View Full Version : Place names
Compared to the screenshots of SH1 at http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=513929&postcount=36 the SH4 map seems rather empty.
I was thinking about how to fill it, as well as possible uses for my mission edition API (see http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=113360 to be released as soon as sourceforge approves my project request), and I had an idea.
Does anyone know of a database of place names in the Pacific (capes, seas, straits, islands, etc) that includes name as well as coordinates? With that, it would be easy to automatically add them to the campaign files.

I would just look for a good map of the Pacific. That would likely have more place names than you could possibly want to use.
Here's one online:

Yes, but I'm lazy :D
Starting from a map I would take a maybe a minute for each name, and my time is limited. Give me a list of names and coordinates and in five to ten minutes I'll have a program capable of importing thousands of names.
I'm sure there is such a thing out there. There are many for towns and cities.
I don't know how your program works - I keep meaning to have a look at it but haven't got around to it yet...:D, but here is some stuff to maybe keep in mind with this idea:The names you see for ocean names are tied to .DDS files. For towns and cities they are tied to the various port and harbour models.
I think CCIP tried adding lots of extra names by using the map labels function but it seemed to cause problems after a while.
Go for it, though. The map is very sparse..at the moment. ;)

Check out Google Earth at http://earth.google.com/
Its a free downloadable interactive satellite map of the earth. In short it's an awesome tool to aid with campaign building. Much of what you're looking for is there. However, many place names have changed in the last 60 years, so you'll need to reconcile old names with new names, but that's a snap with a websearch engine.
What about at least making enemy ports red?
