Bungo pete. That ex Japanese submariner turned destroyer captain. He know's his stuff. Reputed to be superhuman, or supernatural, the Bungo straights is known as a submarine graveyard. Unless your crazy good, or just plain crazy, avoid the Bungo Straights if you can. If you must go into the Bungo Suido, good luck, your going to need it.

My advice, this guy is death incarnated, avoid him, and don't try and get around this guy in calm weather.

Bungo Pete, by ducimus

Inspired by the nemises from the book and movie, "run silent, run deep".

Spawns every 4 days in the bungo Suido area, and takes bout 2.5 to 3 days to finish his patrol route. This destroyer is equiped with, 2 DC racks, 2 K guns, highly sensitive hydrophones and sonar, and is elite in crew rating. Unless your crazy good, or just plain crazy, it would be best to avoid him. Remember, "the Akikaze never misses!"

Historical Note, the Real Akikaze is a name of a singlur ship from the a Minekaze class of destoryers:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minekaze_class_destroyer
http://www.combinedfleet.com/akikaz_t.htm
http://pwencycl.kgbudge.com/M/i/Minekaze_class.htm

Subsequenly, i used the Minekaze data files when creating the "akikaze destroyer"

NOTE:
On a spot of luck, Japan has no destroyer escorts in the stock sea rosters. By creating this unit as a destroyer escort, ive removed the possiblity of it being accidently spawned elsewhere in the campaign game since there are no "Generic destroyer escort" entries in the MIS files that im aware of. WIth this mod, Japan has only one destroyer escort.

File structure:
###############

/DATA/SEA/NDE_AKIKAZE/*.*
--------------------------
- Ship support files, inheirts model from Minekaze.

/DATA/ROSTER/NAMES.CFG
----------------------
- Added "Akikiaze Destroyer" so the ship is properly named in game

/DATA/ROSTER/JAPAN/SEA/DEAKIKAZE.CFG
---------------------------
-cfg file assigning the unit to japans inventory

/DATA/CAMPAIGNS/CAMPAIGN/JAP_HARBOR_TRAFFIC.MIS
----------------------------
-Places Bungo pete in the BUngo Suido area

KNOWN ISSUES AND COMPATIABLITY:
################################

No known issues, should work with any mod or modpack that does not alter the Jap harbor traffic.mis file.

Cool! I saw the movie and was wondering where are the Bungo Starights.... I didnīt know this was real, I thought it was just a movie.

Good work!

The bungo suido (aka bungo channel, or bungo strights) is real.
http://laurel.forest.net/tidesend/images/products/folios/932.jpg

The "Akikaze" as presented in the book and movie, was fictional. The real akaikaze wasnt anything like it was presented in the movie and was also the scene of a recorded war crime in the execution of prisoners on its aft deck.

Strictly speaking, we need a Jap sub and a decoy with a shallow draft if we are going for a Run Silent, Run Deep 'Bungo Straits' scenario, as those who know the movie will recall. :D

Nevertheless, very cool.

Yeah well, its a mod, compromises have to be made somewhere. Besides for that scenario to work, wed have to have a submerged AI sub that can shoot torpedos. Good luck gettign that to work! :rotfl:

Sorry i missed your question, but yup. Thats how i originally tested it. I created a single mission first. After i had established everything was working correctly, i placed him an the campaign game, took a stroll over to the bungo straights, and he seriously kicked my ass. Calm seas, less then 300 feet of water, and he nailed me on the first pass. The Akakazi never misses :rotfl:

FAdmiral

Well now, I wouldn't say never. I just tried it in my new mission and it
performed magnificient. Of course, I was in good depth but he still had
a location on me most of the time. He was at a loss when I hid under a
merchant dead in the water (my old SH3 trick) but when I came out again,
he picked me right up. I wanted to see how good he was on the surface so
I came up. He immediately rammed me and did NOT self-destruct???????
This is the first time I have seen that happen !! Did you make this new DE
indestructable? He didn't seem to take any damage at all. It destroyed me
thought big time....

JIM

Oh hes quite distructable. I didnt do anything to alter his hitpoints. Probably a fluke he didnt self destruct. He rammed me too, but i was shooting back with a rear mounted deck gun.

FAdmiral
05-05-07, 11:22 PM
Actually, I sorta made him ram me. I was at PD when he started a run so
I turned sharp & surfaced right in front of him. He hit me just aft of the
conning tower at a good clip dropping DCs. The DE went up and over me
like I have seen before many times BUT this time, it didn't break in half and
explode like ALL the other DDs did. (and I do mean ALL of the others)
Something was different, no fire or anything did I observe. You must have
changed something cause I NEVER had that happen before !!!

Very cool indeed. I wonder, can you make this spawn randomly with the rest of the game? In other words, spawn with any convoy randomly throughout the Pacific. Would be cool to have this so you REALLY do not know how good the escort could be. Something to really keep you down with every convoy because you just don't know:o

Yeah you could, but you'd really want to change his sensor arrangements before you did that. Right now, as is, im not sure youd want him in the rest of the game. Basically i gave him the best sensors the japanese have in the AI_sensors.dat file, for the entire length of the war. His passive sonar has a detection radius of like 9KM with a sensitivty of like .07. His active sonar is basically the JP version of the Q sonar, very Sensitive, and has an downward angle of 135 degrees. So unless your in a balao, there aint no way your getting under his beam.

Ordinarly i wouldnt create an escort like that, but the only reason i did was because he was unique. Slap a crew rating of 3 or 4 on him, and he's death incarinate. Just a heads up is all, if you want to see more of him, id tone him down some.

Yes, the first thing I noticed about BP was that his active sonar footprint was
larger than any other DD I had seen before. It was very hard to keep out of
it to avoid detection. His also displayed a very good snake s-pattern when he
searched for subs. His ability to ram me and not take any visable damage still
has me puzzled. Was that a fluke or maybe part of the uber makeup??

After reading this post and I watched Run Silent Run Deep. Good movie. Get to see the radars for a few moments. You get to see how cramped the sail was. Nice shots of the real deal. Anyway, yes, tone the fellow down some and have him randomly spawn in convoys....if possible! As of now, I feel we get more dumb DD then the smart ones. For those that install it will never really know whats in store for them so surfacing to use the cannon on the convoy will be a crap shoot at best. Leave the Hell Spawn in the straights and insert his less nasty brother to spawn at random in convoys. Unpredictability is a great part of this simulation. At this point, I get inside a convoy and just sink em all without one DC dropped. With SH3/GWX, the DD were very good and if I was to sink 3 vessels and make my escape, I considered myself lucky. So this fellow mixed in with the better DD mod would probably be all we need for a better simulation of convoy attack. What I'm asking then is one mod, better DD and one randomly HELL FIRE DD that will take everything you know to escape:up:

yes, wait in port before loading this mod. Bungo Pete is placed the Jap_harbor_traffic.mis file. He will appear no where else.

Anyway, he will not appear anywhere else in the campaign unless you toss in "generic destroyer escort" in some of the RND layers. He will not appear in any single mission, unless you specificly place him, or "generic destroyer escort" in it. As the Akikazi is the ONLY destroyer escort in the japanese roster file, and no other calls "generic destroyer escort" is being made by the game.

I think I'm starting to turn into PJ Richardson. I've become obsessed with killing ol' Pete.

Unfortuantely, I'm not doing to well. Three attempts, three deaths for me. The first time, I weas dead before I even knew what happened  The second time, I managed to prolong my death by a few minutes. This past attempt, I actually got a mutual kill...I sank him, but I suffered critical damage to pretty much my entire sub. I staggered away at 2 kts, just a floating bullseye for Japanese airplanes when the sun rose.

If anyone actually manages to kill Pete, I'd be interested to know what stratagies you used...I'm gonna load my save and try again ;)

FAdmiral
05-06-07, 11:21 PM
Well, I made another run at ole Pete, not for the sake of killing him
but to see if he would be damaged by ramming me. I let him do it
7 times. I suffered some damage each time but he came thru the
ordeal unhurt as far as I could tell. The last ram (7th) finished me
but he was going strong. His surface gun action was nothing to
write home about so I got to last the full 7 rams...

Yes and no. "Bungo pete" is a nickname of the captian of a "Akikaze destroyer". A fictious destroyer type, inspired by the name of a real destroyer of the Minekaze class. (see links in orginal post).

The character "bungo pete" exists only in the book and movie, "Run silent, run deep". with reputation of being supernatural, or super human because of his ability to sink us subs. In real life, there was no bungo pete, nor an Akikaze class destroyer.

On he came, approaching quickly, Suddenly Without Warning, he hit a
