View Full Version : A scripted event or pure chance?

In another post I described my introduction to the Second Happy Time. Lots of destroyers and planes, but not so many targets as I'd expected.

Well, as fuel was dwindling I started to head back via Bermuda. Imagine my excitement when I picked up a contact which turned into 3 large tankers in line astern. They were moving fast so I quickly positioned and attacked.

Got hits on all and was rubbing my hands when suddenly it hit me....

What was that flag I saw? Why no cheering?

Oh no, look at the map - green marker for the first as it sank.

Minutes later I was the less than proud 'owner' of 55,450 tons of neutral tankers!

So I wondered whether these guys were scripted (if that's the right word) or whether it was chance? If it was chance, might they have been enemies on another day? It sure was a nice target but what a let-down...

Scripted I suspect.....don't forget there are South American countries who remained neutral until near the wars end.
Check the pulldown chart in the periscope screen for countries, dates and flags :arrgh!:

Wish I'd taken more notice of the flag Jim!

Something like Argentina's springs to mind (the naval flag obviously), although I wasn't aware they shipped much oil...Will have a better look later.

Don't suppose the full details of the ships could be gleaned from the log in SH3Cmdr?

i noticed that when you see 2-3 ship sailing together without any escort they are generally neutral

You do get lone fast tankers from the allies sailing about

Always check the flags
Could have been Panamanian or Venezuelan tankers

I have found pairs of tankers that were American in the carribean. The move pretty fast, and are sometimes armed, so the deck gun is out of the question.

I have seen a tanker with a merchant vessel as well, so there is occasions when you will get mini convoy's without escorts. It always pays to check the flag before opening fire. Did that once, and Uncle Karl wasn't that happy that I sank a German ore carrier!:88) At least I didn't get shot for it, and I still kept my command!

Had a look at a few more flags but didn't see what I remembered. Don't really want to replay the episode just to identify them so I'll assume 'South American'. Anyway, that leaves me with 95k tons so far for the patrol :D but 55k was neutral :-j!

Wonder if I should go back to the save before my unfortunate trigger-happiness?
