EDIT Here's a beta if anyone wants to try it out

Is anyone interested in a random/reduced tonnage mod for merchants?

I threw together a mod that randomizes tonnage by 5% or 10% of the default value for all the merchants. I also have a few options that randomize and *reduce* tonnage.

For example

KSQ=Coastal Composite Freighter
(default tonnage 1850-1860)

option 1 - randomized lower value begins 10% lower than default and top value capped at default upper limit.
1665-1860 tons

option 2 - randomized lower value begins 5% lower than default value. Upper value can reach to 5% higher than default value.
1757-1942 tons

option 3 - randomized by 10% of lower default value, upper limit 10% higher.
1665-2035 tons

option 4 randomized and reduced
1053-1256 tons

option 5 -randomized and severely reduced (the biger ships such as 18000 ton passenger liner still are 18000 and large tankers still are around 10k)
542-681 tons

The work is all done basically, I haven't really tested it in game other than to see that the recog manual does show the new tonnage correctly and I did sink one ship that produced a tonnage in the desired range...so this would be considered a beta.

I would just need to upload it if there is any interest. Here's all the ships and the various tonnage options (the mod has 5 different options to choose from).

I'm a little unclear on what this does. I assume it changes the tonnage globally for the same ship, right? So every ship of a class that used to be 1713 tons might now be 1697 or something?

tedhealy

Yeah, the tonnage is changed for each ship. In each ship's config file, there is an option for displacement and displacementVariation. DisplacementVariation is a number that is added to the displacemnt when you sink a ship, in adddition displacementVariation is random between 0 and the number you provide.

So if you have a ship's displacement as 500, and a displacementVariation of 100, when you sink that ship type you'll get credit for a ship of anywhere from 500 to 600 tons.

The default game has a DVariation that is usually 5 or 10. Every ship of that type you sink will be roughly the same tonnage, this mod would increase the variation by 5 or 10% of the default original tonnage. So you could see a wider variety of tonnages sunk within a single ship type.

I also provided 2 example options that reduced and randomized tonnage.

I just listed each ship type and the 5 options that would be in the mod for new ship tonnage possibilites (with default for comparison).

c10% is the capped 10% option
THO is the tedhealy option where tonnage is reduced
THOH is the tedhealy hard option where tonnage is cut quite a bit
005% is the 5% variation from default
010% is the 10% variation from default

Example. You go with 010% option. You sink a large modern tanker (nippon). In the default game that ship will net you anywhere from 10,000 to 10,005 tons. With the 010% option, that ship could you net you anywhere from 9,000 to 11,000 tons. It should be a different random value from that range everytime you sink a ship of that type.

Oh! That is cool. I assumed it would just change the actual tonnage, and not change each ship sunk. So you sink 10 of the same ship, and get 10 different tonnages. That's pretty cool.

If anyone wants to try it out,

If you apply it over tater's new campaign layers, JSGME will say one file conflicts, but I've looked at the file and they are identical other than the new tonnage for the ship, so it should work fine.

Probably the roster on the large tanker.

My change was to up the max speed to 19 (as it should be).

Okay, wasn't sure. That is it though.

So if you don't have tater's campaign layers, you'll get the tanker's top speed at 19 with this mod too. If you already do have the campaign layers, this mod will keep the new tanker top speed of 19 when it overwrites that file.

Yeah, increasing the top speed won't break any stock missions, either.

setting speeds in cfg files ain the same as setting them in a sim file...

anyway I like this, and im using the +/- 5% mod, thanks, I had to combine it with the JP Ship length fix though.

Hi Ted

Searched for DisplacementVariation came up with this thread. I was looking to do the same, but with the values pr. ship i could find in the ONI-208-J manual.

ex. the Hakusika Maru

ONI numbers:
Gross - 8150 tons
D.W. (im asuming this is DeadWeight Tonnage or the difference between light and loaded displacement in tonns) - 11.475

i have typed this into the cfg file:

Displacement=9812
DisplacementVariation=1662.5

The boat sits fine at the waterline. Any ideas how one can utilize these values to have the boats sit regardig to its load (heavy or light)??

As far as I know these values just show up for tonnage sunk and have zero to do with how the ship sits. You could give a ship 100,000 for displacement and I don't think it would make any difference with regards to waterline.

I suppose you know that though and you're asking what value does alter how the ship sits...:hmm:...I don't know:dead: My modding ability is amateurish at best :damn:

It's a nice mod, but are we sure about the method used by sub captains to calculate the tonnage of their targets?

I mean.. I guess they only had the "standard" tonnage given on the Identification manual and that was the value they used in logs.

I'm not sure of course, but I think it's difficult for captains to know (or estimate acual tonnage of the ship they sunk.
