Just curious, has anyone checked if the subs turning capability jives with real life? I seem to read a lot about US subs firing off their bow tubes and then quickly turning around and firing off the stern tubes. I am curious if anyone knows how long it should take and if SHIV is accurate in that respect. Obviously it is heavily speed dependant.

I think one problem is that real subs could turn one screw for headway, and the other for sternway to turn tighter.

Thats a good point. It is hard to judge time from a book but it seems they are turned around in time to get another good shot at the same targets, and thats usually after the convoy knows a sub has fired at them.

Is it possible to be able to mod an option to change the direction of your screws? You should have two speed buttons to click, one for each screw.

As with reversing engines to slow the boat faster, that was very rarely used in real life. Giving the order and having it translated to the engine rooms takes time, and usually works adversely in a combat situation.

As for real-life turning rates:
http://hnsa.org/doc/attack/

Speed Rate
4 knots .45 deg/sec
8 knots 1 deg/sec

As you see, at full speed underwater it takes about 1-1/2 minutes to turn just 90 degrees; 6 minutes for a full 360-degree turn.
