View Full Version : [REL] Sun Mod

Back again with another small texture tweak. This time I thought the sun could be a little more distinct in its shape, rather than the vague blob we have in stock SH4. So I made a new halo pattern and even added a subtle lens flare effect.
I realise the celestial bodies (ie the sun and moon) have already been tweaked by SeeAdler's excellent mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=109913); mine just enhances the outline of the sun and even works without the mod!
That means no conflicts!

I may be tweaking this further, and if people would like a version without the lens flare then that is also possible. Let me know!
Enjoy the sunshine!
NOTE: Results may vary depending on resolution and monitor contrast ratio! (ie, you may not see as distinct a shape as others...)

Schweet, will check it out!
EDIT! Ahhhh, just looked at the DDS, cool trick man kudos!

What videocard are you using for this?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you will only see the lense flare if you have an nvidia card. Just like the rest of the real good glare/bloom effects. There's an issue with ATI cards. We don't get those great sunsets.
I have an ati X1950 pro, and I'm not seeing the lense flares.

@Monolith,
Thats what I was wondering what card. I have an ATI also with big round ball in the sky:cry:

I don't see why you wouldn't see the lens flare... All I've done is modify the existing halo DDS file with a different outline. That would suggest the ATI cards are rather selective in what they choose to render. This is not a new effect per se, but rather just a clever texture trick! It's quite subtle - make sure you're not just missing it. ;)
I'm using an nvidia myself, so I could be wrong. Could you PM me some screenshots? It might help with the diagnosis. I might also send you a differently-encoded DDS file to try, if you're willing to test. This was a DXT5, whereas I believe DXT3s are more common...

I'd be willing to test whatever you wish.
Just to be clear, what I'm calling lense flare is these little circles...

I have the halo around the sun (perhaps not quite the same as Nvidia), but I do not have the 'little circles'. I'll get some screenshots.
There's a definate issue with ATI vs Nvidia cards. most commonly seen with sunsets. ATI does not get that nice full screen glare/colored sky during sunsets. More of just the orange ball going down. There's an old thread about it around here somewhere.

Cpt, it is something with ATI cards as Monolith said. The sun is missing the bloom effect. I will slip this nifty mod in and she how she looks.

I tried this with the ATI card. No change:cry:

Sorry to hear that guys!
It just raises the question of what the ATI card is using to render the effect, and if that is modifiable in any way... :hmm:

Well...don't be too sad fellas.....I have a brand new Nvidia 8800 GTX and was getting the halo effect.....but I also had the sun shinning through metal structures, like the periscope shears.
Now, for some reason ...unknown to me,....I don't get the Halo effect anymore.
But the sun doesn't shine through solid objects anymore....
I'll take no Halos...I can live with that.
But the sun shinning through objects?.......Glad thats gone! :yep:
