View Full Version : REQ - Escort depth charging (immersion)

I was reading "Iron Coffins" and came up with a great idea for an immersion mod, though I dont know how difficult it would be to pull off. In the book there are many times where they are attacking a convoy, or are about to attack, and they hear the escorts depth charging in the distance another u-boat. I thought it would be really cool to have a mod that makes escorts attack other u-boats from time to time. Of course having AI U-boats would be difficult, but maybe just having the escorts occasionally depth charge a certain spot where there isnt actually a u-boat (though in our imagination there would be) would be a great immersion mod. It would also make the strategy of convoy attacks different if they are already depth charging someone else, not to mention it would be pretty realistic. :up:

this I think might be doable with the twist of
putting U.S. Sclass submerged model into
german sub roster and scripting it into
campaign all over the place but the
last step is a fair amount of work.
Maybe you could clone off serges
AI uboats wolfpack stuff and just
make a second type of pack that
although it doesnt fire torps shows
up to add the effect of distant subs
getting wacked complete with breaking up noises

its actually not a bad concept I hope someone
runs with it.

Wow that would be great, sounds feasible and it would definitly do the job! Thanks for responding with the idea! I hope one of the modders decides to give it a try, I think it would be a great mod if done correctly. I wish I could do it myself, but I wouldnt know where to begin....

Tutorials same as the rest of us, thats how it happens you know.
you just get an idea one day and no one is working on it but you
see a need for it and this provides the motivation to learn how.

moddings a means to an end after all not an end in and of itself.

Well I'll tell you what, this weekend when I have some time I'll look into what would be involved in getting my idea off the ground. I'd love to be good at making mods, I think I would come up with some sweet ones. And I'm good with computers too, I've just never done anything like making a mod so its a really foreign concept to me. I'll see what I can do though :up:

There was a similar request a while ago in the GWX Den

To that end I added deep submerged AI Ge subs in rnd patrols in 1.02

May revisit that and add some more at a shallower depth

Peridepthwould do wouldnt it?

Also it might suffice to just script them as additional units on the
existing wolfpacks ?
