View Full Version : silent hunter 3 + commander and gwx advice needed
hello everyone at subsim.
i am new and wish to check out one or two things before messing up my computer again with sh3 sh commander and grey wolves. ( have cleaned out my system of all sh3 stuff. )
1st. here is a quick breakdown of my system:
athlon 2.4 ghz ( 3800+ )
memory 1 gig.
video mem. 256
video card nvidia gforce 7900gs
trend micro pccillin anti virus.
do you have any tips or hints regarding the above system spec.
2nd. iam unsure about sh/commander: do i have to run this programme with the grey wolves supermod - as described in gw/manual. i have read in one or two places that this may not be necassary ? my commputer seems to struggle with it running. alot smoother without.
i would very grateful for some advice here, as it has taken me a couple of years to get a system that can take sh3 on its own. i seem to have a good set up but is it good enough for all these extra's.
many thanks

Hi and welcome aboard
Your system specs are fine to play with GWX and SH3commander
In many cases GWX reduces stress on the comp as all TGAs are loaded into the dats where possible so SH3 isnt hunting for them
Load times are a little longer due to the extra content but totally worth it
SH3commander is not a necessity but IMHO you gain so much with it and as is only used to load the game it doesnt take any extra resources while SH3 is running
Dont forget the extra GWX specific cfgs for SH3commander

Welcome aboard flag4 :arrgh!:
Like BBW said....SH3 Cmdr should have no impact on your computers resources during gameplay :nope:
Enjoy the GWXperience
hello jimbuna
just a quick note to say thanks to you and bbw for your support. seems to be once you get beyond the stock sh3 game there is so much more to learn and take in, and i'm on my way, cheers !

flag4,
Welcome aboard:D
Your system is fine for the game. you can improve the frame rate by getting another gig of memory. If you can't afford that now, get FSautostart to free up memory.
If you are not playing online with mutiplayer, disable your internet connection, firewall and antivirus.
GWX 1.03 speeds up the game and reduces the load on your CPU as noted above.
AS BBW said: SH3CMDR will increase loading time (if you use the combined skin pack, loading time is increased a lot) but it improves the game immensely. "Don't leave home (port) without it!"
hello irish 1958
thanks again for the advice about memory - i think i'll go for the extra stick !
meanwhile back on the waves...
i'm in 1939, type 11A; i'm being sent out to patrol the east coast of england and north to norway but cant work out fuel consumption...i'm on way down to 50% before i get there. i'm keeping the speed down, and using batteries but...?
also there does'nt seem to be a lot of action in terms of sinkings etc, might get the occasional tramp steamer blowin' through but no bigger stuff, my crew are hungry - need to work it off a bit !!
am i doing something wrong - is there a correct approach to what i'm doing in my little dugout on these early war patrols.
thanks again

Fuel is a problem with the type II boats; they were used mainly for coastal work because of this.
If you use a type II, you need to refuel just as you leave friendly waters.
Running on batteries does not increase your range as you have to recharge and that uses a lot of fuel (your ? starbard engine runs at full speed to recharge and doesn't propel your boat during this time.
To see what your best speed is:
Set a speed and ask your navigator your range. Then increase or decrease speed and keep asking him your range. You will soon get the speed at which you have the best range.
