Guten abend, meine freunde!

Been awhile since I lurked in the murky depths of Subsim, and I can see that much has transpired since I last surfaced in these waters. And so, it appears that some changes have evolved since I was last here. Which brings me to some questions that I'm sure the old hands will have answers for.

Specifically:
I seem to remember when I last installed SH3 (well over a year ago) that when a new skin was created, you could just pop it in the SH3/data/textures/tnormal/tex folder and the game would use it, but now, it appears that the texture has to be repacked into the originating .dat file for the game to use it. Am I mis-remembering?

Additionally:
I've mucked about with SH3 Inspector and SH3 Mini-tweaker a bit, and I'm not sure that I didn't bugger things up in so doing. Where I first tweaked the 88mm HE ammo for the deck gun (in Mini-Tweak) it worked fine; when I went back into Mini Tweak to set things back aright, instead of the moderate values I had used, the file was reading damage values of 1E+7.837322 (or sommat to that effect), which explained the next game's sinking of a Revenge-class BB in one hit. (I think it the damage model had allowed it, that BB would have been blown into its component atoms - ridiculous doesn't even begin to describe it.) Suffice it to say, I was a bit confused, and leery on messing with the new values lest I end up with a one-shot WMD. So the question is, is that proper behavior for the file, or am I just plain missing a vitally important fact here?

I'm reinstalling the whole shooting match as I type this, for want of a clean slate to work from, since I made the foolish mistake of tweaking sans backups (well, I did make backups, but I was messing with so many different files that I'm not at all sure that I didn't corrupt those, too).

Profound thanks in advance!

Hello there, oder soll Ich auch Gutten Abend sagen?
1.- About the skins, some of them come on DAT files, and others simply TGA fles.
The best option you have is to enable them, no matter if they are TGA or DAT via JSGME (It'a very cool program that makes a backup or your files, so, when you want you can disable a mod and the files are restored) check the link http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/. It's very simple and easy to use, but it is also a very powerful tool that spares you a lot of work.
2.- About using Mini Tweaker, when you change something with this mgnificent progar (I use it myself very often) itcreates a copy file in the same directory, and if you do not delete it, SH3 will keep reading the copy file (original) and not the one with your modifications. You must delete the copy file file or move it to another folder in case you want to restore it later. This proces must be done everytime you use the Mini Tweaker program. If you see that strange number, like scientific notation, you should better reinstall SH3 from scratch to avoid future problems. If I am not mistaken that kind of values is a sign that something is wrong.
Hope this info was helpful, even if I am not certain if this is exactly what you were asking.
Anyway, if you have other questions or need further help, just let me konw an I wil be more than happy to help you if I can.

Dead on target, CZ... danke!

Reinstalled from scratch, then created a backup of most of the moddable files. Experimented a bit, then went back to see what kind of changes happened. Took out the "copy of..." files (since I already had backups) and it worked a charm.

Now for the skins part; going to have to experiment there as well... JSGME downloading as I type.

Many thanks, once again!
