My hopes and dreams of having a new subsim that would work properly were dashed in one fail swoop this morning. Since I have had SH4 I have had constant issues with not CTD's but entire system freezes. I will play the game for approx 5-10 min and the sounds will studder and then the entire system will freeze. The only way out of it is a system reset.

So began my 3 day quest to try and get what promises to be a beautiful sim up and running. Let me start by describing my system. I have a Dual Core 6600 Processor, BFG 8800 GTS vid card and 2048MB Dual Channel RAM. I have tried various driver and BIOS changes and even OS changes to make this game work. Even tried running the game at horrible settings as others have suggested. So, as a last resort I tried calling tech support at Ubisoft. I thought for sure that a company as big and generally well regarded would get me on my way. Well, I was certainly in for a surprise.

After the not so friendly tech support person answered the phone and I rambled a few things from DXDIAG off to him , he informed me, without any further troubleshooting, that my problems were because I am using an Nvidia 8800 GTS which is not a supported video card. He told me that in order to make the game function properly I would need to downgrade to a lesser, supported video card. When I asked why the latest and greatest series of video cards was not supported as it would be with any other developer he stated he did not know. Then here comes the real kicker. When I asked if the video card would be supported in future patches he stated that they have no intention of supporting the 8800 series of cards. And finally, when I asked what my next step should be, his suggestion was to return the game to the store and make sure that in the future I read the system requirements. I can fully understand that new games may not be able to support older video cards, but to ignore new cards is completely unacceptable.

I guess what i am getting at is never before have I ever been so disappointed with a game company. This product is a shamble at best and the combined effect of poor product support and poor product prep has put a very poor taste in my mouth . I hope that one day Ubi and others will realize the error in their ways. If anyone has another idea to try, please feel free because until then this sim will be collecting dust on my shelf, much to my dismay.

OKay, let me state here and now that I am running SH4 on an BFG NVidia 8800 GTS with no problem whatsoever. My PC is a dual core 6600 with NVidia chipset. I'm running it in 1600 * whatever and i've not experienced any crashes. That said, I have so far only ran all the submarine school training missions and a couple of the supplied missions (battle of midway etc).

I personaly think the guy on the phone hasn't a bloody clue what he is talking about.....but then he works for a facelesss corp so there's no real suprise there.

I would suggest ensuring you have the latest NVidia drivers (Oct or Nov 2006 I think) and keep trying.

Athlon 64 3500+ processor, 2 gigs of memory and I'm running an eVGA nVidia 8800 GTS. It runs like a dream. I'm sorry to hear you're having problems, and for the moron on the phone. I'll echo the "make sure you have the latest drivers" sentiment.

I am definately using the newest drivers. I am using the 9792 Drivers dated 12/21/2006. That was the first thing I checked.... :(

I find you sentence on sound studdering interesting. Perhaps a soundcard issue? Driver? Acceleration?

I am running a 8800 GTX on Vista, all settings maxed, with no CTD's. I do however think there is a memory issue. I have 2 GB of ram, and get occasional stutters and had one CTD.

I save my missions about once every 30 minutes or so. It seems that much longer than that, it runs out of memory and slows down.

SH3 runs like a charm with the 8800 series.

He's got a point...what soundcard are you using ? I'm using XiFi with no problems. What OS are you using...Vista or XP Pro/Home ? (i'm using XP Pro).

Did you install the DX drivers (9.03c I think) that came on the disk as part of the install ? (I did).

Are you letting windows handle your memory?

Exactly..!!..High end sound cards can be a drain on the system at times. Cut the sound requirements back so card doesn't have to work as hard and check the drivers.

I have an Audigy card only because it came with the system at purchase. However, since I use head phones I don't need the intense settings as with speakers.

Ill bet dollars to doughnuts its an onboard soundcard with obsolete drivers.

Good luck on finding vista certified drivers for that ;)

Just because a particular video card is "not on the list" doesent mean it wont work.

Other things to look into is what processes are you running ? Have you tried running with your virus protection and or a software firewall disabled as a troubleshooting measure ?

This will er should get moved over to the troubleshooting / tech section.

I am also running a non-supported card (Radeon X1900XTX) and for the most part it runs beautifully. I did have some issues last evening with some CTDs.

What I discovered was that these CTDs were more than likely caused by sound issues. At the time I was running TeamSpeak and involved with some pretty heavy chatting, whle at the same time running at 1000+ Time Compression. The sound stuttered, the game locked up, and the game crashed.

I experimented even further by running the "CBS Radio Mod" whilst in heavy TC. It took a bit longer, but eventually the sound stuttered and another CTD ensued.

I was able to replicate these things with some success. To prove this out I rebooted, closed out TeamSpeak, turned off the radio and ran some heavy TC. No more CTDs.

So in summary, I believe that, at least in my case, all of my CTDs are sound related. I run a SB Audigy Gamer w/ the latest drivers. I suggest that you focus on the sound.

I hope this helps :yep:

Could it be the power supply is too small?

I would look at soundcard issue at this point.

I agree with the others suspecting the sound card. Simple thing to do is disable the sound completely within game and see if that allows you to play without any issues. If so you've found your culprit. I also run a 8800 GTS with no issues (other than the "A" key CTD) at the moment. Good luck! S!

Yes, windows handles the memory for me. Food for thought, the 8800 GTX video card has 768 MB of memory. Audio cards use system memory, could be the culprit.

Tough luck. Sounds like you got an idiot tech support guy. I have two 8800 Nvidia and I'm running the latest Nforce drivers as well. I am using them in SLI mode with all settings maxed.

When I got screen freezes in SH3 it was do to a fractured HD and and a bunch of DLL stray in my registory and I removed all theh mods, ran defrag, ran chkdsk /f, and then my registery cleaner. I then installed the MODS again to SH3 and never had a freeze again.

As for SH4 I get CTD but that is due to TC and lagg causing memory errors that I hope they fix in a patch coming soon. So when I get close to land, I turn TC off or run it no higher than 512 and I have not had any issues since.

Thanks for all the replies. Seems to be a hot topic. Anyhow the sound I am using is the onboard Realtek AC97 sound on my Asus P5N32-SLI Se Deluxe. I had originally suspected sound as well and tried various drivers. The ones that came with the Mobo, new ones from Asus, as well as Realtek. Also, My OS is Windows XP Media Center 2005 fully updated and patched to SP2. I will include the report from DXDIAG and see if someone can see something there that may be causing my problems. Thanks All.

My system is running with EVGA Nvidia 8800GTX running in SLI although I don't think SLI mode has any effect on SH4.

I have had no problems with the game as you have described.

I am running an external sound box. The discontinued Creative Audigy 2 NX as all of my native motherboard slots are taken up with the 2 graphics cards and the Aegia PhsX device.
If you are using Motherboard Sound, I suggest you either get a good sound card or a USB external box such as the Creative Live USB box.

Also, see if you can monitor the temp in the case... or even the video card.

I'm running a ATI 1950 pro and it will go from 38 deg C on my desktop to around 60 when running SH4.

Are you letting windows handle your memory?

Yes, windows handles the memory for me. Food for thought, the 8800 GTX video card has 768 MB of memory. Audio cards use system memory, could be the culprit.

I don't think thats the issue, but you can try it out. Sound cards, by the contrary, take workload from the cpu, not the other way around. Instead of the CPU processing sound, you have the sound chip making the work. The only thing I can see is memory usage by the sound card, and even that I doubt pretty much if you have 2 gigs.

As for the 8800 series, I have also to disagree. I have a Inno3D 8800 GTS 320MB and the game runs like an angel. No matter how much action, ships, explosions, etc, the frame rate never drops to a level that provoques stutering.

Thanks for all the replies. Seems to be a hot topic. Anyhow the sound I am using is the onboard Realtek AC97 sound

Not to be mean or anything but that sound board is absolute crap.

Id bet youd be better off by going out and buying a in expensive sound card.... anything is better than the AC97. Theyve been around for at least 5 years that I know of.

Its also quite posible that windows guessed the wrong drivers and it actually is not an AC97. Check the manual for your mobo.

Windows does that all the time with NIC cards. So often in fact I manually install drivers for them now.

I'm running a e6600 with 2 gig of ram on the 975 chipset mothboard with a EVGA 8800GTS with zero problems. I do get a 30 second hang on open radio messages but that is a known bug during a long patrol.

My bet would be that it's your onboard sound. An easy way to test this is to disable it in the BIOS then try playing the game for an extended period without sound. If it doesn't crash, then you know the problem.

AC97 is actually a codec, not a sound chipset. It's just the standard that all onboard sound chips used until 2004. Intel High Definition Audio is apparently its successor, but I know absolutely nothing about it.

Built-in AC97 chipsets range from pretty good (the nForce Audio chipset is a great one) to very, very bad. The worst seem to be the ubiquitous Realtek chipsets, as they like to randomly change the pitch of whatever they're supposed to be playing. Even the good chipsets use system memory for sound, so a standalone sound card is always a good investment.

I still hold a grudge with Creative for suing Aureal into oblivion (Aureal won, but went bankrupt from the legal fees), but they're the only real choice nowadays.

Of course, Turtle Beach is still around. All of their cards sound better than anything Creative's ever made, but the driver support is horrendous.

Could it be the power supply is too small?

I think you hit the nail right on the head with that statement. I think he may have a power supply problem. I just recently rebuilt my system, running exactly what he's running with the exception of the sound card (not sure what he has). Well I was having the same problem not only with SH4 but various outher products. I found out through CompUSA that the power supply may have been going out or wasn't sufficient for the system. I got a 650 Wat power supply and since then I haven't had a single CTD on any program (which is good seeing I'm running Vista) . I also noticed the date of the driver he's using for NVidia, if I am not mistaken they have a driver that was released in February or March, he may want to check on that, especialy if he's running Vista.

So far, the only difference between your machine and pretty much everbody else who has replied is that you are running Media Center.

Now I know MC is the "same" as XP, but it isn't. It uses it's media handling capabilities in a slightly different way to XP, and it is always allocating resources to the actual "Media Center" bit of XP. This encompasses a lot of the inside of your PC, as it utilises the vid card, sound card, ethernet card (which is always a bad system bandwidth hog) Kind of a prefetch on certain DLL's etc.

I would go along with everything that ppl have said about sound cards, but I would also clear my Event Viewer logs, reboot and try and run the game again, then post any obvious errors (Red X's in eventvwr) here and we'll see what might be actually causing it. There is usually a pretty good audit trail for CTD's and BSOD's in the eventvwr logs, and any dmp crashdumps you might have had.

BTW, I'm running it on Vista Ultimate with an 8800GTS..Apart from the bloody jaggies, it runs schweet

What I have noticed, and I'm not sure if this is a Vista thing, as I'm not letting any of my XP machines have my 8800 :smug: , is that on the video card properties, it shows that in addition to the 640Mb it has, the card is using 766Mb of system RAM, and my total system RAM is showing as only 3326 of 4Gb. I'm not sure, as I say, if this happens in XP/MC, so it's worth checking that, too, although even with .5Gb of your RAM taken by the GTS, the game should still run fine...

A couple of things your page file is way to high..try turning of a few background programs....If your not bothered at all about internet connections then try this...Clean boot from Microsoft....Once you use it in auto(Let it show you how) you can then do it yourself, and if you have 24/7 Broadband and are paranoid you can then enable it

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Next ...sorry to say but your onboard sound....Even though its an Asus card...Just aint going to cut it....Do your self a favour get a dedicated sound card...If you can afford it this is a very good card not as decked out as it's big brother with the front header, but it has 64 meg of RAm dedicated to sound.

Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty Professional 7.1 Soundcard

I'm running with a 8800GTX with no problems...

another thing....Download Memtest from here
http://www.memtest.org/

Make a boot cd...

And run Memtest over night to stress your memory...This will definately tell you within the first hour if you have faulty memory modules. Still run though over night sometimes failurs do not occur until something like the 20th pass!!!

Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1 Soundcard. Not cheap and from what I'm hearing beats the crap out of creative, not a clunky front heavy thing that creaive is....I actually have a fatality Pro but choose NOT to install all that crap that comes with it...Just the console and drivers!!

~Here's another up and coming sound card from a well know established house

Razer Barracuda AC-1 Gaming 7.1 Soundcard, again aint cheap but it looks the BIZ!!!

I have yet to have a sound stutter playing any games that I own at the moment so I think I'll stick with what I have got....But there agin DX10 just around the corner!!!

Out of the two above the Auzentech is a very professional piece of hardware.

Not wanting to split hairs, but if you read his post above the DXDIAG he says he is using XP MCE 2005, which is NOT XP Professional SP2; I don't care what DXDIAG says. So either he doesn't know what OS he is using (extremely unlikely) or DXDIAG is not interrogating his OS correctly. I don't run MCE, nor do any of my customers, so I've never had cause to DXDIAG it..

I use an Asus P5B-E using the onboard sound (Intel HD) and an eVGA 8800GTS. No issue with sound what-so-ever.

XP MCE, just like Vista Home Premium or Ultimate, does not run MCE unless you invoke it. So there is nothing "extra" happening on an MCE install unless you run MCE. With a few capabilities removed, XP MCE is identical to XP Pro.

As for his page file, there is nothing wrong with it. No need to change it from System Managed (which his appears to be). The only effect a "large" page file has is reduced drive space unless you're actually utilizing it to a greater degree, then you'll have a performance loss (just as you would even with a smaller page file).

Just wanted to update everyone on this situation. I have recontacted Ubi and told them that the original answer was unacceptable and was able to get to the point where I send them the DXDIAG and MSINFO files for evaluation. Also, I have since updated drivers for the onboard NVIDIA NFORCE 4 sound. First I tried the new drivers from Realtek and then the newest from Nvidia themselves. All to no avail. Still waiting to hear back from Ubi though. So in the mean time I decided to blow the dust off of SH3 and play that to satisfy my desires to send some tankers to the ocean floor and guess what. After intalling, and patching, and trying to get reaquainted with SH3, same thing. Well, almost. NOw the sound studders and system freezes with the sound repeating. I have various other games including STALKER, BF2, Flight Simulator 2004 and X, and HL2. None of these other games exhibit these problems.

So, I guess I will sit here and wait as I scratch my head as I try and figure out why SH3 and SH4 are the only ones my system does not like. The system I have now is not the one that I played SH3 on originally. That one is sitting in the closet gathering dust. Thinking about setting it back up. :) Anyhow, once again, if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks.

RE: Xfire. Tools -> Options -> Games. Select game, 'disable Xfire in game'. Problems solved! It still tracks your status (shows you in-game when you are), still tracks time played, etc - it just doesn't tie into the game .exe anymore, and resolves the crashing issue.

RE: The rest of the thread. Realtek AC'97 definitely IS a problem. I used Realtek HD Audio (ALC882) for a while, and their HD stuff isn't bad. It's not great - it's certainly no competition to an X-Fi, but it's not bad. The AC'97 is total ****, though, no question. Unstable, buggy, system resource intensive, and doesn't even perform basic EAX functions properly.

RE: Creative's competition. Sorry, but no. I hate monopolies as much as the next guy, but EAX is the de facto standard in audio. No audio manufacturer, PERIOD, aside from Creative has EAX support past EAX 2 (EAX is now up to version 5). And for everyone who even offers EAX 2, it's all emulated in software. There are absolutely no hardware-accelerated EAX offerings in the market except Creative cards (and, to be fair, not even all of them. For example, the "X-Fi Xtreme Audio" only offers up to EAX 3, and all that in software. The "Audigy 2 Value" and "Live! 24bit" the exact same.) For pure audio listening - yes, there are absolutely better offerings out there, with no question at all. I had an ESI Juli@ once, and that was an AWESOME card for lossless audio playback. But for gaming? Creative is the ONLY shop in town.

Ok, time for another update. I opened the Event Viewer and found that under the system tab I am getting lots of warnings. They say "An error was dedected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation". I noticed that I get anywhere from 5 to 30 of these and the seem to happen in the few minuites prior to the system freezing. Oh yeah, it is also freezing on all games now. And I set up MEMTEST to run all day while I was at work and came home to find it frozen again. I am suspecting that my HD it failing but my HD is Drive C: And I think the message is saying that I have a problem with Drive D: which used to be my external drive but it changed itself to Drive F: Anyone have any new ideas? Thanks.

\Device\HardDisk0 is the disk connected to (usually) the Primary IDE chain in the Master position, or SCSI ID 0, or the SATA #1 connector.

But yes, that would indicate a possibly failing drive.

Sounds like you found the problem. Another program that is very good to rule out CPU/memory heat problems due to overclocking is Prime95. It is a free, processor intensive program used for finding prime numbers:

http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm

Run it and select "stress test" in one of the menu's and let it go overnight. I don't own a dual processor (yet) but run it on both processors also. If you get any errors after running it overnight then you may have heat issues with your CPU, especially if you overclock.

I run a Coolermaster case with 7 - 120mm fans. Cooling is the least of my worries.

Well, after a HD change, no luck. Any other ideas?

Ok, someone I was talking to about this problem said that this may be caused by my video card. Anyone else care to chime in on this theory?

Have you tried running the game with sound disabled? Disabled at the driver level I mean. Remove your sound drivers and disable the onboard sound in your bios then run the game. See if it still crashes. I have the same mobo in one of my older PC's. The onboard sound was crap. If you don't get any crashes with no sound, then go buy a soundcard.

Ok, I think I may have this figured out. I noticed that when I updated the BIOS that my memory voltages were a little off. They were set on Auto instead of the required 2.3V. This seems to have settled things down. Anyone else think that this could be the solution? I hope it is because I cant take much more of this. :)

Realtek has new drivers and sometimes installing the drivers from the microsoft update centre works better on some things . Take it to a computer technician if all else fails .

I also have this sound issue. After a while this sound studders starting, some soundfunctions can stop to work, once the torpedos did´nt load, and it looks like some functions starting to get wierd. I have noticed it occurs when using high TC. If I then save the game and reload game the sound issue is gone, and then come back after a while.:o

Im running on a 8800 GTX, P4 3.4 GHz, 2Gb Ram, XP pro SP2, Creative Audigy 2Z, all with the latest drivers and updates.
Could it be the sound card? Never have had any problems like this before with any other game.
Glad for some help here.
