I cant simply get enough of this! Makes the game feel soooo much cooler! You should add more loading screens with sub info! Where did you get some of the video clips from. I'm looking to make a film too, been dying to screw around with Movie editors and stuff. Cool stuff!

04-05-07, 11:31 PM
You guys are TO KIND! Thanks for all the kudos.

Regarding the film...it was a small clip i found in a documentary about subs. There is not much stuff about the PTO Sub war in film format out there. I have orderd ONE! good DVD though, its not here yet as its being shipped from the U.S.
Its called "Submarines: The Silent Service in World War II", the cool thing about this DVD is that it has a lot of clips in color.
http://www.amazon.com/Submarines-Silent-Service-World-War/dp/B000AB0Z2W

I think the clip I used might actually be coming from this documentary.

As for the load screens, there are 15 in the stock game and I did 15 so I guess to have more one would have to fiddle with a script somewhere, did not look yet...

DeePsix501
04-05-07, 11:41 PM
Cool stuff! Are those the same documentary clips included on the bonus disk with SH4? Really cool stuff. It's one thing to see art of submarines, its another thing to see the REAL submarines. Good stuff! I was fiddling with the menu pictures that scroll by too, putting in the skippers of lost submarines and such. This game is great, and this mod makes it feel even greater

Very, very, very impressed, a wonderful piece of work. I did like the stock intro with the John Milton poem but the real WW2 footage on your mod and your new static screens just bring it alive.

I'm looking forward to more of your work in the future.

...well I just fixed the load screens in to the game as they where squeezed.
Again some graphic hard core PS work, copy, crop, tune, paste, move...up...down, naaaa, up again :p

Its the same "Boats" but they are not squeezed as I said, and I like stuff to be spot on.

So ready for upload "Silent Service Graphic Mod 1.1"

hi im new at installing jonesofts jsgme but it says that the graphics mod is installed on the activated mod list and when i start the game there is nothing there i downloaded it and put the mod in the mods section can someone help me please this is confusing i mean the loading screens and all that are the same the game works just not the mod itself

lt cmdr lare

CaptainCox
04-06-07, 04:59 PM
Please check if the next folder down in the mod is called "Data" if its not but another folder with the same name as the mod, then you have to take it out and drag the folder back that has "Data" as second folder down. Then it should work. This happens when you unrar the file. It creates a "Main" folder with the same name as the mod, but the actual JSGME ready mod is the one "inside" that main folder.

Lt commander lare
04-06-07, 05:03 PM
hi the main folder says silent service graphics mod
then if you click on that then comes data click on data and then comes
loading menu and movies

Welks! You know what would be cool... a mod that posts:
Boat name, Patrol #, Date (maybe time), Lat - Long, geo reference and a short note into the Ship's Log when taking a ctrl+F11 screen shot. Or at best a caption box one could type in. Would make reading those Patrol Log memorable moments, alot more fun and immersive.

Example:

USS Thresher SS-200
War Patrol 1,
19 December 1941,
02:30 hours,
Lat 26° 11' 45N Long 127° 38' 45E,
-Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands.

Every time I turn on the game, I am greated by this wonderful mod. The intro movie shows real people and footage of our subs in action. It is far more moving that the stock intro, which was already moving in its own stance. Shall I call the dev team and get CaptainCox hired? :yep:

May I offer some constructive critisism? The intro movie shows lots of great footage as the text and badge fade onto screen in the middle. At the very end the movies in the background seem to disappear suddenly to a black screen. While this is very minor, maybe it would have been better continuing the film and gradualy fading out to black? Again, this is very minor, and the intro movie is far superior to stock and past intros. Just some food for thought!

Keep doing what you're doing CaptainCox, you're producing masterpeices! :|\\

Have you seen my SH3 intro ;) it does just that...
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=108006&highlight=Erich+intro
I think you are right about the SS intro but...it does disappear to suddenly.
I might fix that in a future release 1.2 ;) with new stuff of course...

Just tried this out - most of it looks very cool. For some reason, however, my logo.wmv file got corrupted somewhere during this install and locked up my machine - I had to search for and find a backup copy of the original logo.wmv and replace it before it would work again. Also, even after doing that I can't play the intro movie in game, even though it will play in Windows Media Player outside the game just fine. I had a similar problem with the game's original movie, though not with the movie from Silent Service 1.1 for some reason. Go figure :nope:

Only real nit pick I would have about this version is that the white text is too hard to read against some of the pictures on some of the loading/menu screens, at least on my machine. But overall, another great effort - keep up the good work

Well Dear Friend......as my Grandmother used to say..."Are Soles Flat Fish!"....Have downloaded and endeavoured to install three times now....but I too am "crashing out".

CaptainCox
05-02-07, 03:28 AM
OK, think there is obviously some compatibly issues. I save that intro in HD...maybe that has something to do with it. Will look at it when home. Thanks for the heads up guys. As to the withe text in the load screens...well I had to sort a compromise in order to make the layout look different and fresh on each one of them , and in some the artistic license maybe took over the practical in this case.

l3th4l
05-02-07, 06:09 AM
Recompressing the intro with the standard ATI AVIVO converter enabled me to watch the intro with my media player at least; it also appears to have resized it to something smaller, nothing i have any control over though. Unfortunately the game still crashes upon trying to play the intro. No biggie though as i've seen it and can disable it ;)

i'd try resizing the intro to 1024x512 which was the resolution of the original one... maybe that's the problem. I don't have a program installed that does this or i would test it out myself.

Other than that great work on the mod

a small update:

I have just installed premiere and resized and cropped the clip to 1024x512, reencoded and saved as wmv and now it runs fine ingame. unfortunately i must have have messed up some setting along the way resulting in extremly poor quality with a lot of compression artifacts etc.; otherwise i would have uploaded the file somewhere for you.

Thanks for the update :) :arrgh!:

My thought about 1.2 vs 1.2b

1) The intro movie in 1.2 looks way more professional and better (thanks to the higher bitrate (10.4mb/s @ 1920 x 1080 looks WAY better than 0.8Mb/s @ 1024 x 512). Intro from v1.2 looks good even at my 22" =)
2) The text at each scene in the intro movie in 1.2b is way too long (or it changes too fast), people wont be able to read most of it... People have to enjoy it, not to get stress over it

Suggestion:
Revert back to 1.2 (or at least provide both versions in the same archive). Just my 2 cents...

*Back to 1.2*

PS: Are you sure that the problem is in the video codec? I think it's because of the audio compression (but I might be wrong) as the 1.2 uses Windows Media Audio 9 Professional VBR and 1.2b uses WMA v2 CBR...

Cheers man! You seem pretty at home with vid stuff ;)

I guess i could do that...its very late here in Deutschland was just off for some zz.
I will upload the "1.2" intro in the morn recompiled.

Thing is...you get so in the "process" when you do this stuff, 25 odd layers, 50 pics, sounds files and what have you on the DT, converters here and Bink Smacker there...I guess I could also revise the length of those text blocks.

My primary objective for the 1.2b was mainly to get it working and try out some new stuff.

I guess there will be a 1.3 or 2.0 maybe..but not right away as it takes a lot of time. Wanted to get back to hex editing...especially the sea plants and rocks are very high on my list.

Thanks for the heads up but.

My pleasure :)

And yeh, vid projects do take lots of time :) But the result is enjoyed by many! And thanks for this nice dedication!

Hex editining is done by many right now, the creative part isn't... ;)

Good luck!

HO-LY sh%t! Now THAT'S an intro! Not some pretentious British voice actor reading poetry over some crummy sped up ingame footage...that made me think of being in English class. This, my friend, gets me pumped up to sink some tonnage as part of the Silent Service!

Excellent work! :rock::up:

OK this is the last update for that darn Intro Movie.
1.2c.

Better bit rate etc, and also some graphic tweaks and timing for the texts etc.
I think it looks more like a proper intro film now.

A lot of work for something you normally just click away :p, but I enjoyed every moment doing this as I like fiddling with graphic software.

The 1.2 Intro, will get uploaded...eventually, got some stuff to do here. But will be done today or in the morning.

Updated the 1st post with the Final 1.2c and a Standalone "INTRO MOVIE" movie ONLY! (replace the "Intro.wmv" in the Mod Folder:
SILENT SERVICE 1.2 GRAPHICS MOD\Data\Movies\Intro)

Captain,

I love this mod, you did a great job sir!

Is there any way I can easily change the background music for the intro?
I would like to use "The Song of the High Seas" from my Victory at Sea album.
I have ripped all the music from my CD and have it in .WAV files.
I believe it would compliment all your excellent graphic work.

Good Luck and Good Hunting

MaxT.dk

Can't do it man as he would have to make a new intro specially for you...

What YOU could do is to open the intro file, split it into video and audio stream, then merge the video with your new audio and make sure the output have the same settings/encoding as the default. BAM! there you go :P

CaptainCox
05-14-07, 10:42 PM
That is 100% correct. Would require some 1-2 h of rendering and remastering.

he left subsim and is no longer around to respond to posts but his mods are all first class and very usefull. even though his mods are old and some no longer work, most of them still do for v1.4 and even v1.5 so you might want to look over his other mods too.

hello, I make at this time of loading new images based on the Japanese ships, but I have a concern for quality display. the proportions used by the basic games are 1024 by 512 screens to read loads and I did not find the file and change lines to increase the reading resolution.
even by changing the display options in the Game (1960 par1050) for me (I have a 20-inch) or manufacturing screens of higher resolutions, it does not change anything. the games continued to read his images in 1024 by 512 and a screen of 20 or 22 inches, the final details of the image are flouts.
If someone has a solution I propose, it is welcome. Thank you for your help

I have it and will upload tonight. It still works well with SH4UBM and I use it in my unmodded game installation. I've also used it with TMO, RFB and GFO without any problems. Just load this mod after the supermod. I use in in conjunction with Dowly's Pearl Harbor Menu mod which I will also upload.

the problem you were having is because subsim uploads are limited to a max size of only 39mb, anything bigger than that and you have to upload it somewhere elese and send the link to "Laufen zum Ziel" and he will upload it to subsim for you using some special program or something.

it would be better if neal had some kind of a pop up warning explaining why the upload didnt work.

He is one guy I really miss. He just had an indomitable attitude of cheerfulness and determination. He had demands put on him from all directions and never lost his cool. Other than you, RDP he had the most consistently positive attitude I've seen around here.

His last post he was looking into a problem somebody called to his attention in a file and he just never appeared again. A very strange disappearance, as it appeared that he was hot on the trail of another mod from the last words here.

Darn! Subsim not working right tonight. I was going to quote his last post. No matter, you can look it up for yourself... most strange and I wish he were still here.

I wasn't here for a very long time because i left for another historic game: Empire Total Wars. Sporadically i visit this forum and today i came to this thread.

Maybe its just mere chance but in the modding scene of ETW there is a Captain Cox activ and i came to the idea that this guy is the same person as here because the ETW Captain Cox does the same thing as the SH4 Captain Cox: Changing annoying "Vanilla" Loading Screens into really cool stuff.
