This leads me to think that they are grey on top and black (near black) under water mark

Its also interesting to see those real subs "front stablizers" positions when are surfaced differ from SH4 :hmm:

There were a number of paint schemes for submarines-

It appears the MS9 paint scheme (black) was in use starting January 41 and used until 1943-
