on subsim download page for sh3 there is a transparent dials officer mod by "sale999" that made the black background of the text window dials and slideouts transparent. the only problem with that is the slideouts had a look as unexposed picture due to no background color and it was very hard to see the guages.

in sh4 the text window is by itself and seems to have its own background image that is not shared by the slideouts. this should make the mod work great for sh4.

i wanted to ask someone to make this background transparent so only the text is visible but i don't have the skill to do it myself.

in sh3 the files were in the data/menu/gui/layout folder and somehow he used photoshop to make the black backgrounds transparent.

i think they are in sh4 in the data/munu/data/dds.uri folder but i'm not sure.

i have a easy to use dds converter i found here:

http://files.filefront.com/DDS+Converter+2+10/;3577988;/fileinfo.html

but i don't know how to do anything with photos or make transparent images.

will someone please think about doing this mod when they have the time to try it?

Put the curser to the top of the text window and a slider will appear and slide it to the left to make it transparent . Hope this helps .

If you take a look at this thread ( http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=528527#post528527 ) which is about moving the text message box on start-up, you'll see that it is also possible to make the background transparent on start-up, just by making a simple tweak to the menu_1024_678.ini file - the relevant part from that thread is copied below:

Voila! the change is simple - just make the following additional change to menu_1024_768.ini: [G3F I241]
Color=0xFFFFFF00 ;was 80

Now, all the functionality seems to still be there, and the message log background starts and stays transparent! :D

This does require manually tweaking the .ini file, since so many other mods touch that file too - if there were a graphic-based solution, it might be something that would be easier to install via JSGME, so you may want to keep looking down your original path just in case, but the above tweak will work if you don't mind editing your .ini file in notepad.

Good luck!

[PS - your last post came in while I was typing this one - neither this .ini tweak nor using the slider make the text go away - they just make the background transparent. This .ini tweak just keeps you from having to change the slider every time you load up a game.]

thanks, that was just what i was looking for.

but now you got me thinking about relocating it somewhere else lol.

i feel the urge to start trying things, i may never get back to actually playing sh4.

thats the resolution he was using so try his numbers.

it is like the grid on map, change the numbers to move it up or down, left or right untill it is where you want it to be. then save a copy of the file as your mod for it.

just have to start up the game a few times till you find your own right numbers.

Nah - I'm running 1024x768 - some of the other posters in the thread were running higher resolutions and gave their numbers to help out those who were doing the same.

At 1024x768, changing the last two numbers in the Zone line in [G3F I229] to
100 -614 will get you close - then you'll need to adjust to get it right where you want it. At that resolution, there isn't enough room to really fit it in down there for my taste, so I stuck it over in the bottom left corner. At a higher resolution where there would be a bigger gap in the middle, that is where I would put it - I wish they had just left it where it was in SH3, but at least they made it pretty easy to move around.

Good luck!
