View Full Version : Finns
Have any Finnish people (or anyone else for that matter) on Subsim (Dowly...?) seen the movie about the Winter War front called Talvisota? If so, is it worth seeing?

Totally excellent.
Some of the black humor reminded me of Full Metal Jacket. But different.

Its is very good, its not militaristic or anyway propagandist movie. People are scared and cry, like in real life. The battles are very realistic, rare in a war film.. It tells the story of 23th Regiments, 2nd batallion and 4th company, part of the 8th Division, raised from South Ostrobothnia region in Finland. The battles take place in the river Taipale, some of the fiercest fighting in the war took place there. The characters capture very well the Finnish and specially the Southern Ostrobothnian mentality. The dry, black humour is one of them.
You should bookmark this page, http://www.tali-ihantala.fi/ , its a movie coming to theaters in Independence Day. Could be really good, its about the massive battles of 1944 in the Karelian Isthmus and culminating in the Battle of Tali-Ihantala.

Indeed I've seen it. Quite a few times. Excellent film! I'm expecting 'Tali-Ihantala' to fill it's boots, but I'm not sure if any movie without the excellent cast of 'Talvisota' can do it. We'll see... :hmm:
I can't wait to see Talvisota. I just hope I can find it somewhere in the States... Also, is there a trailer for Tali - Ihantala?

There's also an american made documentary about Winter War with some scenes showing the movie with some re-enactments. Very well made documentary!
It's called "Fire & Ice", check it if you find it somewhere.

Isnt there two versions of Talvisota? A cinema version and a TV miniseries one? I had the movie on VHS and when they showed it in the telly as a 2 or 3 part miniseries there was some extra content in it. Like where the guy tells bunch of soldier that it is dangerous to keep open fire b/c of the russian aircraft, they ignore the warnings and the next time the soldier goes by the place they are all dead.

Seems there could be three versions :hmm:

Three versions? If so, I would want the most comprehensive. I HOPE the short one isn't the only option for North America -- the movie looks amazing. Reminds me a bit of Stalingrad judging from the trailer.

There's one that's pretty old where a guy goes to the lake and gets the Sauna all warmed up and then yells over the lake to his friend something like "Wanna come to sauna!?!?!?! There's plenty of beer too!!" and soon after there's dozens of boats coming towards his shore.

Finnish people are nutters, but very nice with it. Only ever been to Finland once, rented a cabin with some buddies out in the sticks about 20km from Tampere and spent the whole time getting drunk, having barbecues, saunas, then swimming and sailing on the lakes, it was great. The airline lost my luggage at the airport, so I ended up having to wash my clothes in the lake and stuff like that, but I didn't give a toss, I was having too good a time to worry about it:rotfl:
:D Chock
..whole time getting drunk, having barbecues, saunas, then swimming and sailing on the lakes, it was great.
That's what I do on most weekends in summertime.
We have an summer house on a small island in the middle of nowhere with an big lake surrounding it.

"The people of Finland have by this step taken their fate in their own hands; a step both justified and demanded by present conditions. The people of Finland feel deeply that they cannot fulfil their national and international duty without complete sovereignty. The century-old desire for freedom awaits fulfilment now; Finland's people step forward as a free nation among the other nations in the world."
The Finnish declaration of independence was adopted by the Parliament of Finland on 6 December 1917.
The official festivities usually commence with the raising of the flag on Tähtitorninmäki, in Helsinki. There is a religious service at the Helsinki Cathedral, followed.

It is traditional for Finnish families to light two candles in the windows of their home in the evening, Historically these two candles were used as a sign to inform Finnish Jäger troops that the house was ready to offer shelter and keep them hidden from the Russians.
Parades are held, honorary guards are posted on all the war cemeterys and candles light them up.

I think talvisota is one of the best movies ever! I saw Tali-Ihantala yesterday with a bunch of veterans and it was great too.
And last but not least:
Hyvää syntymäpäivää Suomi ja kiitos kaikille jotka uhrasivat henkensä ja taistelivat tämän hienon maan puolesta!
Translation: Happy birthday Finland and thank you to everyone who sacrificed their lives and fought for this fantastic country!

Also the thing that should be said about Tali-Ihantala is that it's a bit more of a documentary than a normal movie. It doesn't have a clear "main character" but shows what happened in the battle and I really like those kinds of movies. The best way to describe the movie is, I think, to say it's like Tuntematon Sotilas with only the parts were they fight and then a bit more fighting and lots more info about stuff. So by watching the movie one kan learn alot! And from one thing to another, my grandfather probably fought there but I have never thought of asking him neither has my father and now he's old and I don't want to bother him about the stuff. One of the only stories my grandfather has told my dad was that he and some other people were sitting in foxholes and my grandfathers good friend was sitting in another foxhole when the friend got shot by a tank in the head. I'm doing some research about were my grandfather has been and JR12 or Jänkäjääkärit as they were called so if anyone knows anything about JR12 any info would be great! Also does anyone know were I can find a maps of "Suursaari" from year 1939,1941,1942,1943,1944,1945 and a list of who owned wich house until 1939 because my grandfather lived there and I'm going back there to claim back what belongs to my family! I alsoa need weapons, boats, personell and REALLY BIG speakers and radio mast and transmitter so we can play säkkijärven polkka the whole time, since it has been shown in Jatkosota that russian radiomines don't work if säkkijärven polkka is played on the right frequency and maby their other weapones won't work either , so we can conquer the Island that was stolen from us:arrgh!:

I know they were in the Karelian Isthmus during the battles, so your grandfather could have been there. But we have to remember that it wasnt the only battle during the "Fourth strategic offensive" of the Red Army, just the most important. Viipurinlahti, Tienhaara, Vuosalmi, Siiranmäki, Nietjärvi and Ilomantsi were also important. The Soviet casualties of 200.000 men, lost divisions and 1000 tanks/planes in summer -44 made them change their demands of unconditional surrender. And the Salpa-line was still left and the army strongest ever thanks to the material from Germany. Finland wasnt beaten but exited the war just before Germany was done for.
I know there are books about "Jänkäjägers" written, so go to the library;) Same goes for Suursaari island, books to be found. You could also call the War Archive in Helsinki and ask were different records are kept. There were two interestin battles on Suursaari, the capture back from Soviets in -42 and the repelled German invasion attempt, operation Tanne Ost in -44.;)
Those Jänkäjägers still meet yearly, i remember them from the time i lived in Lapland.
They had some famous commanders in that unit. Colonel Albert Puroma as regimental commander and Major Aito Keravuori commanding 3rd batallion. Keravuori later joined US army where he was founding and training Special Forces, he fought in Laos and Vietnam. He was a Colonel an is buried in Arlington like Törni/Thorne. There are also books about these guys called Marttisen miehet that enlisted in the US Army.

"Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Pony trekking or camping,
Or just watching TV,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
It's the country for me.
You're so near to Russia,
So far from Japan,
Quite a long way from Cairo,
Lots of miles from Vietnam.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Eating breakfast or dinner,
Or snack lunch in the hall,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all.
You're so sadly neglected,
And often ignored,
A poor second to Belgium,
When going abroad.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all."
