Sorry if it's already been answered but, could U-boats sit motionless on the sea floor IRL (within safe depth range)? If so, doesn't the positive bouyancy in GWX defeat it? :hmm:

Well, I am not sure if it is seamans yarn or not, but my grandfather told me that they sat once on the bottom of the Nordsee (in a Type VII/C) for a couple of hours whilst doing some repair on one of the instrument panels - as long as you touch down gently on a sandy bottom it shouldn't be a problem, though depending on the undewrwater current it might not be a totally motionless. I know for a fact that modern submarines are more than capable of sitting on the seafloor as it has been demonstrated by the Russians on numerous occasions during the cold war...

As you can 'hover' on the spot at any depth with a sub the bouyancy in R/L is not an issue (just the skill of the crew)

Most definitely yes....the way to do it in game is to bring the boat to a standstill as near to the seabed as possible then adjust it a few extra metres and it should settle without causing any damage :arrgh!:

Whilst this may be true for diesel electric submarines, I believe nuclear powered subs cannot sit on the sea bottom because it blocks an inlet for saltwater which I understand is used to produce clean air and drinking water inside the sub.

And you can sit on your bunk reading French porn while you smoke your pipe and listen to your records.

it is mainly used to cool the reactor but doesn't need to be working 24/7 - you can safely switch it off when your tanks are full... ;) Besides, not all nuclear subs have that inlet on their belly...

As to the original question: yes, WW2 submarines could and did sit on the seafloor. In real life this also had the positive effect of depth-charge blast being deflected and absorbed by the sand. At the invasion of the Philippines one U.S. S-boat survived a lengthy counterattack by doing just that - sitting on the bottom.

Although, I've read more than one account of subs getting stuck in the mud.

Seabed mud can have a suction-cup like effect.

Yes, I read where the crew had to run fore and aft to get the sub to break the muds grip.

Now that must have been a sight to behold!:rotfl:

Yeh, I remember reading about it too. I think it was in Iron Coffins (or in Das Boot as I only have those two books. :rotfl:).

It was in "Iron Coffins". I am just reading it (again). They had a hard time to escape the mud... "Alle mann voraus...." "Alle Mann achteraus..."

Aces Of The Deep had that effect. I had one crew die because I couldn't get unstuck and ran out of air.:dead:

Realy? I wish there was a 2007 subsim with those features. I never played SH1 but I am told that you cannot 'see' ships in radar because they are behind islands... Even not when they are in front because of radar noise from island... hard to believe...

Remarkable that in a 2007 'sim' you can even hear ships with sonar through islands...

In AOD the DDs also had a hard time detecing you when you were lying on the botton, except, when they knew where you were before you laid the boat down on the botton. In shallow waters I managed to evade DDs by lying on the ground before they detected me. The I waited till the passed and moved on. That way I could even sneak through the Channel in 1944. Took longer than going around the British Isles though :damn:

could U-boats sit motionless on the sea floor IRL

Sure, most of them still are doing that today:hmm:

j/j couldn't resist:up:

Been tempted to say something similar for a while but didn't have the proverbials :D
