View Full Version : [REL] Browning .50 MG v1.1a
Browning .50 MG (1.2 compatible)
---------------
Ok for your deck sweeping enjoyment comes the Browning .50 (12.7mm?) Machine Gun
This appears to have been disabled by the dev's and was left in the game.
I re-enabled it for use but it has some limitations, 1)It will not elevate high
enough to engage aircraft flying high overhead, 2)It has no target reticle so
you must lead your target with the tracers.
This should "not" be considered as a replacement for your AA guns, if you don't
normally engage aircraft then it makes a cool weapon to sink small craft, with
that in mind I included lots of ammo, it uses a 100 rd box type magazine and I
saw no reason why a skipper couldn’t have 40 or so of these stacked in the boat
somewhere.
The weapon is available for all boats but does "NOT" work well on any sub with
a "bathtub type" AA deck (it sits very low) Works nicely on the S boats.
I really think this weapon is unfinished and hopefully the Dev's will include
a proper working version in a later patch.
I've also included my S-18 Conning Tower Mod (cheat) so you can mount this for
early war patrols.
(This mod works with version 1.1 of SH4)
(This is Compatible with The Increased & Improved ammo mods)

I put this in with the mod inabler and I cant see it or fire it..What am I doing wrong???.. How do you take the screen shot from above the boat and so close???????????
I took the screenie with Shift+F2
If you installed it in your mods folder and enabled it, it should be in game...
you have to select and install it on your boat from the upgrades panel in port.
Clayp...I just d/l the mod and checked the files and installed, everything seems to be in order. You must not be selecting it as an upgrade.

I havent started anything in port yet, what should I do? I just started playing the game and have no previous sub sim experiance..Sorry....
Ok...start a career, choose your port and sub, after it loads you will be in an office, click on the sub on the desk and you will see a screen showing your subs configuration.
From here you can manage your upgrades, crewmen and torpedos...Good luck :D

Neat. The original was the M1921. The WW2 version was the M2 and the one I saw was the M3. Did the M2 have a fully shrouded barrel? I don't know, but I'm glad you think it looks good.

The one in the game is correct.

Historicly subs did their best to avoid enemy aircraft...but I noticed from this website
http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/08235.htm
that most subs were equipped with 2 50's and 2 30's
Would be cool if we had them in game.
After some web trolling I've surmised that S-Boats were never fitted with 20mm AA
they all got a single Browning, so I see why it is featured in the game.
As I've heard the S-Boat was a last minute addition to the game, that would
explain why the Browning wasen't enabled....the devs just diden't finish it. :hmm:

I don't believe the Browning M2 could be submerged and still operate, so I don't think it would have been the standard AA defense on any submarine. (The 20mm Oerliken, in fact, was not designed for submergence either, but proved fairly resilient. Barrels had to be changed frequently, however.)
Hmm, I would assume that the Browning would be removed before diving and stored below decks.
Not trying to argue with your photo but I know for a fact the subs used Brownings
or were at least equipped with them, perhaps they were only used for added cover
whilst performing certin duties on deck. :hmm:

Not saying they weren't, but I believe they were used to suplement larger caliber guns or for AA defense while in port. Later s-class subs had an AA platform and it was for a 20mm Oerliken, not a Browning .50 cal.

Shrouded barrels were not usually used on the ship board and aircraft versions of the gun. They need to disipate the heat generated. I would stay away from rust on the guns to as they were taken well care of, and a rusty weapon was not tollerated. Lots of cosmoline and oil was used to keep the guns in good shape, or the salt water would cause them to deteriorate rather quickly.

Looks like its unfinished.
I thought that on later boats the .50 cal was mounted on the deck when surfaced (if required) and then stowed before diving. If you go to the conning tower view on a Gato you can see two of them (or maybe they are .30 cal) stowed against the wall.

You wouldnt catch me turning away anything that can potentially be used as a weapon and certainly not something that IS a weapon! I run into small ships often enough and while I am not paying for torps, ports are few and far between and those tiny ships make for difficult targets IMO. Extra .50's would be a great addition to the Shark!
I did notice that my existing twin AA gun can knock a fishing boat (120 tons) about so bad it will actually stop moving or even get turned about last nite though :yep:.

this was an old mod for the v1.1 and v1.2 of the game so the mod was probably not updated to work with the newer version game but as i demonstrated, with just a little effort you can take any old outdated or non-working mod or just the mod idea and remake it yourself. not all are explained as well as this one but with some trial and error most are fairly easy to figure out.
just follow the simple steps i just laid out for you and "remake" the mod, its good to learn this stuff if you want to make mods.
you can also download the one i did for you here: http://files.filefront.com/Browning+50+Modzip/;11614166;/fileinfo.html
when i went to try the mod out i found it wasnt working for me with v1.5, not sure why but i will look into it. maybe thats why the mod was never updated.

Think they were also used to attack certain smaller vessles on the surface that didn't require and heavy weapon ( small sampan's come to mind ) and as extra cover like someone else said while on the surface while doing repairs or if stuck on the surface due to non-repairable damage away from a port to supplement there AA and or Surface Vessle defense like you said.

the japanese had little reguard for those who were defeated in battle and survived.
they felt if you didnt die in battle you had no honor and did not deserve any respect so IMO i believe they commonly commited atrocities like shooting helpless sailors in lifeboats at sea but left no witnesses around to report them.
which sub did carry twin deck guns ?
It wasnt the I-58 ill tell you that, but now only 1 japanese submarine was was in that area at that time, The I-12
http://www.combinedfleet.com/I-12.htm
read here talks about the shootings
so yea my mistake its 2 documented japanese subs Shooting lifeboats the I-8 and I-12;)
In the Book I-boat capitan, the autor (Zenji Orita) mentions that after the war he heard that about the same time close to the same place, a US sailing ship was bound from frisco to Hawaii and that the sailors say a japanese sub surfaced right next to them, obviosly they were freaked out and tought they were gonna get it, the AA guns on the sub were manned and the sub circled the sailboat 3 times, then all of a sudden all the men on the sub went below save for 3 men and they blinkered the sailship "Thats one fine ship you have there, have a good voyage" and the the sub submerged. Zenji said it must have been the I-12 for sure, he knew the capitan of the I-12 and says he was fond of sailboats
the japanese had little reguard for those who were defeated in battle and survived.

Then why is it that in early 42' the I-25 spotted a longboat loaded with survivors adrift in the mid pacific on its way to the US west coast and stopped by it, provided medical asisstance to whoever needed it, water, food a compus, directions to the nearest island and wished them well before moving along? (from book SUNK! by Hashimoto)
Have you anyidea how many times americans Machine gunned jap survivors?:-? look up mush morton, the new britan convoy massacre, etc.

there were some bad people on both sides and im not saying every boat did it but the prevailing japanese attitude was to abuse the enemy at all times and give them no comfort or respect.
all im saying is that to try and say there was only one such case of gunning down helpless sailors may be all that was witnessed by survivors and can be proven, but it does not mean it was THE only time it happened. try reading up on how american prisoners of war were treated and the life expectancy they had as captives of the japanese to understand the way japanese soldiers felt about americans.
well obviosly theres bad people on all 2 sides of a war always no exeptions, but my point is that US war atrocities were commited on large scales, larger than the documented Japanese ones, exept you never hear about them.

well i think both sides covered up much but i think it was more common on japans side but i say that because it was a cultural thing not a racial judgement thing.
japans mentality surounded around honor in a way that most americans could never understand. it was because they viewed use as having no honor they naturally felt we werent as worthy of compassion or good treatment from them. they didnt go out and deside to be cruel, but to them we were often thought of as being no better than dogs. our view of them was equally prejudiced.
anyway all i really wanted to say in the other post was that there could easily be more than one machine gunning incident so dont discount that possability just because there wasnt a witnessed event.
More like rats than dogs;) theres been many cases were US soldiers shot japanese soldiers after surrendering. but emm yea i do get your point. take note i speak ONLY on part of the IJN, the IJA was compleatly another story, yes the IJA was MUCH worse than others (USSR possible exeption). but ermm yea i defend the Japanese navy:lol:

i must yeild to your point because the ijn navy was nothing like the army so perhaps i am being a little too critical of their navy. i think the navy had a better reputation and thereby probably much better treatment of the enemy.

Just dug this up from the sub sim archives
I have a special interest in WWII subs, as my father (a merchant sailor) was torpedoed twice by Japanese submarines during the war. Both times the submarine surfaced after the attack and gave the crew food, medicine and warm clothes while they were in the lifeboats. Honorable people, the Japanese. Had they not done that I would probably not have been here today...

Had they not done that I would probably not have been here today...

Now that's a cool story.
Just goes to show the Japanese understood we are all humans, and all deserve the humane treatment.

great, i dont have a computer to run the game on (long story involving a hurricane) so i really dont know what you will find out about it. back when i still had my computer working, i tried it only once in a single mission and it did not show up on the sub as standard equipt, but it may be that it only works if added as an upgrade item i just dont know. so i have no basis to give you any background on it or what to expect.
my intention for it was to have the 50cal as the standard equipt on s-boats not as an upgrade item so thats what i was hoping to get out of it.
i dont know if im wrong about that being the standard equipt for s-boats in reality but i am just assuming thats what they should have?

nope, been busy with the snorkel, then the Ko-Hyoteki etc.. I will sometimes though, but I'm working on my IJN stuff for now.
We'll need two machine guns for the Sen Taka (I-200) eventually ;) and someone to animate them when diving by lowering them in the hull as in RL !

That was absolutely atypical if it was indeed true. Merchant ship sinkings were not at all common with IJN subs, and two during the war seems, well, highly unlikely. Also, the poster (based on his name) might have had a dad from a country other than a combatant with Japan. There were 19 merchant ships sunk off the coast of Africa, and a couple dozen attacked off Australia as well over the course of the war.
There are in fact stories of subs ramming lifeboats, shooting them, etc., from the Indian Ocean.
The Pacific War was no picnic.
(This is Compatible with The Increased & Improved ammo mods)

this was an old mod for the v1.1 and v1.2 of the game so the mod was probably not updated to work with the newer version game but as i demonstrated, with just a little effort you can take any old outdated or non-working mod or just the mod idea and remake it yourself. not all are explained as well as this one but with some trial and error most are fairly easy to figure out.
just follow the simple steps i just laid out for you and "remake" the mod, its good to learn this stuff if you want to make mods.
you can also download the one i did for you here: http://files.filefront.com/Browning+50+Modzip/;11614166;/fileinfo.html
when i went to try the mod out i found it wasnt working for me with v1.5, not sure why but i will look into it. maybe thats why the mod was never updated.
Excuse me,capitan. I got a stupid question.
Would you mind telling me how can i download the ".sim" editor for edit SH3/4 file?:D

If that story is true it is indeed an anamoly. the Japanese were infamous for their barbaric and inhumane treatment of POW's. They're still quite known for xenophobia as well.

well i guess it wont get done any time soon then, maybe in a few months i will have time to have a proper look at it.
i was hoping it was just a simple editing error causing it not to work but i think it requires more than that.

I have very little idea what I'm talking about but, do you think it might have something to do with the "weapons" upc file in Data\UPCdata\UPCunitsdata? The mod as it is makes no changes to this file.

not sure what the deal is really, it might be the newer versions of the game are different and the fix he used is not the way it works now. i havent had time to figure it out and i took down the mod i created because it didnt work.
maybe someone who has the time to look into it will solve this thing.

You don't need a mod for the "Single .50 cal Machine Gun" (12mm_Browning_soclu) is already there it just needs to be enabled and a few changes listed below because a setting is incorrect. Unless you are talking about a different gun.
http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/3752/50cal.jpg
You will need to make four changes to the gun in library/ussubparts/Deckgun12mmBrowning.
1. In the .dat file select the "Dmy_12mm_Browning_Cam" node and set the Y value to .014 so you can use the notch sight.
2. Also in the same location set the Z value to -0.075 so the back of the gun is not clipped by the camera view.
3. In the .sim file select node 7.wpn_cannnon. Go to the "Elevation" and select
"anm_barrel=12mm_Browning_soclu" and change it to "anm_barrel=<12mm_Browning_Body>" otherwise the gun will not elevate.
4. In the ammo storage set the shell, it is only set to use AP, so if you want AA you need to add some.
#3 above is really the only one that MUST be changed for the gun to work. Without it the gun will go left and right but will not elevate.
One more suggestion: It was commented in a post above to change the UpgradePacks.upc
UpgradePackSlotType=USMGAA <changed to USLightAA <this is the line inside the file that you need to change and what you need to change it to
The problem with doing this is if the UpgradePacks.upc already has changes from a previous MOD it will mess it up. The better way to do it is on the sub itself, actually in most cases on the tower or Unitparts section. At the Flakgun entries for "AcceptedTypes=USLightAA, USHeavyAA" add USMGAA, so it is "[U]AcceptedTypes=USLightAA, USHeavyAA, USMGAA". It will now accept the gun without affecting the Upgradepacks.upc.
Correction made and files set to a mod for the gun and posted here on Subsim, please read the ReadMeInfo.rtf:

hip hip hooray Peabody !
great work, I couldn't have done it myself anyhow.
so now we can implement it in the Narwhal early war can't we ?
I might make a .30 Browning machine gun, as those were on ships at the start of the war and not the .50
when you think about it the 13.2 mm japanese machine gun for the early war period doesn't sound so bad now does it ? I mean compared to the .30

I just cloned the .50 files to make the .30 Browning machine gun,
could you help me with the files needed to implement it in game Peabody ?
having a .50 instead of a .30 simply doesn't cut it...
