Yes. We are all that stupid. How much more stupid are Australians for doing whatever we tell them?

Enough anti-American stuff. Look at your own nation before calling Americans stupid. Ass.

Hey, I wasn't calling Americans stupid, I was merely asking the question. Our government is a completely different thing and not in question here. Nor was I seriously implying Americans are stupid.
Are Americans capable of lightening up?

I thought it was a funny video anyway.

Yeah, you're probably right. But for some reason the world loves to think Americans are stupid (maybe ignorant is a better word here). Most people I know have a 'stupid American' story to tell, which usually involve unfathomable ignorance and lack of an ability to 'catch on'. How did this stereotype evolve?

Man you need to take a chill-pill!

Seriously I don't think Americans are at all stupid, you could ask me where places are in America and I wouldn't have a clue. I think that Americans are probably easier targets because they seem to love a TV camera. Show one to me and I'd run a mile, because I'd know it was a wind-up.

@ wastegate

So you decided to read a thread with a title like this, despite your views on other people's perception of America and comedy relating to it, only to insult the original poster?

And you're not the "1st, tenth or 100th" person to come from the "Europe wouldnt be crap without the US" camp.

Tchocky

Where does the stereotype come from....hmm.

Many people confuse American ignorance with American stupidity. What do I mean by ignorance? Nothing bad. If i want to go skiing, or sun myself on the beach, I can't do those things at home. I have to hop on Ryanair and head for a different country and possibly have to brush up on a different language (up until recently I'd have to change my money, God I love the euro :)). Europeans travel more out of sheer necessity. So you end up absorbing other ways of living, if even by accident. Also, look at Belgium. If you want to, you can drive across Belgium in a couple of hours. it takes a couple of days to drive across some American states.
So what about America? Right now I live about two hours from a brilliant ski resort, a wonderful beach etc etc. Being so vast, you can experience a lot of things the world has to offer without meeting anyone who isnt a fellow citizen. That's neither good nor bad, it's just scale.
Some European types point at the low proportion of Americans with passports. So what? A lot of the stuff we need them for, Americans don't!

I was flying back to Boston in January, and was going through Amsterdam (cheap flights ). Anyways, I met a soldier on his way to Kuwait. Friendly guy, about 19. We talked for a while, and I said it was a shame that he didnt have a longer layover, to go and see the city. He didn't have a passport. I felt really sorry for him, if his plane was delayed he couldn't leave the airport. Also, if you're volunteering to fight for your government, you should automatically get a passport, in my opinion.
I asked him how long he was going over for. He replied "Until August...wait, you guys have, like, months here, yeah?".
This guy had never been out of Ohio, he never had to know anything about Europe/ROW. This "americans are stupid" schtick is getting old. (but thats no reason to get stroppy, guys)

Your comments on Australia, and that you think we have a British way of life aren't doing you any good, especially in such a thread. In fact, Australian living standards are much closer to American, since the sociogeographical construct is very similar.
So thanks for adding yourself to the ignorant American list.

I wasn't attacking you with my post, nor any of your fellow countrymen, so why you insult me is beyond me.
Why don't you go and get one of your guns from under your pillow and take your anger out on some bottles.

I understand where wastegate is coming from. Having lived in Europe as a member of the US military, I knew exactly why I was there. Alot of American bashing from nations who haven't accomplished near what the USA has. The USA has an operational satellite nav system, top notch university and research facilities, gone to the moon, the major contributor to the space station, etc. Can actually get there from our own launch vehicles. Not bad for a nation of "idiots". If this stuff makes us idiots, what does that make people from your nations? Where your countries have accomplished none of this stuff.

With all that said, this ignorant type of American bashing is not a totality of what people from other nations comprise. There are actually mature and well thought people in Europe, wastegate, despite some of the foolishness you see on an internet forum. Really, there are. ;)

Europeans are generally more worldly and better informed people than Americans on the whole.
American bashing usually isn't the product of ignorance, it's playful piss taking. Everyone knows what and how much Americans have achieved, so people calling Americans stupid isn't in ignorance of this. But somewhere along the line, Americans have gotten a reputation for being especially gullible... or maybe it is because people like to test an American's gullibility the most. It's just fun at America's expense, because it's easy to take advantage of an American's ignorance.

In the eyes of amny global citizens, Americans (and I'm grossly generalising to illustrate mass opinion) tend to only know their own country, and naturally assume any significant achievements are theirs. They think this makes them the greatest country on Earth, and believe this, even if it means closing their eyes and ears to anything in the contrary.

Taking the piss out of Americans is not a black hearted act to discredit a country. Everyone still knows most Americans are good natured and industrious people.

No you are right, we all know that. It's just that over here in Europe we can laugh at ourselves, and our countries - and it doesn't hurt at all. If this video was about a dumb Brit we'd ALL be laughing at it, and that's the REAL difference between us and America

I agree Sea Demon, most folks that I have met from Europe and Asia and Australia
have been very decent thoughtful people. I'm just tired of being beat up. Like gdogghenrikson said, if their nations were in trouble the first call would go to my country.

Oh yeah well Canada succesfully repelled an American invasion in 1812. HA! We so own you guys.

But I don't see what an American space program based off of Third Reich missile technology has to do with the intelligence and intellectual breadth of the average American mind.

And another thing to bear in mind is that if the US wants to be number one in the world, they're gonna have to live with being made fun of. I think that the major reason so much "stupid american" humour exists is because of the arrogance that you often get wafting off of American TV and from a number of its people. Yet there seems to be an awfully high level of ignorance about the world in there too.

"This is the best place in the world to live in and I've never left Texas before in my life!"

Americans often have superior views of their own. But in the end its just fun. If you can't laugh at yourselves then you are not very secure. I'm a Canadian and we laugh at ourselves all the time. And where would British culture be without that self depricating tradition so oft demonstrated in Monty Python and its legacy seen in programs of today?

I think that the response to this by certain Yankee members here is characteristic of why so many of us non-Americans love taking jabs at the US. Its like making fun of that guy in school that is so serious he gets mad everytime you make a joke about him.

Besides Americans are such easy marks. Rick Mercer proved that when he asked George Bush about his opionion of Canadian Prime Minister "Jean Poutine" when he was on the election trail in 2000.

The first sentense is in reply to the stupidity of stating military achievements as being justification of the superiority of ones nation. And the second sentense is also a statement of how putting a man on the moon and having a space program is a silly way to counter a discussion about the alleged ignorance of americans in general.

As always, your country is, the most popular one north of the US.

After all your country gave us Dudley Doright.

Doesn't feel good does it?
Thank you for speaking for the entire world.:yep:

Guys, we have a new record at hand here. Three pages of pointless national penis measuring and nobody has mentioned the French yet... wait... damn it! :damn: :damn: :damn:

Anyone picks on the French, I'm locking this thread and jacking them with the Medic avatar for life.

Think about it, people! This could be you!

Yes, Sir, Admiral Sir. It's good to see an American laying down the law. A Texan even.

Note to self: No picking on the French in this thread.

There are plenty of opportunities to dish the French. I saw a pretty good one in an episode of Frasier just an hour ago too.

Its America's turn today!;)

Proper thing Neal. All countries brought up here have had both shining moments and shameful. As a Canadian I freely admit that our world presence today is not what it once was (and even then, it was never much) and my government has made some strange decisions. But I am enormously proud of our contributions to the world, whether they have been paid with time, money, or lives.

I find that the stupid:normal ratio is more or less the same for most countries

The difference being most nations dont elect one of the stupid as president.

No you are right, we all know that. It's just that over here in Europe we can laugh at ourselves, and our countries - and it doesn't hurt at all. If this video was about a dumb Brit we'd ALL be laughing at it, and that's the REAL difference between us and America
Quoted for truth.
And in the opinion of this dumb brit -
Too much 'don't tread on me' attitude where none is plainly necessary.

America has so many interests around the world today it's hardly surprising that other nations poke the finger of fun at them, especially so here with such a diverse and representative membership.

At least your ridicule is mostly current... ours is based on century's of idiocy and untimely foolishness, for no other reason than empire building - where is the British empire now, eh?
(edit: Now before you go and get too hasty with that avatar, Neal, I'm going to mention the French, along with the English, as an illustration of how silly we all are being; besides I spent too much time on this and it'd be a shame to waste it, given that I started this somewhere around post 41 of this thread :lol:)

I mean, look at us roast beefs' (pomms, chalky's, socker hooligans -I'm most proud of that particular accolade ) and those cheese eating surrender monkeys... (jk) I mean the French, of course. We've had a standing feud for longer than you Americans have had a country for god's sake. You were even a part of a war where you were quite content to have our worstest enemy (back then) help out fighting against us, just so the French could have a dig at the English by influencing them to loose America. (simplification)
See what a hundred years war with another nation gets you? lol Stupid military marches and anniversary's of things that happened so long ago that our collective history needs a double take to figure out what all of the fuss was about.
I like the French, they make much better wine than we do, amongst many other things, but I can still laugh at them, and with them for old times sake without getting all hot and bothered by this useless rivalry.

We don't have wars with France any more (last time I checked anyway) but we both have a healthy sense of humour towards each other (kind of like a comfortable old pair of shoes - you know you ought to bin 'em, but you've just had them for so long, and they really are very comfey...) as is plainly illustrated by the various stereotypes bandied about by both nations concerning each other... not that we need mention them here! no no no! lol lest we precipitate the verbal forum equivalent of 'Le Bombe Neutron' ! :rotfl:thus adding to the already dangerously overcharged fog of national pride which for some reason has leaked into this otherwise light-hearted thread and who's acrid fumes are threatening to strip the lining off the back of my throat if I breathe too deeply :arrgh!: Perhaps one of you accommodating chaps could open a window, then we can all relax a bit?

Wow, what a reaction for a simple, heavily edited comic video!

For every person they got with a response that aired, there were probably hundreds who said hang on, this is a setup. certainly no needa go off the deep end about it.

Well-known fact - aussies enjoy taking the p!ss outta just about every other country in the world, especially the kiwis. Been like that for god knows how long. Kiwis first, then poms, then americans, then most of europe, yada yada yada. This video is merely an extension of that! Its not as though its limited to other countries either, often when meeting people you needle at them till you get a reaction, THEN make friends.

Really, nothing offeisive is intended by the video, nor Boris' post.

If an insult comes from an australian, its probably light-hearted, especially when its a generalisation!:yep:

lighten up people!

Here is something that might stir things up a little......;)

It seams that there are not many western countries that have a lower estimated national IQ average than the USA.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_and_Global_Inequality

A interesting thing to note is that the IQ of the country of some of the people involved in the study(s) is even below that the USA.
