View Full Version : GWX Skin Pack File
HI Guys,
After Installing GXW 1.3 I had a read through the manual and saw that the gwx guys recommended the GWX Skin Pack ,
Followed the link to filefront and downloaded it.
So I have a single file 164mb in size but no readme.
Is this file usable and if so where does it go ?
I also have the latest sh3commander , not yet Installed,
Am I right in thinking that the skin file goes in one of its folders ?
Are the two compatible ?
Thanks Guys,
PS: I got into sub sims by chance (flight sims since 1999) after playing this I may never go back !

Just extract the archive then copy the date folder in the skin pack and paste it over the date folder in SH3Cmdr's program folder. It should be about 1.6GB unpacked.
Make sure that SH3C is rolled back & that you are in port.
EDIT - On the off chance that you don't have it, you need 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) It's free and handles all formats of archive.

What does the skin pack do?
:o I surprised Pen.
The GWX Skin packs adds date based historical skins to all merchants, destroyers, escorts & battleships.
Give me a mo and I'll find the proper thread.

After it is installed just right click on the archive and you will see 7-Zip in the menu, just choose 'extract to....' the click OK.
Danlisa,
Do I extract the archive to a new folder and then copy the date folder from it into the SH3C prog folder, ?
or is it like winzip where you can extract what you want to where you want ?
Sorry if im making heavy weather out of this , I blame it on my age !
Cheers Mate

so.....the GWX skin pack isn't included in GWX?
if you're gonna call it a GWX skin pack why not just include it in GWX?

1)It was developed between the release of the 1.02 & 1.03 patches so it could not be included in the main GWX release.
2)It's unpacked size is too prohibitive to allow all users to d/l it as part of the main mod. (1.6GB)
3)Its proper use requires SH3Commander, it cannot be correctly used as a JSGME mod or as a standard skin pack. All the skins are date based meaning that the correct skin for the correct ship will be displayed/used at the correct time.
4)What's the point of including it if the end GWX user does NOT use SH3Cmdr.
I hope that clears that up.

Is there any way to use the skin pack without SH3commander?

Of course. In my opinion it's better to use it with SH3Cmd as that way you avoid messing up your game. If I remember correctly thout in the readme file that comes with the skin pack there are instructions how to use it with SH3Cmd. In any case download the pack and follow the instructions:
1. Put JSGME.exe in C\Program Files\SH3Cmd
2. Run JSGME and generate the MODS folder.
3. Put the skin pack in the MODS folder
4. Enable it via JSGME and you're ready to go.

 Um, Mel. The question was 'can it be used without SH3Cmdr'?:rotfl:
The only other way is to pick and choose the skins that you want and arrange them into the correct format for a JSGME mod. This requires knowledge of the file structures needed.

I have not dared to start meddling with skins - yet :)

It's tricky I'm affraid as there is more than 1 skin per vessel in the pack, unless you choose which ones you want, it's pointless making a JSGME ready pack.
May I ask, why do you not want to use SH3Cmdr?

I suppose its because I'm running SH3 patched+GWX1.03 and its running fine with some skins and mods,(minus the longer wakes mod Grrrrrrr:nope: )And I'm of the opinion if its not broke don't fix it,SH3Cmdr gets such high praise I really should download it but I dont want to over complicate things, and I don't really know enough about it to really know if it will make that much of a difference to my gaming experience. What do you reckon?your unbiased and qualified opinion would help plus you could explain what it actually is.

SH3Cmdr is a standalone program which enables alot of extra features and options. As it is standalone you can choose to use it on a particular patrol or not.
There is so much that SH3Cmdr adds, it's hard to recall it all but you can find the readme for SH3Cmdr here - http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/SH3Cmdr%20Help.html and you can see a screenie here - http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/screenshots/SH3CMDR.gif.
It's at least worth the time to d/l & install to see what the fuss is about.:D If you don't feel that it warrants keeping then uninstall it.
I hope this helps.

Couldn't do that, there is already a SH3Cmdr Skin pack for non GWX users.:rotfl:
Okay, I have the skin pack, the IX open hatch mod and the d/c shake mod sitting on my dest top and my sub is at the equator planning a 4th run at a tough 3 DD 1 Swawn convoy. 6 torps left.
If I survive this last attack can I be forgiven if I just warp back to base to try the new mods I have?

As long as your in base I don't think the game will give a 'flying feck' :D
