no point in linking it in the FAQ thread, if no one can understand it.

sorry for misunderstanding you!

Bubblefish is, is... let's say not the best way ... ;)
I don't think, that anybody can work with a translation made by bubblefish.

Only a translation by an english and german speaking human would be useable!

Even then the conversion from metric to imperial will lead to innaccuracies.... oh wait... never mind.

No one has started a wiki for SH4 ? there was a pretty good one for SH3.

Mark Twain would have loved it. Here is a direct quote from a speech of his: "Since long, my gentlemen, have I the passionate longing nursed a speech on German to hold, but one has me not permitted."

I think it deserves a link. There are quite a few of us who speak German pretty well so we can translate it in parts until there's a complete English version.

I have had no problem understanding any of the paragraphs translated by the conversion link I gave. Of course it takes some creative thinking, but the manual has been excellent!

about the guide, is there any way to make it so that it's not read only... because adobe acrobat isn't letting me edit the file and I'm trying to make a half decent translation.

note : (I'm not sure if this is correct seeing as I change all measurements of "kns" to "kts" and all "nm" to "km") please correct me and help make this guide as accurate as possible)

How to Intercept a Convoy
translation by Musician (no I don't know why the images are weird sizes, ill fix it in the morning)

Step 1: Intercepting the Course of an Announced Convoy

The convoy in the picture below was announced at around 21:00. Its speed is marked as medium so I estimate that it will be moving at about 9kts.

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/5295/image1xj1.png

Upper Text: (The Convoy)
Lower Text: (My Submarine)

Now I want to look where the convoy will be in a certain amount of time so I take the compass and draw a circle about 9nm wide (I’m not sure how big nm are but I’m hoping it translates to km). although the detailed information I get while mousing over the announced convoy says that it heading south, the map seems to have it pointing a little bit southeast.

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/9409/image2oz3.png
(Assumed Position of the convoy in 10 hrs if it is traveling a 9kts)

Now I want to see where I can be within ten hours with reasonable diesel consumption

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/4234/image3am5.png
(moving at 11kts I will be approximately here in ten hours)

This set up looks reasonable supposing the convoy maintains its course and speed. (There however at the moment nothing speaks approximately, finally drives it simply over the open sea.)

Since I am unable to intercept the convoy within 10 hours I will revise my circle to show where the ship will be in 12 hours (12 * 9 = 108 nm), now naturally I want to know which speed and course to set in order to make contact with the convoy in 12 hours, so I will draw a line from my u-boats current position to the assumed position of the convoy at around 09:00 tomorrow morning.

http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/4475/lastimagejo7.png
Upper Text: (The position of the convoy after 12 hours at 9 kts)
Lower Text: (My distance from the convoy is 137 nm and my course is 68 degrees to travel that distance in 12 hours my speed must be 11.5 kts)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

anyways thats about as much as I translated tonight. hopefully my assumptions that nm = km and the kns = kts were correct. if not let me know. I'm not planning on translating the whole guide, but I am going to translate the more useful section of the guide like the one above.

edit: sorry apparently nm is an imperial measurement for nautical miles, and it is not equivilent to km. it's been fixed

Great job Musician! :sunny:

You can't edit the Adobe file because you're probably viewing it in Acrobat Reader. You need the actuall full version of Adobe Acrobat. I am running v 7.0. There is an icon on the toolbar a few options to the right of the hand that turns the cursor from a hand to your normal cursor. You can then copy and paste (but you can't delete or move).

Cheers
