You know i have begun to love SH4 even with its multitude of faults and glitches, and bugs and more bugs.....Having AA was a great boost for me plus the reso fix did help.....BUT what I cannot undestand is this.......
Beauty and the beast...
Here's beauty looks like it could be an Oil painting, done to glorify some Admirals Office as a reminise of the good times and camaraderie of the Pacific war in Submarines....
The beauty.

And then you get the downright "Ugly" of a flying submarine in 15m winds and howling winds, the waves are an awesome sight to behold, the physics wonderful, its a moving undulating mass of water with "Almost realistic action". Shame about the submarines physics.....Straight line anyone???
The Ugly....

As you can clearly see my submarine is almost 95% out of the water in a trough.
Bugs I can live with for now...As I'm sure they will be fixed...
This is just unforgivable (Maybe a to harsh a word) but damn I would expect a Simualtion that is 100% in or on the surface of a body of water to at least have a real physical representation of the forces acting on that object when on the surface.
My father was a merchant seaman on the "Manchester Liners" for 12 years he has seen this game and quite frankly he has laughed at the non existant pitch of any of the objects that float.....EXCEPT for the bloody Life raft....anyone notice this has real motion as regards wave influence???

I think it's kinda cool. I'm jealous that you know how to make your sub do a belly flop. Tell me your secret.
You are right. That first photo is simply gorgeous. It looks just like an oil painting. Luckily, I spend most of my time inside the sub so I don't think I would even know if my boat was doing that or not so I guess ignorance is bliss after all.
I've seen a few screens of the "flying boat" strange it's never happened to me.
My S boat seems to ride along fairly normal, maybe its only certain classes in
certain conditions.

Shad your probably correct its only when you get into a real force ten that this glitch happenes when the height of the wave and its trough is higher/lower than the boat.....From what I have observed all the submarines have a "Touch" of bouyancy, they will move up and down as if in a swell but its very minimal....When your boat is in a big storm it becomes apparent that this up/down is just not enough to compensate for the high/low point of the BIG waves. Thus you start to ride on "Air".....

Yeah it looks very good in the 1st screeny D6. Didn't SHIII have that same "Flying Sub" problem at first? It's been so long that I can't remember... CRS I guess. LOL Even with GWX I still see the "Flying Sub" om occasion with high seas, though not as bad as what you showed us.
AND NOW.... Will somebody please shootme! I took the plunge today and bought SH4, even tho I said I was going to wait. It's not installed yet but will probably be in the not too distant future. ;) it's all you guys fault for showing screehshots and doing mods...... But I forgive you all. :arrgh!: :rotfl:

Yep, the "ugly" is pretty ugly :( But I don't think I've ever seen anything quite that bad when watching my boat or any other ship with the external cam in real-time.
Yet I have seen my boat and many other ships "airborne" like that, and every time it was caused by going to external cam, pausing, then moving the camera in for the view I wanted. Not always, but often, the ship will be totally out of the water. I think it depends on how rough the seas are.
If I then un-pause, and instantly re-pause, the ship is back in the water where it belongs.
Did you pause for that screenie, then move the camera somewhere else to compose the shot?

I suffer the same ugly thing (flying USS Tambor):

Annoying... but I have to recognize that with 1.2 patch, I can finally enjoy the game.
Did you pause for that screenie, then move the camera somewhere else to compose the shot? Yes, I did.
Waiting for 1.3 :)

In real life they would probably dive in that rough weather wouldn't they? I would anyway to save the crew a battering.

Good point- Thanks for the example. Now if you look at the "flying-fish" I wonder if the area below is actually the bottom of the sub's "hit box" for collision detection, etc. I say this since I was coming in close to a beach @ 2knts, had plenty of room since the shore was a steep slope, and every time a light swell went by my sub it hovered, staying pretty-much in the same place in the trough, but my keel would take damage, even thou there still was room between the sandy bottom and my bow as confirmed by watching this via F11 cam.
Obviously I've no idea for sure but to me it looks like there is no relationship between the water and the sub. It would appear that the sub's depth is independent of the waters actual level (a level which can get skewed disproportionately in bad weather).
In bad weather the waves are dipping the water level visually (in order to show the motion and height of the weather), but the actual water level remains the same constant that you are currently sat at according to your depth meter.
To anyone who's not played the game is just reading this, the subs do move realistically, and don't look out of place. The aforementioned problem doesn't happen all that often and it isn't a game breaker.
It's a shame that it does occur however. I wonder whether it's a processing problem, whether it would take up too much of the CPU/GPU to simulate? I do hope it's something they can at least remedy with a semi-fix.

I remember when this topic was discussed in the SH3 forums that the consensus opinion is yes it would be incredibly CPU/GPU intensive to simulate individual waves and the physics of such and how they acted upon your boat, not to mention the other boats in the scene.
I agree it looks pretty wonky, but calling it "unforgiveable" is pretty harsh. But hey, we all have our opinions. :sunny:

Pity, Wave Race 64 had it :D
I'm sure there is a way of doing it efficiently but I'll admit it's not something I lose sleep over.

Bingo! Flightsims can simulate turbulence. Just need to sync "the bumps" with the (wave) graphics, or decrease the squareness/size of the hitbox.
Good to know there's another subsim fan up in the grim North of England Deep Six (I'm in Stockport), doubtless you too are disappointed with the closure of Birkenhead Historic Warships eh?

Would v_sync have to do anything with that happening because I don't seem to have that problem and I have it enabled :hmm:

In real life they would probably dive in that rough weather wouldn't they? I would anyway to save the crew a battering.
It would depend on the mission. If it wouldn't slow them up too much or drain the battery when they might need it soon, they would dive. I have read of USN boats running on the surface with everyone below and keeping watch through a raised 'scope. The problem was that the exaggerated motion through the 'scope made even the strongest stomachs feel ill. British boats couldn't use the 'scope while surfaced unless the engines were stopped as the vibration made the view too blurred.

Nothing to do with vsynch. That's all about refresh rates.

What the heck are you guys doing flank in a 7 sea state ?
I havent seen this yet. Bet its a little rough on the crew.

Good point, but also a great productivity test:
If they are not bitching/complaining, then they must be in their racks ;)
Kinda like the trim indicator settings on an airliner in autopilot-cruise.
If the trim is moving up and down very slightly, you know the flight attendants are moving that trolley around.
