the download page here at subsim has only a few of all the mods that are out there thanks to the hard work of the members here. (i guess the most popular)

why isn't there a page to upload all mods the same way we post our threads?

if it's a limited database issue then we could use one download forum to be able to post the links to our filefront pages.

my idea is based on the idea of giving members a chance to see and try a larger selection of mods to the liking of each individual.

as we all know, most mods came from the expansion or improvements of other mods or ideas based on the same or simular practices.

maybe nobody feels the same but i can't help feeling that it would be a great benefit to all.

The problem is that maintaining such a list is difficult. Links go bad etc. Its a tough job for whoever tries to manage it.

of course you can do it - it is done on other sites quite frequently

The problem is the who is going to do all the work though - I wouldn't want to do it to be perfectly honest... dead links is not a problem since they can be reported by other members and there are usually a few mirrors about as well

There's more to it than meets the eye; Filefront and others of a similar ilk will try to delete the upload to download files after a certain time determined by them so it's a constant battle to keep download links active.

well what if the poster maintained his own post?

non working links and such if unfixed can be removed when reported can't they?

i would think we could report posts that needed removing and it would be maintained that way.

a moderator would simply have to wait for a report to take action to notify the poster to fix it or be removed and all the rest is up to the poster to keep his mod download updated and available or be removed.

Wasn't there a post about this just a few weeks ago? Someone said he wanted to do it; I suggested just taking over the stickied one and cleaning it up, but was told it would be easier to start from scratch.

If you can do it, more power to you.

Just managing the GWX list of links is a PITA.

Yeah, I thought that too, that's why I started U-Boot.Realsimulation.com awhile ago. The download central (http://picturehost.realsimulation.com/UBRS_DLC/index.php)only lists 1493 mods and files, but I'm trying hard to catch the rest also.

Yes Jan Kyster tried to do it, but in the end he was not satisfied with the result. The main problem is that the forum software didn't allow some of the ideas he had, so reorganizing the whole plan he had was too hard and purpose-less, since it would come up with more or less the same result of the current sticky:hmm:

I think just cleaning out the sticky would be an improvement

especially for newbies - I remember how frustrating it was for me to read something that sounded really cool just to be greated with a link that lead nowhere. And half of the time when the link went somewhere it proved to be to a thread with a lot of dead links to the mods or programs I wanted...

Heck, I would do that if given the go-ahead...

now this is exactly the type of setup i was talking about having. If Terrapin can do this on his site, (please no offense ment to Terrapin for his wonderfull website) then why can't Subsim give it's members a way to upload mods to share with other members? Subsim's download section is nice but severely limited.

Subsim's hosting costs currently exceed well 500$ a month. Yes, that's right, you could probably rent an apartment or a house with that:o Imagine what would happen if it turned into an archive-sharing community:88)

Also, the purpose of subsim never was that, but instead serving as a meet point for simmers (forum) and reference in terms of reviews and information. The fact that community mods have blossomed here are a testament to that focus, but as you will notice, none of those supermods are hosted here, but externally.:yep:

wow! that's a lot of $

i wasn't aware how expensive it is, just goes to show why it's so important that we contribute to Subsim when we can so they can keep up the good work they do.

Easy answer: I could do that because in the last years I had

a.) relatively cheap bandwidth prices

b.) many folks who donated to UBRS

c.) a sufficient click-through rate of the ads.

b.) and c.) are neclectable since my 3 month absence.
