The file 'Basic' file in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Cfg is a legacy file from SH3 and has no effect on SH4.

But in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\Data\UPCData\UPCCampaignData I see 'CareerStart' and 'CareerTrack'.

Anyone know how or where to edit so that one can complete more then 3 or 4 missions without forced retirement?

Looking into it now :ping: , thought I saw a few lines of code dealing with retirement...

Edit: Find your career save file in your documents folder (...My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames\(YOUR SAVE FOLDER). When you open the Careertracker files in each folder, under the CareerStatusLast section the date should match the date last shown on the calender in your "lobby" room. Once you verify that you have the correct Career Tracker file, try changing some code:

Look at an example from one of my save files:

Player current rating seems to get higher after each patrol. Try reducing the number next to Playerrating to 1 to see if you dont retire. I dont know if it will work since I havent had to retire in any of my careers yet, but it is worth a try...

The campaign should not end after 3 patrols - unless you're a very poor performer. You should actually increase your player rating to keep fighting.

Im sending 30,000 tons to the bottom each patrol, plus many aircraft and still getting retired. Only thing I can think of is I spend too much time at sea before returning.

Has anyone thought that maybe the "Patrol" is more like a tour of duty, since you can now return to base and essentially refit, rearm and rest your crew. I had not thought about this until last night, when I decided that I did not want to stop sinking ships , and thus went and refit and did not end patrol. I dont know how long I can stay at sea before something breaks, but it seems like you could sail forever as long as you dont wreck your boat.

i.e. "I could patrol for a year, and only return to port when I need more ammo, then after 12 months end patrol." I am going to try this anyway and see what happens.

3.4.4 Carrer length and Time between patrols
Silent Hunter 4 simulates the career of a captain according to real practices of the US Submarine Force of the period. Depending on your performance you can expect your career to last between 5 and 8 patrols. Of course, real silly results such as sinking your own capital ships will lead to a quick and timely termination of your command.

The time spent in base between patrols, it will generally be in the range of 2 or 3 weeks:
a. Returning home with a damaged submarine may lead to longer refit times (and time spent in base) due to repairs that need to be performed.
b. Occasionally your submarine may undergo a longer refit which will bring upgrades but take long to complete, thus lengthening the time spent in base.
e. If you are selected to command another submarine, training with the new crew will delay the next patrol by at least a few weeks.
Now thats in the manual ;)

Yes, I know, and I don't care for it. It's an average over the war including late war skippers, who only made a few patrols, and skippers relieved for failure. 5-8 is not very realistic for the simulation, and it's not much fun. A good early war skipper could easily make a dozen or more patrols in 2 or 3 boats (tours) over the course of the war. My Tigrone's skipper made 13 war patrols in 2 boats (Searaven & Tigrone) in 2 tours. Some good skippers made more.

I think a good model for the game is 18 patrols divided in 2 or 3 boats with 6 to 9 patrols in each, as a career model. If you live, that ought to take you through the war from first to last. Several skippers, who were at sea on patrol in the first months of the war were at sea on patrol when the war ended.
