Actually looking at those pictures, all the guys wear ties...I wonder if thats only for the photo session. Can't imagine you would wear a tie in the heat of the pacific all the time.

In all documentary films I have seen on fleet boats, most men are bear breasted or just wearing t-shirts, that's including the skippers (t-shirt, or buttoned up shirt), like in the game.

I don't know if you guys have noticed this but the officers hats looks pretty darn bad in the game, WAY TO SMALL. Just noticed it as i wanted to do a proper skin for them.

This mod smells of the word, "awesome". Good thing i just ended my last patrol, how now i can load this puppy up. The lack of rank insigna was bugging the hell out of me.

Is it possible to get rank on the enlisted as well? I imagine that be alot of work though.

Just had a look in the Crew.Cfg files...ALL GERMAN NAMES!!!. Someone know how this works?

Will have a look around.

EDIT: I think one has to tweak this file "CrewMembers3D.upc" then one should be able to see all ranks onboard...will have a go at it.

@Ducimus, As far as i know, the enlisted guys never wore any kind of insignias or badges. But again if you have any pic that proves me wrong please post, cause i am also interested in that.

Your probably right. I think my desire to see rank on enlisted sleeves is some sort of holdover from SH3. :roll:

This is looking great - just a couple of questions/observations:

1. I think you have the ensign and LT-JG insignia backwards the way they are listed in your original post above (the ensign one should be the yellow one) - see here for good info/pictures, including info about some of the warrant officer ranks/insignia that might be useful: http://www.navy.mil/navydata/navy_legacy_hr.asp?id=266)

2. Do I understand from your post that so far whether these show up or not has nothing to do with the "actual" ranks held by the crew members on whom the shirts are displayed? If not - you might want to consider only putting some of the lower ranks on all the shirts - seems unlikely that you would see too many LT-CMDRs (besides maybe yourself as skipper) on your boat. Of course, if you ever figure out a way to trigger the display to be the right rank for the crewman, that would be awesome!

This looks cool in any event - gotta love anything that gets us closer to historical accuracy - eye candy rules :up:

As to what shows up in game. Its all controlled from the "UPCCrewData"
I was tinkering with it yesterday but stopped as I ended up with only a head floating around in the air :p. I think you are right about the LT-Cmdr's. Thats pretty easy to fix. My target was to have 5 ranks shown on the officers. Stock game has 2 officer types at all times and not more

Is this the kind of mod you have to be in port to apply or could you safely do this one while on patrol? Would love to try it but just spotted a juicy convoy/task force (not sure which yet) and if necessary I'll wait to pass out insignia to my guys when/if we get back to port.

Nope, you can apply this anytime, its just a texture mod, no scripting involved as such.

Agree with panthercules: The large majority of sub skippers were Lt. Commanders. You shouldn't see any Lt. Commanders or Commanders on your boat.

Well let me start off with a Hoo RAhh for this mod...however rarely did you have so much of a range of officers on a boat...I know this is a game, but....next I would have these guys in a sling, if they showed up on watch looking like rag bags...oh well I guess I expected more from my ARMY officers...LOL than the navy did...just joking...

The only time you were required to wear a hat or cap was topside, The ties were only formal and not worn topside while at sea, but required on entering port.

Tried out the lower ranks version (thanks for listening :) ) last night - very cool touch seeing these insignia on the officers. :up:

Regarding the enlisted crewmen, I haven't yet been able to locate info that I'm sure is time-appropriate for WWII sub crews - the following info may be too recent, but it does indicate that it may make sense to try to put some insignia on at least some of the enlisted guys if you can:

The insignia here* represents a Petty Officer First Class (the rate) who is a Boatswain's Mate (the rating). A rating badge is worn on the left upper sleeve of all uniforms in grades E-4 through E-6. Chief Petty Officers (E-7 through E-9) wear collar devices on their white and khaki uniforms, and rating badges on their Service Dress Blues.

I found a nice file looks like something for SH3 that is a US officer hat chipui.dds

Well...those are the ones I m using :) actually. The problem with the hat in the game is for me the size and shape of the actual 3D model. Looks to small and weird sort a. To change that, one would have to tweak it in 3DS MAX or something.

One could ofcourse take out the hats all together by just changing some lines in the "CrewMembers3D.upc" script.

Seems to be a problem with the LOWER OFFICER RANKS INSIGNIA 1.2.
If you experience problems simply delete the "UPCData" folder in the mod. DEACTIVATE THE MOD BEFORE DOING THIS PLEASE!

Actually, they did, but often it was the navy-issue baseball cap. In a recent article in WW II magazine there are a couple of pictures of crewmen wearing said cap, both at the dive planes station and on deck watch. It'd sure be nice to have those as an option in-game.

Well take your time man. I started to fiddle with 3DS MAX and that hat is pretty high up on the to do list. I thought that one might actually be able to model that...eventually (humbled as its a pretty complex prog...at least for starters) so far I seem to have problems porting stuff back to the game.dat as it keeps crashing :P Reading up on it but.
