Hey guys,
Might be going to the USS Cod in Cleveland tomorrow 05 Jun. If so, are there any requests for specific pictures of the boat?
It totally may not happen but any modders that need a reference pic, I may be able to help out.
Will check until 2300EST.

Some detail shots of the conning tower torpedo firing panel would be most appreciated. Other instruments/ indicators are welcomed too!:yep:
Haha, I knew it.. excellent.. can't wait..

Well, weather not looking so good tomorrow. I'd like to look at the Cod but not too sure about fencing with all this frontal weather to do it. I have a low thunderstorm tolerence...unless I'm being well paid! ;)
Post any requests anyway. If I don't go tomorrow, it's on my list for the future.
Deacon
P.S. OG I will do what I can.

Unfortunately, the Cod does not allow access to the conning tower. You're allowed to climb up the ladder about half way, which lets your head up there to look around. Makes it difficult to see any of the panels, especially being at floor level.
Gus
Well I wont be there... was there Saturday.
Anyway, the conning tower is off limits for the tourist...
Reason is we want to preserve our TDC (Mk4) which is probably the last Mk4 in the world that actually runs.
Pampanito has a Mk3 that also runs fine.
So, here some details...
Rangeindicator for SJ&STradar

I was there last summer during the air show, the Cod is an amazing boat not to mention some of the people that work there as well, Gino, did we meet??
Anyhow here is what I walked away with:

deacon211, no hurry.
Gino, thank you for posting these, sir. It's somewhat difficult to come by high resolution reference material of this particular panel.

Unfortunately never made it. Did fly down to Suffolk where some multimillionaire has a fleet of WWII planes. The nicest on display was a fully functional PBY. If interested, I'll post pics.
Thanks for the nice pics BTW. Looks like much better than I could have managed!

I was there during the airshow on Sunday. Have seen a lot of people, but probably not you. (Which is a pity, I could have shown you the CT)
Maybe next time.
Anyway...for detail:
A close up of the conning tower fire control panel for the aft-torpedoes.
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/5955/tfc1la3.th.jpg (http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tfc1la3.jpg)
From the inside...
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/5449/tfc2ta5.th.jpg (http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tfc2ta5.jpg)
And if you look at one mirrored...
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/5403/gspflippedne9.th.jpg (http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gspflippedne9.jpg)
Now you can see that SH4 is not quite right with their version of the lights on the CT fire control panel (red/green flashing)
SH4 has a lot of Cod 'stuff' in there, but this one didn't quite make it...

I'll be in the area in about three weeks, not sure I'll have time to visit the Cod but I'll try. I did visit the Lionfish a couple of years back.

Well, durn, all this time in CLE (entire family from that region) and I never knew there were posters from the USS Cod group here?? I've been on that boat 3 times, I think. Last time, dragged my wife through. She actually enjoyed it. (Keeper :know: )
Real shame you don't let people in the Con or higher, though. Adults, at least - I mean, I can see no kids (what they would do to the controls in USS Blueback out here sent shivers down my spine!)

@ Gino,
agreed, the Devs did quite a nice job on this - but there's always room for improvement. Sadly, with absence of a SDK, modifications of 3D interiors / texture mapping are atm rather limited. For the moment i'm modifying SH4's 2D art, i.e. using higher res textures than default, to improve legibility and overall appearance.
Comparison of stock SH4 gauges (1024x1024):
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/3786/stockgaugesol3.th.jpg (http://img201.imageshack.us/my.php?image=stockgaugesol3.jpg)
and modified gauges i'm working on (2048x2048):

!any pointers concerning the gauges are highly appreciated!

I'd like to have some shots of officer's country.
Wardroom, officer's staterooms, goat locker, captain's cabin and yeoman shack.
I'm currently writing something like a novel (in german) and need to get a feeling of these rooms.
I could have visited USS Torsk when I was in Baltimore some years ago, but I didnt, damn...
Real shame you don't let people in the Con or higher, though. Adults, at least - I mean, I can see no kids (what they would do to the controls in USS Blueback out here sent shivers down my spine!)
Unfortunately, some adults behave like their kids...
There is also an insurance thingy. There is no direct supervision inside the conning tower. Thereofre the insurance company doesn't cover that area. If somebody would get hurt up there we'd have a huge financial problem.
BUT... we are working on a plan to let "special visitors" inside the conning tower. We MAY even have the TDC running for these visitors.
When that will happen I don't know. We first need to asses if anybody is willing to pay extra for a looooong guided tour... And it will probably be off-season (so the boat might be cold)
I'll keep the forum posted on this one.
groetjes,

http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/1808/telemeteromnimeteroverayh1.th.jpg (http://img48.imageshack.us/my.php?image=telemeteromnimeteroverayh1.jpg)
Now as far as the Torpedo fire control goes:
This is how it worked (apart from some details)
http://rapidshare.com/files/35674898/Torpedo_Firing_Controls.pdf.html
This document is still WIP, because the drawings for the Conning Towewr Fire Control panel are not exactly matching those from Cod
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/5955/tfc1la3.th.jpg (http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tfc1la3.jpg)
But the text of the torpedo tube lights are almost correct. (1, 1-IN, 2, 2-IN etc.) The text is not vertical (1 above IN) but horizontal (1-IN)
The "Angle Set" light, "Gyro Spindle" light, and the "Ready" light are different on Cod.
These read "AS", "GSP" and "R"
http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/6291/gspkr5.th.jpg (http://img365.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gspkr5.jpg)
Furthermore, there ate NO green lights on the Fire control panel in the conning tower. All are red when lit. So, I suggest that if you want to be close to historical, than the light is black when the tube is not available, and red when it is ready to fire...
Any questions or remarks sofar? :know:

Eh, no...
The range was displayed on the Range unit.

The range unit as show below has a display which read the range.

Also see http://www.hnsa.org/doc/radar/part4.htm#pgSJ-1
There you can find (you may have to scroll down a bit) how the SJ was operated. The bearing indicator and the Range unit gave the precise information-whereas the PPI and the Range indicator unit were used to get the correct results.

The conning tower has the original WW2 attack scope and post WW2 observation scope. Besides, there are so many switches, etc. no need to have visitors up there swipping things.....and they do:down:

I live about 20 minutes driving from the Cod.
Claustrophobic is a big word... :)
If you imagine that there were roundabout 80 crewmembers on board for a patrol...yeah, I guess most people would call that 'claustrophobic'
However, the crewmembers were all volunteers, and I never heard any veteran complain about cramped spaces...
On one trip of the Cod, the sub was filled with 156!!! sailors (from Cod, and from dutch O-19) for three days. See what "Doggie" Dishong said abot that:
"The next three days were a slight bit crowded, but these dutch sailors being submariners themselves, stayed out of our way. I stood watches in the engine room and slept in the same place. There was a slight congestion around the crew's head at times, but what could you expect? Only two toilets for about 140 men. (156 is the real number) But I didn't hear of any accidents."

Gino,
I'm sure you know John Fakan. We've been emailing back and forth the past couple of weeks. He provided me with some drawings of the Cod. A great gentleman and a big help. Anyway, he invited me to the Cod tomorrow (June 12) at 1900 to help out. I'm looking forward to it. Will you be there? If so, I hope to meet you both. Last time I visited the Cod I met Darryl (I think that was his name). He also was nice and very informative. It was closing time and he took the time to talk to me about the Cod and other things.

This is SOOO NOT FAIR! I sit here over in Europe (no trip or business trip planned to go to the States) Dam...Is there any diesel boat somewhere in Europe, one could visit. I am talking proper US NAVY Fleet boat!...I guess not hey :(
Well I am at least going to check out the U-995 (VII- C) in Laboe next month ;)

I bet you don't have many of those in the states. I know there is a Type IX but most of the VII's that the US got after the war where blown up I think :p

Cheers!...could be sooner then later. We (the company I work for) have a Design Studio in Cypress Ca, I guess one could always do some "Design research" up in Wisconsin ;). But as i said nothing planned. Will have to do some lobbying to my boss i guess "You know, we really need to look at getting some American influence here in Europe, you should send me over for...lets say 3 weeks...what do you say :p"

Cox, since your profile says you're in Frankfurt, do try to get up to the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven. I spent my last weekend of living in Germany up there and had a great time - lots of boats to see (including the Type XXI U-2540) and a great indoors museum as well.

The circles were not standard issue, but one of the suggested ways to improve your radar "experience":
The following suggestions will speed the obtaining of data from the PPI and increase the accuracy: 1. Add inked circles on the face of the PH tube for estimating range (four solid circles, interspaced by four dotted circles). Care must he taken not to scratch the tube in any way.
2. Improvise a more accurate 360 degrees bearing circle over which rides a cursor, or thread stretched across the screen. Targets may then he split by this thread and hearing read on the circle.

Gino, in that picture of the PPI scope, what is the color of the radar sweep? Is it green like in SH4, or is it a different color?

Orange for the PPI, Green for the range, but mind that during WW2 a lot of red filters were used on scopes like these ones. These filters did not last long somehow, and most of the boats (if not all) don't have them anymore.
