As Promised: I am posting an official update on GWX version 1.04 development.
:)
We are taking a serious approach concerning the lack of AI submarine activity in SH3. We began to address this issue in GWX version 1.0... and the trend will run its course with GWX version 1.04.
In GWX version 1.04, you can expect to see the following AI subs. :arrgh!:

These things are the tip of the iceberg as far as content is concerned. A great deal of stuff has been completed... or is currently in various stages of production. It is still too early to speak of release dates... but I assure you that the diesels producing GWX v1.04 are running as fast as they can be safely pushed.
I also would like to take the opportunity to address a bit of rumor control. :wink:
GWX version 1.04 will be our final update for GWX/SH3. The only things that may follow are critical corrective updates... (God, I hope we don't need to do that... but we are certainly not perfect people. :oops: ) ... and hopefully the eventual consolidation of GWX into a single mod package.
Unfortunately, there will be no "GWX version 1.05." It is important that we choose a logical end-point to our little adventure... and to release GWX Dev Team members from heavy work and obligations. Apart from the challenges of modding SH3, building GW and GWX has been very tough in real-life terms. It has generated very real stress... and at times, has tested friendships. Some sacrifices are just unreasonable.
We choose to end our story on a high note.
I assure you though, that the decision to lay down our tools... is a very difficult one. Words do not come easily. We have poured our hearts and souls into this work... and have developed a closeness with the history of the Battle of the Atlantic... and the battles our families fought... not so long ago. We've been able to touch that history in a way that would not otherwise be possible without this project.
SH3 will certainly continue to keep some of its "quirks" but hopefully, we have made the journey worth the trouble for new and old users.
To all those who have supported us in word and deed for so long... Thank You!!!

Excellent work. But soviet submarine need reworked. For example - sich conning tower was before WWII, but all boats SHCH class during WWII have standart conning towers only. And more. Submarine was have 2 45mm guns. In screenshot I saw 1 20mm Oerlicon in fore position only. 45mm guns have in Liliput library in link:

Sounds great, Kpt. Those subs look fantastic! You mentioned that we would encounter both surfaced and submerged subs. They won't be able to dive, will they? IIRC, that's a stock SH3 problem that can't be fixed.

many thanks for all effort you have put into this great sim:rock: . I have played this sim many many times with all major and minor mods from the very begining of the SHIII releas. GWX is the corona:sunny: :sunny: :sunny: . I'm sure there will be more new mods based on GWX 1.04. However, I think the great GWX will always be the basement of these future mods. This is the real British S-class, the RN had 66 of these boats as opposed to only 5 of the lend lease S-1 (currently in in GWX 1.03)

You guys have taken not just SH3 but naval sims in general to a new stage :up: During many years it has been said that AOTD was the mirror in which any sub simulation should look to test his quality, but GWX has set a new reference, for sure.
I just hope that if UBI decides to do a german U-Boots SH5, gets in contact with you guys to do the job. The loss of the experience you have gained in the process without applying it from inside (Dev Team with SDK) would be a shame for the naval simulations world.
We should open a petition to UBI thread to ask for a SH3 disk with expansion/update that adds the whole GWX contents, fixes some bugs and adds submarine AI. Would be more of a best seller than Harry Potter :|\\

Rather often these days, things come across my desk that make my hands shake... Things that I thought would be impossible in SH3/GWX.
The guys on the GWX dev team absolutely stun me at times... and I am absolutely, positively proud of them all. I feel each of them could likely do what they do for a living, but for some reason, they are doing what they do for GWX. This is a really big part of why I feel so fiercely protective of them and their work.
I wish I could pay them all real money... and give them Knight's Crosses for putting up with me. The farther we go, the better it is I think, that I simply try to keep from being underfoot.
It is really an honor to be associated with the guys on the dev team. Please thank them... not me. My usefulness to the project is quite limited in comparison. The skill-sets, personal standards of excellence, and work ethic that each of them bring to the table is the real force behind the avalanche... and I am speaking of members past and present.
Gentlemen of the GWX dev team, my hat is off to you. It is easy enough to have big ideas... but it is an entirely different matter to make them come to life... inspite of hell or high water. You guys are truly awesome.

Well put, mate. The work done by the team is just plain über super hyper 100% awesome. Talk about testing the SHIII engine's boundaries. :p
Also, a very big thank you will go to the beta testers. It isnt easy to test something as big as GWX has become. With thousands and thousands lines of code changed during the journey. :up:

Those new submarine models look quite detailed. What were the British thinking with all of that junk sticking up from their T-class sub? :confused: It doesn't look very streamlined. You'd think all those wires and antennas would be always getting caught on seawedd and sub-nets, etc. :p

I cant believe that you guys have done all this as volunteers....not gettin' paid at all...You have made a completly new subsim, based on SHIII.. Words becomes so small when it comes to show our appreciation for all the work you guys have done for this community... The only thing i have to complain about, is UBI's lack of interest in your work... They should, as stated previously, have contacted you and tried to cooperate with you, sharing ideas and knowledge to make GWX even better (if that is possible...) I'll hope they learn that some communities can't be messed with... GWX devs, I thank you for all the work and time you have put into this, to make a small and buggy game perfect. I have been around combat flight and sub simulations for a long time and I have witnessed many free mods in last ten years. But I must say, that GWX team and its work is the best I have seen. The level of professionalism and the results that you guys deliver are simply amazing. Not to mention the fantastic GWX manual that covers everything most players need to know to master the game. SH3 + GWX became the top sub simulator ever that will stay on our hard disks for many years.

Just to clarify regarding the AI subs - alas we cannot make them dive and surface, some things are just plain ol hard coded... to make sub AI of that level we would need;
1) SDK
2) A programmer
3) Loads of time

Question - especially visible on that last pic.
Your water looks VERY good VERY far out.
Is this a feature of GWX 1.04, or are you running some other mod to reduce the drastic tiling of the water over any kind of distance at all?
Gotta say, that's a HUGE improvement, right there, and I'd like to get mine looking the same, if possible!

It looks like AA is off but AF is on max. If you don't know what AF (antroscopic filtering) does, it basically keeps crisp, clear & detailed graphics running into the distance. For example if you have a paved road, with AF off then the details will only be 'close' to you but if AF is on then the details will be viewable into the distance.:doh:
Does look nice though.
Dan is right, it's standard 1.03 8 km, I turn off AA when modelling, (it screws my 3d program).

Excellent work. But soviet submarine need reworked. For example - sich conning tower was before WWII, but all boats SHCH class during WWII have standart conning towers only. And more. Submarine was have 2 45mm guns. In screenshot I saw 1 20mm Oerlicon in fore position only. 45mm guns have in Liliput library in link:

If we have time. The problem with many of the older German AI subs... Well, all things in game are rendered before your U-boat and crew. The original AI U-boats would sometimes swap parts with player subs... Very long story... not a simple fix.

My own Grandfather also took part in operation Torch... though I don't know what ship carried him there.
Unfortunately, the Northampton class cruiser and/or her sister ships are not modelled in GWX.

While the GWX team are grateful for any & all additional work, each piece must & will be individually assesed to make sure of compatibility with existing content.
We are at a stage where we are cautious about taking on additional work/mods and then trying to make it 'fit' GWX. However, all is & will be considered.
As you all know, GWX 1.04 is a content expansion and there is a lot of it.;) We need to make sure that is all working first.
There will be comments from Kpt.Lehmann about this & other factors as soon as he is ready.:up:

Well, we gotta draw the line somewhere, we cant include EVERYTHING by everyone ! I can think of four good reasons why,
1) Time! I think the wait would be never ending!
2) I think the focus of 1.04 is on adding stuff we (the GWX team made ourselves,)
3) Whilst we are honoured to be able to include some exceptional work from other modders (they know who they are)
I dont think we want to 'do a microsoft' and come accross as trying to monopolise everything.
4) We'd probably end up breaking GWX anyway by adding too much stuff - plus the loading time would be long enough to grow a beard :oops:

I am not sure if these issues have been addressed, but I feel there are some issues with the damage models. At periscope depth I receive fire, and if I take a hit, the hit seems to be dispersed randomly. I am submerged and take damage to the forward torpedo room. If my periscope is up then it is the only thing that can be damaged if there is a “hit” I have issues with actually hitting a periscope.
Second the time to refuel at a milk cow, 30 days?
I hope these can be addressed.

I personally would go with SH3commander as gives you a whole heap of other very usefull tweaks
It recognises when you are at a milkcow\resupply or other friendly port and will set days in port to 1
Otherwise
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Cfg
Open the Basic.cfg in notepad
Scroll down to
[TIME]
TransferFlotilla=1
NbDaysInBase=28
NbPatrolsInFlotilla=3
NbMonthsInFlotilla=6
And change the NbDaysInBase
ALL port stays will be that length unless changed back
Short time in home port WILL lead to you getting the same patrol grid over and over again
Only make the changes while in port

Yes I know those in GWX 1.03 do fire guns. I can assure you I know it WELL :damn:
But enemy subs are one of those things that certainly raise the tension in some areas (Mediterranean, Arctic, Baltic) since you travel in surface never being sure you are not going to suddenly go BOOOOOOM without ever having noticed an enemy sub was ambushed nearby :up: In SH2 we had those enemy AI subs and it was a certainly hair-rising experince....I remember playing some missions in SH2 where a coal stone in my a**s would have been turned into a diamond at the end of the gameplay .... so tense was the situation.:arrgh!:
