View Full Version : [REQ] Less "water" poping out from the subs
Dear gurus of mods/devs
I reckon that pacific ocean will raise 1m per month... At this rate ports/towns will be flooded and majority of pacific islands will be under water. :know:
US subs seem to pop out gallons of water while take much less of it. :hmm:
This might be an ultra weapon used by US to allow their subs to dive in JP town centers... but is just a speculation... :)
Could someone look at the water issue please? ;)
Cheers

Do you mean this ?
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a138/CaptainCox/foam.jpg
If you mean that, its the worst (if one can call it that) graphical effects in the game...the "chunks of water" looks sort a 90s "like ball bit maps" or something.
Agree in that case...but how to fix it :hmm:

Banzai :up:
Right that :)
not only is a bit ugly but also pops out in large quantities of it...
even if you are sailing in slow gear... or stoped and a "micro wave" touch for a micro-second one of those "black" spots. It pops out "gallons" and "gallons" of "water" through it.
I do agree graphically its a monster in comparison to the water and fluid dynamics.
Would someone know how to reduce it or turn those pixeis from white to transparent (or near transparent)?

I'd definitly like to see a fix for this. I love that water comes out of the sub like that, I think its an awesome effect. What I dont like it what it looks like. Not only is there too much of it, but the color just seems wrong to me, all bright white and doesnt look fluid at all. Even changing the color to something that looks more clear would be a big improvement. Definitly the only part of the game graphically that looks lazy.

Whilst the effect is very real...The water coming from the "Limber holes" is just sea water that that has flooded the outer skin..So each time your sub gets a soaking from a big wave..then yes you should see the water streaming away from the limbers....
but yes I do agree it needs "Toning down" in it's present form it looks like soap suds from a washing machine.....Not at all watery...Also it "Glows" at night.

Yep, they're not 'pumping' it out; that whole area's hollow. It flows in, and it flows back out. If you walk on the the deck you can look down and see the water between you and the pressure hull.
I agree, though, it could have been better done.

Yeah nice effect, just needs some work:yep:
It's worst on the S-class boats. Sometimes I also think they ride a bit high in the water. If they are riding a bit high, and if they were modded to ride lower it wouldn't be as glaring.
Can't that simply be adjusted here:
[Properties]
PeriscopeDepth=14.5;meters
SnorkelDepth=15;meters
CrashDepth=40;meters
MaxDepth=61;meters
SurfaceDepth=5.257;meters <<<<<<<<<
TorpLaunchMaxDepth=30;meters
StormConditions=7,0.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]

Apparently not. I adjusted an s-18 today - made the SurfaceDepth = 0.001 and then 10.000 and there was no difference as far as I could see. I think this number may just have something to do with the depth at which sailors are shown on the bridge.

Maybe can be tweaked in a "texture" file or something....that is if its not used for something else...have to look.

Hmmm, Im thinking the game gets it's info for this from the .sim file, I see that in the tweaker the setting exists as "draughtSurfaced = 5.257" for the S-18
Haven't had a chance to test it though.
"edit" Seems to be a draughtSubmerged as well so I guess this is not for setting of ride height.

I think you're probably right. Where do I find the SH4 tweak files for the tweaker? I have the utility but I don't have stuff for SH4 yet. If I get the files I'll check into this this morning.

Just checked and I can't see any diff. I set draughtSurfaced to 2 and 20 (tried on a GATO stock setting is 5,6)
The tweak files are all included in "SH4 Modding Tools and Utilities Package " by "nvdrifter"

Some of these settings are rather mysterious, they must do something :o
Off topic here but have you all noticed in the subs .zon files regarding HP
S18 = 500
Gato = 600
Salmon, Sargo, Tambor, Porpoise = 320
Balao = 100 < WTH :hmm:
I dont know if these settings actually do anything and I dont really care about the Balao (S-18) is my fav, but that looks screwy.
"edit" well it seems the Balao zon tweak file is ref this:
// Path to the file we are changing.
Path=data\Submarine\NS_Ko_Hyoteki\jap_sub.zon
oop's
maybe bring this to nvdrifters attention.
I just tweaked the s-18 sim file to make the draught 0.001. Here's the result:

So clearly this is where we go to tweak the surface depth.

Anyhow cool that you found what it actually does.
I am thinking...you know those .ACT files in the main folder....:hmm:
"EffectManagers" and "anim"....I wonder....prob is how to open. AFAK its either "Microsoft VissualFox" or "Animation Master" files...not sure yet...anybody?

That might have a negative effect on crash-dive times.

That id assume to be an uncaught typo presumably for
balao with better hull it should read 1000 but even
at that the balance seems all wrong.
I've been playing with these settings for a couple hours...(all stop sounds like a good idea)
Appearently this skipper wrote the screenplay for the Poseidon Adventure.
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s89/shad43/surf-raisedsub-lowered.jpg
this happens if you raise the surface draught and lower the submerged draught
Clearly it will take some experimentation to get them right and it seems the two settings need to be adjusted together, also I noticed when raising the sub higher from the water that the side to side swaying motion was more pronounced, it's possible that other settings like the traverse ect could have pronounced effects as well.
But alas the whole thing is driving me nuts...so I'll leave it to Beery :D
wow, that must be one of the S boats based in Australia.....everythings upside down there...(or do my dear old Mum used to tell me)
I messed with the S-18 sim file a bit today. The surfaced draught is actually a bit low compared to the photos I've seen of S-Class subs. I adjusted it in the sim file (changed it from 5.257 to 4.957) - made her ride a little higher - just a couple of feet. It lowers the tendency of the boat to spew water out a little.
Actually the biggest problem with the S-class boats is their tendency to fly from one wave to the next in heavy seas. There's something wrong with their weight, since they just don't seem to want to fall into the wave troughs at all.

~S~ Beery, I was cot by a bete in ruff seas the other night in my S-18, I could not make her dive.
Took one hell of a pounding. Finally had to order full stop and let her sink to depth. Lost most my bridge crew:nope:
has anyone else had this happen?
Does anyone actually know the texture file used? If I had it my way I would have the texture removed - No water popping out!:D Not that my machine can play SH4 without an upgrade, but when I did try, in training mode, I thought this effect spoilt the whole feel of the game, for me anyway, wonder if it would improve fps?:-?

There are a couple of them in the "tex" file...not sure which one ...but to remove it completely would be to admit defeat...I would rather like to tone them down.
Never written a "Tweak file" but I guess the next step would be to look at the actual "Water" and not the subs...
@CaptainCox, for sure I would like to see it toned down or the texture worked on to look more realistic, especially when I have the finance to upgrade, but this could be several months, in the mean time I would like to know if it can be taken out as this may improve performance just enough to be playable for me, & possably others.:up:

Indeed. It's a great effect (theoretically) but has been implemented really badly. Sometimes i've seen it look pretty good. Others it just looks like someone has opened paintbrush and used a white spraypaint tool on the side of my boat.

Have a look at the "waterspray.dds" in the "tex" folder, better check "lo-res" as well. try to simply rename them to (waterspray1) or something, and go in and see what it does. Reinstalling here at the mo...weirdness again...

I simply tweaked the texture to make it more blurry and not as white in Photoshop.
I think it looks much nicer like this...personally.
For you guys with low end rigs...I am not 100% sure removing this will help your FPS but try by removing or renaming the "waterspray.dds" in the "tex" folders BOTH! Lo res and Normal res
Please someone test it and say what you think...if its OK I guess I could make an official release.

Ok I will release it in a more proper fashion.
OK fixed it ;)
Hehe I was just about to suggest perhaps making it a bit darker but you already did it and even released a mod! Great job! It looks so much better. Can I steal this for RFB?
Now it's clear that the bright white was distracting. I think the bow wave and other water effects have a similar problem, especially at dawn/dusk and at night - it's just too bright.
By the way, is the low res image necessary? I usually don't bother with it because I always thought it was only used when at huge distances. Is that not the case?

You are free to use any of my MOD's Beery...I am not particular with that stuff. As long as I am mentioned in small print somewhere ;)
To edit the water stuff is pretty easy and fast...I will have some lunch here and look in to it after.

Thanks. I've been looking at the one you did but the layer has me confused. All I see is white on both the old one and the replacement.

You mean in game or in Photoshop? If you mean PS you have to look in the "Alpha Chanel" that's where all the stuff is.
EDIT! been looking at the "Nose Wake" water and stuff and there is about 12-20 candidates for that :stare: :hmm: ...will take some time to sift through and find the right one...
And regarding the Lo-Res...I suspect its used in this case to make "smaller" chunks of water mixed with the "bigger" ones...looks like that anyway.

Yeah I'm looking at that but it says less than 50% of the image is visible so I can't see it or something. Weird. I'm a duffer at this alpha channel business.

I am sure the actual "Hull" skin or something like that is 20-30 bigger in size (loading etc) as for the animation of this i guess its marginal in comparison to some of the other stuff going on.

On the bow wakes, don't worry about it - I didn't mean to rope you into doing it. If you feel like doing them that's great, but if not I'll see if I can do it.
On the Photoshop thing, I just bought Photoshop Elements a week or two ago and I'm finding it less intuitive than my last Photoshop program (Photoshop LE). I wish I had the full program, as I think maybe it has greater ability to adjust alpha layers and stuff. Anyway I'll see if I can open that image up and get something to show up - then if I'm successful I'll see about the bow wave and other water stuff.
