Hi guys,

I am not a very good U Boat commander and keep getting sunk!

I know i will get better with practice but for now i would like to edit my sub so that it is undetectable while in Silent Running mode.

Is this easy to do.

I know how to edit files etc but don't know where to start.

Appreciate any help or advice.

Not really.:-?

It's not the sub that you have to edit but rather the sensors of the vessels trying to detect you.

I will warn you now, the sensor files are easy to work with but not easy to maintain a balance. They are by far the most extensively tested area of SH3 because of this fact. It's only too easy to go from a balanced sensor routine to something that is either impossible or too easy to make the game enjoyable.

I suppose the easiest solution would be to put a depth limit on the sensors. That way you know that if you are at x depth, you are safe. Not really any fun though.

It's probably easier to become a better captain.:hmm:

Good luck & if you undertake this, BACKUP EVERYTHING.;)

The best way to find out is experimentation. Your ability to be detected is not just based on the noise you make when running silent. The file you need to play with is sensors.dat which determines how sensitive and accurate the DD's sensors will be.

I'm not sure if it is possible to make yourself undetectable when silent running using this file without making yourself undetectable at any noise level. there may be someone with a little more experience.

Hav you checked out the newbie tutorials thread? It gives some great advice about how to keep out of the escorts way and after some practise it's very possible to get a great gaming experience out of GWX without changing any of the settings.

The development and test team on GWX spent a lot of time getting the balance right IMHO.

Now, the talk about sensors just made me realise how well sensors in GWX work. Once again congrats' to the GWX team for providing a great experience with this most sensitive part of the game. Getting to the point, what I really like about GWX sensors is the fact that escort behavior is unpredictable, like in real life. It happened to me to see DDs pass right over me while I was silent running shallow at some 20 meters, and the DDs never knew I was there, while in other cases they picked me up when silent at 50+ meters. One can never know how an escort will react, and this is the main challenge of GWX. There's no robotic behavior, the kind of "do this move and you'll always get this result". Great work!

Do not get into situations where you'll be the hunted.

That said, run silent, run deep. Use silent running and crawl speed, do NOT exceed 100 rpms on gauges; maximum 2 knots/hour but 1 knot/hour is better. No turns to exceed 10-degrees rudder, but less degrees the better. Try to slither away putting distance and depth between you and the depth charges. If you have "Bolds" launch a couple and make a slow, gradual 30-degree course change. This a long, slow process and the warships have to give up looking for you.
