Ran into this last night.

Ill try to explain this briefly.

I had attacked a "huge euro liner" and hit her with 3 torps on her starbord side 4th one missed.

The liner came to a halt and listed badly but remained afloat.

"Dinners ready" comes the call from the kitchen, so I saved and left the game.

Later I returned loaded and went about setting up a stern shot by swing around 180 degrees raised scope and took the shots. Well duh... the escorts were right freakin there. They found me fast and sunk me.

So I re-loaded (yuh Im a wuss) and had a brilliant plan, go deep sail past the liner and take the stern shots from the other side (away from the escorts). Sooo I went deep and cruised for quite a ways when... "Honey !" the call comes from the other room. So I saved and went to attend to the Honey doo.

I returned later and loaded the save game. I immediatly recieved the message "Enemy unit destroyed" ?? Huh guess she sunk while I was taking out the trash, cleaning the deck, sweeping the porch... Wait a second, it was a save game, no time had passed !!!

So I gleefully took credit for the kill and sailed happily home. I was a little dissapointed that I dident get to execute my "brilliant" stratigy.

I dont know if it tells your right off that you sank a vessel. I hit the Yamato, with 6 torps, and she listed very heavily, then rolled over sometime later and I got the ship sunk message. You may have saved right inbetween the last torpedo hit and the time it actually sank. Did you get a look at the ship after you got the message?

See I knew I couldent make myself clear.

There were two saves the one where I just tried a stern shot and got jumped and killed never found out the results of the shots.

I reloaded and resumed from that exact same save.

The other "save" was a considerable amount of time after the last torpedo hit. Probably about 1/2 hour of game time. The state of the liner was more or less the same for both saves. Dead in the water listing but not sinking.

Upon loading the "other save" Immdeatly recieved the unit destroyed message. I confirmed it with an outside view. In fact "Rudder hard to starbord ahead full !" to avoid going down with her.

Strange, pretty weird indeed. Maybe the ship was actually destroyed, but not literally sunk, and it didnt reveal the message until you re-loaded after the last save?
I'm not sure.

I'm going to assume that the game goes ahead and automatically gives you the kill once you save file and close out the game instead of making you wait until she actually goes down. That way you get credit for the kill. Otherwise, if you closed out the game before she sank you wouldn't get the tonnage credits.
