View Full Version : [REL] Remove the Sonar Notepad from sonar screen
Here's a little mod that will remove the sonar notepad entirely from the sonar screen.
Now it's up to the captain to identify ship types by the sound of the screws, get bearing info, etc.
Here's what the sonar station looks like now...

And here is a link to a website (Spanish) which has a hydrophone trainer.
http://www.simulacionnaval.com/mambo/
Click on Descargas and then on Silent Hunter 3 - Generales
Filename is Hidrofono
It was designed for SH3 but can be customized to work with SH4
Includes manuals in English, German and Spanish
Filesize = 13.35Mb
One note: When I installed on my XP machine it showed a failure with the included file EnCrypt6.ocx when first run (not registered in XP's registry).
Second attempt to load and it was OK ( I assume it registered itself).
Not sure how Vista may or may not handle this file.

I love...the crappy notepad....
Makes me feel like I have a sonar operator doing his job.

Exactly
The captain of a submarine does not identify ship by sound, the hydrophone operator does that, the skipper does not plot firing solutions, the plot team does that. The skipper does not plot courses, the navigator does that.
In short, what's so bad about the notepad, aside from that useless arrow button that seems to be broken?

thats stolen work, from harm'sway, cpt nautilas, and greyrider.
they were the original one's that made the sound trainer.
do you see any credits given to them in its readme?
they never asked permission to make it.
this was a blatent case of thieft, but i had to laugh, how proud they were to call
others work as thier own.

When I said...
Now it's up to the captain to identify ship types by the sound of the screws, get bearing info, etc.
that meant it's up to the player to identify the sound of the screws, etc.
Try this instead.....Now, when you feel like being the captain, you can still rely on reports from your sonar operator. But, when you feel like being the sonar operator, you'll have a more realistic experience (IMO) because the crew is counting on you for accurate information, and you won't have the benefit of an artificial aid to do your job for you.
You guys feel better now ?
The alternative, of course, is to just not use a mod that someone has shared with everyone else. How easy is that ? Going out of your way to let the modder know that you don't like the mod, and that you think the modder's research/testing/etc was a complete waste of time, is meaningless. It's meaningless because this thread is not about what you like or dislike.....it's simply about letting people know about the availability of a mod that someone else (and others) found to be really enjoyable.
